Worldview Matters with Brannon Howse

Brannon's guest is Chris Puplava of financialsense.com and their topics include: 1). CNBC financial wizards tell us on August 5th that the commodities bull market is over and it is time to sell, sell, sell. Really? When did the government fix inflation, the banking crisis and our 53 trillion dollar debt? When did the government stop printing money like nuts to pay our nation's bill? 2). The feds have not been honest. Chris explains the hard data that reveals America has been in a recession since the last quarter of 2007. 3). The feds like to go back a quarter and re-do the numbers. In other words, when the news is bad, they cover it up and then when the quarter passes they print the real figures. 4). What will it take for Americans to realize the government is not the solution but the problem? 5). What can those with money do to get ready for hard times? 6). Why oil is going to go back up. 7). What can people do that are living pay check to pay check to get ready?

Laurie Beth Jones’ Four [Pagan] Elements of Success

By Bob DeWaay

Modern evangelicalism has a voracious appetite for self-discovery. Various approaches to discovering one’s temperament have played a prominent role in this. In the 70’s and 80’s the ancient Greek terminology of Choleric, Sanguine, Phlegmatic, and Melancholy, were used to describe temperaments in a series of popular Christian books. When I was in seminary, Gary Smalley was brought in to present his version of temperaments: Otter, Lion, Golden Retriever, and Beaver. Recently, Rick Warren introduced his S.H.A.P.E. program for self-discovery which uses the Myers Briggs indicator for the “P” part of the program. If these approaches are not enough to satisfy our urges for self-discovery, there are always D.E.S.A, DiSC, and even Charlie Brown characters.

Now, Laurie Beth Jones enters the market promoting yet another version of temperament study: Earth, Wind, Fire and Water. Using these ancient pagan categories, she has developed her Path Elements Profile (PEP) and sells the program to businesses. She claims, “Insights surrounding PEP have helped save marriages, unite families, discern career directions, and select everything from jobs to spouses.” (from her book The Four Elements of Success). Starting from the assumption that the pagan idea of the four elements (shared by ancient Chinese philosophy, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Astrology) can accurately describe one’s temperament, she promises, “Understanding and utilizing this personality profile tool will revolutionize your understanding of who you are and help you clarify why you do the things you do.” What is the outcome if this type of self-discovery? – “With your new knowledge of the four elements, you will also have keen insights into the needs and values of others and thus be more persuasive when it comes to getting your own needs met.”

Jones claims to have invented this system, not because the others were not valid, but that they were too hard to remember. She says, “Recognizing the importance of self-image, I decided to use the four elements of earth, water, wind, and fire to help people in their self-identity process.” It seems that there is an insatiable hunger for more self-identity that fuels the sales of ever multiplying temperament theories and indicators. This is not surprising in the world since the worldly minded, because of the sin nature, are obsessed with SELF. But didn’t Jesus tell His disciples to deny self?

Jones does provide a Biblical basis for her approach: “Jesus referred to Himself as ‘living water.’ In the Scriptures the Holy Spirit is described as being ‘wind’ or ‘fire.’ Adam literally means ‘made from clay.’” So there you have it, water, wind, fire and earth are all found in the Bible, used to describe God and man. Of course there is the problem of authorial intent. Actually Jesus offered to give “living water” and did not technically call Himself that. But laying that aside, this type of interpretation is nothing more than random association. Jones’ claim is that there are four personality types or temperaments, and that these can be accurately described by four “elements.” That Adam means “earth” because God gave him that name (because of where he came from) has no relationship to a modern personality theory. Likewise, that fire is used as a symbol of the Holy Spirit has no relationship to distinctive human personalities or temperaments. If we take her use of Scripture to be valid, then any theory whatsoever could be “proved” by merely finding a word in the Bible that matches a word that describes our own man-made theory.

But, to further gain credibility, she adduces other religions: Native American religion, Chinese feng shui, and Hinduism are cited as evidence that the four elements (by the way, these are not really “elements” other than in pagan superstition) are significant. Jones even cites ideas from the mystical Kabbalah: “The Kabbalah, a form of Jewish mysticism, reveals that the four symbols representing the Hebrew YHWH, or Yahweh, actually are a tetragrammaton that stands for the four elements of earth, water, air, and fire.” No the Kabbalah does not “reveal” the meaning of God’s name because it does not contain God’s revelation, it contains false religious ideas of men. Finally she cites occultist Carl Jung as the modern source of temperament theory (which he is).

Jones admits that some Christian friends told her that her ideas sounded New Age, and that others pointed out that these elements are related to astrological signs. She simply says that for the purpose of her book the elements have nothing to do with astrology. She offers this disclaimer: “I remain firmly rooted in my Christian faith and tradition, and I believe that the elements are fascinating reflections of the different characteristics of God, the Creator, yet have no separate divine power in and of themselves.”

The rest of the book consists of processes to discover one’s element (or more accurately combination of elements) and then gain tools to use these to become successful. It includes personal “meditations” for the benefit of readers who have now discovered their element. For example: “I am Earth. I give soil and substance to support those around me. I support and protect all living things. . . I am sure. I am steady. I am Firm.”          It is not shocking that the world loves this material. But clearly it is not Christian. Yet TBN recently (July 6th, 2006) interviewed Jones and told the audience about her other book Jesus CEO and how to get her books. There is nothing wrong with businesses doing studies on people’s differences and personalities if they think it will help their business. But why is the church importing this material, especially a version of it that has such pagan roots?

Her theory and others like it have no relationship to the gospel or sanctification. At the best they are a huge side-track for churches that adopt them because they engage people in studying self rather than denying self and serving Christ. At the worst they are pagan and opposed to the gospel. Since Jones herself admits the pagan roots of her system, it is not hard to discern that her process is not Biblical.

We do not need to discover self; we need to serve God and others by His grace. Peter wrote: “Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren, fervently love one another from the heart, for you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and abiding word of God” (1Peter 1:22). For those who have been born of God, obedience to the truth changes lives. God has revealed the means of grace whereby Christians grow in sanctification.

Pagan element theories have no power to conform us to the image of Christ. Paul said, “But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how is it that you turn back again to the weak and worthless elemental things, to which you desire to be enslaved all over again?” (Galatians 4:9)  Paul gives further reason to not waste our time studying “self” in hopes of achieving success: “He died for all, that they who live should no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf. Therefore from now on we recognize no man according to the flesh” (2Corinthians 5:15, 16a). Jones’ elements theory is not compatible with serving the resurrected Christ in newness of life.

Excellent assesment! As one former New Ager who practiced astrology and Christ deleivered me from my sin and satan's deceptions I can testify that Bob's warning is right on. If I have any constructive critism to his remarks I would encourged him to include more biblical reflections on our identity in Christ that comes through receiving the Gospel personally.

"our identity in Christ"? you miss the point. It is not about ourselves. It is all about Jesus Christ Himself.

How many go rounds do we as the people of God have to see. We all know the scriptures say, that in the last days there will be false prophets (I do blieve in the true prophets of God) and false teachers. Every wind of doctrine. In reality there are a lot of good books that have been written in the kingdom of God but in reality there is only one book that we all must have and that is the Bible. It is enough! Our world, our media, our time, our crazy desire to be movie star important, to gain influence along with money and most important is that we are not being very very carful that we are not introducing ourselves to another spirit. Wow! Anyway, I agree with the lady from South Africa and her comment also. Thank you!

Excellent article. We need to be diligent otherwise the roaches will crawl into the house through any crack they can find. I mean that as an allegory since satan is quick to find any avenue possible to dilute the Gospel. Also, this hasn't happened overnight. Paganism has made inroads from the very early days. And how quickly we re-define pagan. Did you know Christmas was outlawed by the Puritans because they recognized it as a pagan festival? Now, if anyone dares to remind us that it is simply a re-dressing of a day dedicated to the pagan sun-god Mithras on Dec 25, that person is labeled as a kook who brings dissention to the body of Christ. Dare I mention Easter?

Nothing new, really. People have been co-opting pagan and Wiccan elements for a very long time. Remember Larry Lea and his 'Tarry One Hour' system? The section where you turn to the North, South, East and West- that's a Wiccan ritual called 'warding'. Supposedly creates a force of protection around one. It was just one of many things about Lea's work that flipped me out. There's also problems with LaHaye's four Temperments: they come directly from Greco/Roman and medieval traditions- traditions that are based in humoral theory, astrology, and portions of the pantheon of gods. How can we trust this teaching when it has spurious sources? I will admit to doing something similar. I've been teaching a Comparative Literature unit comparing the Harry Potter to classic Epic and Saga works. The Four Houses ('homerooms' sort of, that divide adminisration and provide a ready-made social circle. One of my students likened them to fraternities) are Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. They embody strong personal traits of the students in them; in order, Courage, Hard Work, intellectualism, and 'Enlightened Self-Interest'. I tend to identify with the Gryffindor traits, my fiance with Ravenclaw. A number of my students have identified some of the heroes of the sagas, etc, with the personality trend in Harry Potter, and it is most enlightening when we are discussing archetypes. HP draws from a lot of classical works (Rowling was a Classics major in college) and is an exceptional tool for learning to identify broad themes, characterization and literary trope. I DO NOT, however, attempt to liken the HP ethic or personality traits with Biblical study. To use a modern, fallible author to interpret the Scripture- how stupid is that? Well, stupid maybe, but not enough- too many people are still dabbling with outside 'understanding' of immutable Truth. And that is technique not to be trusted.

Thank you for your article - I am 100% in agreement with you. I have to admit, that the personality profiles in Purpose Driven Life were my first RED LIGHT that all was not 'kosher' with the teachings in this particular book (and went on to discover more and more). And now this translating of these personality profiles into the four basic elements as they call it - is so pagan it is frightening. Why would we as Christians even want align ourselves with the works of the evil one when the Word specifically tells us not to even touch unclean things? What spiritual adultery - where will it end? Another of her quotes from the TBN show, which you can watch by going to TBNs site was: So we have developed an on-line personality profile. And now I am working on something about the Biblical characters. Like King David was a wind / fire, which was very-always in motion-hes willing to confront, confront. Hell fight at the drop of a hat. He doesnt care about his size. He sees a giant. Thats a fire. We tend to over estimate our own natural abilities. But he saw himself as a child of God, so he went for it.LB Jones sure doesnt know much about David after all, does she? Remember the cave incident when he left the spear at Sauls side while Saul was asleep. Over and over again, as David matured, he refused to do Battle with his enemies. He did not fight at every chance like LB Jones has said. On a lighter note though, it has come to my attention that many of you do not know about the upcoming conference featuring the seemingly Good Witch, "Liar Death Jones" and the The Lion, King Blanched" and their side kick, The Tin Man, Sick Warring, You may have known The Tin Man by another name but since his illness he just goes by "Sick." He's the one who used to wear Hawaiian shirts until he ripped them all trying to find his heart beneath the tin. Tragically, He scratched and itched himself so badly in the process that he was advised by both his Internationally Acclaimed African and Korean Spiritualists not to put anything over the tin until he healed. All three will be teaching anyone who will give them an ear to itch, from peons like us to CEOs, how to follow the Yellow Brick Road To Success." Sick has become good at itching ears since his bout with his heart problem. Happily though, all ended well! After much purpose driven soul searching, The Tin Man, Sick Warring, finally found a Heart! And since then he has spent most of his time spreading Love and Peace and more Love and Peace around the Globe. He has been so excited about having a heart, even though it is not a new heart, that he majors not only on teaching others how to love their enemies but also how to fellowship with their enemies. Like he says, Love makes the World go round. He will be teaching from his 5-point series How To Have Peace Among Men Whose Hearts Are Deceitfully Wicked. You'll be equally mesmerized by The Good Witch, Liar Death Jones' teachings on earth, wind, fire and water, as she hypnotically waves her hands throughout her presentation, as your eyes easily follow the ruffles swaying beneath her invisible magic wand. If you are lucky you might go into a trance and levitate. It has been suspected she secretly clicks her shoes to make that happen! The Lion, "King Blanched" will close out the seminar with his teaching on how to walk a labyrinth backwards while chanting I think I can, I think I can in order to overcome fear and gain courage. Come and learn how to "Lead Like The Devil, sponsored by EmergentsRus and WizzardsRus. That's enough though. I won't tell you anymore. I'll send the flyer on the Event soon with more details. From one Emerging munchkin to the rest. P.S. Oh, Yeah the Band will be Let Her Rip who is just back from the Orient, where they sang for a group of ancient hollieo prayer riders. (Just Joking!)

I am so sorry, I many of you wondering what a "hollieo prayer rider" is. Over in the Orient there happens to be a group of well respected but little known men who ride Camels through man made laberynths in the desert. They pray and meditate as they ride and they are known to do this for days on end.(has someethnig to do with the fact that the camel can go without water for a very long time.)Most of you have heard of the show on TV where you bring your pet and together you do Yoga? Well, "Let Her Rip" is hoping they can bring back this idea and reach the Equestrian Dressage Riders. Cowboys are already coming in and now EmergentsRus are targeting the more upscale Dressage group where they can bring their very own horses and take part in the prayer labyrinths together. Cool! Right? "No man left behind!" That's what they are saying!

Yet another false teacher. We do live in scary times as predicted. I enjoyed your response to the article. When you mentioned the TV show on pets and yoga I thought about a service performed in our area. In our town a local church has a special blessing service once a year for pets. Can you believe it? The church parking lot is packed. Since when do we need to have our pets blessed? I'm wondering if you have heard of this. Thank you for your time.

Yes, I have heard of that. I believe some Catholic churches have been known to bless animals. Actually, I don't find that as rediculous as blessing the Christmas toys. One church a few years ago had a time of blessing the Christmas toys. I wondered if it was to ease the minds of the parents who were giving their kids Pokyman or Harry Potter stuff. Maybe some of those Grand Theft Auto games. Who knows but it seemed real wierd to me. I was raised Catholic and each winter, the Priest would bless us so that we would not get colds that winter. We would go to the alter and He would cross two candles and place them under our chin, around our neck and pray for us. It just seems to me, rather than having a special yearly ceremony to bless us so that we will not get colds or a special service to bless your animals, it would be better to teach people that they can pray for themselves and their own animals. (I pray for my dogs to be healthy and when they are sick I pray for them.) It sounds like another way of controlling people rather than teaching them to minister to one another. In the Catholic church the priest did everything. They didn't teach the people to do anything themselves. The bible says believers will lay hands on the sick and they will recover.
