Worldview Matters with Brannon Howse

Brannon's guest is Chris Puplava of financialsense.com and their topics include: 1). CNBC financial wizards tell us on August 5th that the commodities bull market is over and it is time to sell, sell, sell. Really? When did the government fix inflation, the banking crisis and our 53 trillion dollar debt? When did the government stop printing money like nuts to pay our nation's bill? 2). The feds have not been honest. Chris explains the hard data that reveals America has been in a recession since the last quarter of 2007. 3). The feds like to go back a quarter and re-do the numbers. In other words, when the news is bad, they cover it up and then when the quarter passes they print the real figures. 4). What will it take for Americans to realize the government is not the solution but the problem? 5). What can those with money do to get ready for hard times? 6). Why oil is going to go back up. 7). What can people do that are living pay check to pay check to get ready?

The Emergence of Imaginary Eschatology

The Emergence of Imaginary Eschatology

By Bob DeWaay

Imagine a world where everything is getting better because God is still creating it. Imagine a world in which there is no more entropy (the principle of heat loss that means that everything left to its own heads toward disorder). Imagine a world where creative people are co-recreating the world with God. This imaginary world is the world as it exists in the minds of the leaders of the Emerging Church.

In a section of the book A is for Abductive – The Language of the Emerging Church, Leonard Sweet, Brian McLaren and Jerry Haselmayer reveal their understanding of “the eschaton.” The heading of the section is called, “The end of entropy.” They state, “In the postmodern matrix there is a good chance that the world will reverse its chronological polarity for us. Instead of being bound to the past by the chains of cause and effect, we will feel ourselves being pulled into the future by the magnet of God’s will, God’s dream, God’s desire” (page 113).

Let us consider some of these concepts. The “postmodern matrix” suggests that our socially constructed “reality” has a very tenuous relationship with the “the way things really are.” Since we are deemed to be in a mental matrix and are quite unable to use the traditional tools of study to determine what aspects of our beliefs are true or false, we are now liberated to have a paradigm shift to a matrix that is more appealing. Given such newfound liberty, why not opt for the scenario that is most pleasant? For Emergent leaders, that is a world where God is working in history with us to head back toward the Garden of Eden now, since they have imagined a world with time running backwards rather than forward (assuming that is what they mean by reversed chronological polarity).

The problem with being bound by the past, in this thinking, is that we live in a world that is cursed because of sin. Entropy is one example of the effects of the Fall. According to the Biblical worldview, God created the world, called it “good” and completed creation (Genesis 1:31-2:2). The rebellion of Adam and Eve led to expulsion from Eden and a curse on the entire creation. Romans 8 tells us that the whole creation is in slavery to corruption. In the imaginary matrix of the Emergent Church, the results of the Fall are being progressively undone now and we can expect the world to become a better place as we “co-recreate” it with God. Doug Pagitt says, “And God also, invites us to be re-created and to join the work of God as co-(re)creators. . . . When we employ creativity to make the world better, we participate with God in the re-creation of the world” (Church Re-imagined; 185). In the imaginations of these men, we are becoming unchained from the results of the curse and are helping God re-create paradise.

The benefit of an imaginary worldview is that it can be anything one wants it to be. For example, even though the second law of thermodynamics (entropy) has been demonstrated to be true and is accepted as a scientific fact, one can imagine a world where it does not exist. In such a world one could create a perpetual motion machine. Such a world would not tend toward disorder and would not require continual effort to maintain order (like cleaning and repairing houses). Add to this the fact that since God does exist, He could undo entropy, re-engage in the process of creation, and make the world get better and better in spite of human sin. Why not imagine that He will?

The problem is that saying “peace, peace” when there is no peace is the essence of false prophecy. The world is not heading toward paradise through a collaborative effort between God and man; it is heading for judgment: “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. . . But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells” (2Peter 3:10, 13). A Christian worldview sees history as linear, beginning with creation and ending in judgment (Emergent thinking rejects this in favor of a helix). Though various eschatological views have differed on the details about what happens between creation and judgment, nearly all agree that there is a future judgment. The imaginary world in the minds of Emergent leaders is not heading toward a future catastrophic judgment by God. I asked Doug Pagitt about future judgment in our debate and he refused to affirm belief in it.

The Bible tells us how to respond to imaginary eschatology: “Thus says the Lord of hosts, Do not listen to the words of the prophets who are prophesying to you. They are leading you into futility; They speak a vision of their own imagination, Not from the mouth of the Lord. They keep saying to those who despise Me, ‘the Lord has said, You will have peace’; And as for everyone who walks in the stubbornness of his own heart, They say, ‘Calamity will not come upon you’ (Jeremiah 23:16, 17). The Bible tells us that we are headed for judgment and that the only escape is to repent and believe the gospel. Those who do repent will participate when God does create a new heavens and new earth AFTER judgment. Those who do not repent will suffer judgment even if they imagine it does not exist.

The errors of the "Emergent Church" need to be eposed. Pastors of the flock are supposed to protect those in their care from those who creep in unawares in order to destroy the flock. Keep up the good work!

Me thinks the author needs to remove the plank from his own eye before worrying about the speck in other peoples eyes in regards to Eschatology. The whole pretribulation "secret" rapture is nothing but a made up doctrine that is little more then a theology of glory, created by taking half verses out of context and creating a doctrine from them rather then looking at the scripture as a whole.

I was awfully late finding this great article, but I have to respond to the foolish statement above anyway. I don't know what version of the Bible you're reading (you are reading it, aren't you?) but 1 Thess. chapter 4 is perfectly clear about what is going to happen. It was written because of a falsehood that was going around at the time, and Paul wrote it to set the record straight. And he did a fine job! There are many differences in the Rapture and the Second Coming. The Rapture--we meet Him in the air. Second Coming--He sets foot on the earth. Rapture-- only His own see Him. 2nd Coming---every eye will see Him. Rapture---He's coming FOR us to reward us. 2nd Coming--He's bringing judgment to those who aren't His. Rapture---happens in the twinkling of an eye. 2nd Coming--takes some time to execute judgment. Rapture--believers taken to heaven. 2nd Coming--Christ sets up His kingdom on earth. Rapture--could happen at any moment. 2nd Coming---Can't happen for at least 7 years. Rapture---no signs. 2nd Coming---many signs! Rapture---for believers only. 2nd Coming--many signs of Christ's physical coming. Rapture---time of JOY. 2nd Coming--time of MOURNING. Rapture--before the tribulation. 2nd Coming--immediately after the trib. Rapture--no mention of Satan. 2nd Coming--Satan bound in abyss for 1000 yrs. Rapture--Marriage of the Lamb, Rev. ch. 19. 2nd Coming--His bride returns to earth with Him, Rev. ch. 19. Rapture--tribulation then begins. 2nd Coming--1000 year earthly kingdom then begins. I could go on and on, because the Bible has plenty to say about it. Jesus taught it, the apostles taught it, and the early church believed it. As for your foolish statement about " looking at the scripture as a whole," that is how you study Eschatology!!! It is throughout the Bible. I seriously doubt that you've been exposed to the whole Bible, and are relying on the opinions of others for your position on Eschatology. At your own risk, go ahead and believe the other gospel. But your "me-think" attitude and position have said plenty about what you do and don't know. I prefer the "me-study" approach. As for me and my household, COME LORD, JESUS! I do believe we were taught to pray that in the last chapter of the Bible!

03/28/2006 Well mr. me, once again this reader has run across you, or should i say your kind. Not to be cruel but there is a great number of you that do not believe the TRUTH concerning the Rapture of CHRIST'S church. When a christian refuses the TRUTH of the (PRE-TRIBULATION) Rapture, the following is known as soon as they open their mouth. 1. The person has not studied GOD'S WORD as he should. or, 2. This person has been misled by others, 3. This person also calls his SAVIOUR a liar, if he says JESUS saved him. 4. This person also is trying to take the CROWN of RIGHTOUSNESS from christians who do believe. 5.This person also does'nt know the difference between HIS APPEARING and HIS ADVENT. NOTE: THE 2ND COMING OF JESUS CHRIST IS IN 2 STAGES, THAT'S RIGHT! TWO STAGES. This reader stands on the SOLID ROCK of THE WORD. WANT SCRIPTURE? not pieces, my e-mail is rsk@cableone.net.

Wow. I am always shocked by the fact the hyper-conservative evangelical Christians get so hyped up about their view of the end of times. There are hundreds of evangelical scholars who would absolutely disagree with the premillenial view, the pre-tribulation rapture, etc. It makes me sad that so many of you are so dogmatic about your "Left Behind" theology. That's what it is after all. Whereas I disagree with the pre-millenial, pre-trib interpretation of Scripture, I recognize it as AN interpretation. There are at least 5 faithful/evangelical eschatalogical views. I pray you agree to disagree on this. The last thing you should say is that those who disagree with you obviously haven't read their Bibles. That is the height of hubris. Just because Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins say something is fact doesn't make it so. The same goes for Pastor DeWaay.

Pastor Dewaay is correct. There is a judgement coming and whether or not people believe in the rapture of the Church, they must know that a and Just God must have a day of judgement. Those who dabble in false religions are looking for a more convenient road to God. "Straight is the gate, and narrow the way" does not lend itself to convenience or comfort. God Bless you! TAP

Me thinks the poster takes umbrage while foolishly (?intentionally) ignoring the entire basic point. DeWaay's article isn't about what word is used to refer to the events of 1st Thessalonians 5, and/or when it occurs in a prophetic timeline, but rather the basic fact, reiterated over and over in scripture, that there is a Judgement Day coming. This is contrasted with G-d's new best buddy McLaren helping G-d clean up and return the creation to original innocence and perfection. Haven't we hear this before? "I will be like the most high." After all, we're best buds now!

I appreciate articles like this that warn me of the present danger. From wherever he is, Satan has devised a scheme that, if you can imagine, is so huge it has tentacles that now reach into every part of Christianity! We have been warned that it will be so powerful and so disguised that it will, if possible, deceive the elect. I began to see the tentacles of deception reach into my Christain walk 20 years ago and, in the fear of the Lord, I was humbled to admit I was in the midst of severe error. I denounced the Health and Wealth Gospel and came away from it. But today, I see Satan's tentacles reaching into every other section of Christianity, tricking and enslaving those who can't believe they could be deceived. Part of the body saw through the Charismatic "hoopla" while they "patted" themselves on the back that they were "stable and balanced and well grounded." But out of their very midst arose a tentacle that wrapped itself tightly around the undiscerning and is now reaching out beyond thier denomination into other parts of the body, with it's Church Growth methods, Global Peace Plan and seeker friendly/broad path to (make sure you whisper it because it is not a popular doctrine) "hell" methods. And then from the center of Satan's being "EMERGED" another tentacle which wrapped itself around the unsuspecting "christians." "Oh, how do you feel?, Oh, what do you think? Oh, what is your experience? Oh, Did God really say?" Not to mention the tentacle of deception that has now taken hold of the part of the body that loves, loves, loves any sinner, and accepts them and ordains them with their "faults," (which they now mostly call, an alternative life-style, justice-love, or a disease, while purposely avoiding the "sin" word) and are sure they are all going to heaven in a little "glass boat." The scary thing is that all these different sources of error eminate from the same source, Satan himself, and in the end he will bring all these people who stay in this error into agreement and unity under a One World Religion. And those of us who see it, stand back with our eyes like saucers and our mouths wide open in disbelief, as we did when we finally saw the second airplane hit the World Trade Towers. Suddenly, it all came together. "We were under violent attack!" The Body of Christ is under violent attack! And just like 9/11, so called "Christians" are not in agreement as to where the attack is coming from. So many seem to have so little discernment. I will leave with this request that the readers go to www.lighthousetrails.com. once there, over to the left click on IMPORTANT NEWS, then you will see "3/17/06 Brian McLaren calls hell and the cross False Advertising For God" Click on that to hear the audio. It will blow you away what these false leaders are spouting off. In essence McLaren is saying that hell and the cross, as we have known them, are in conflict with a loving God. In essence He says he feels doubts about the existance of hell emerging from his being. Is this man wrapped tightly in the tenticles of Satan or what? The scary thing is that you can see how all these different tentacles of Satan, which reach into every area of the visible Church, are coming together and how this one plan of Satan's will destroy the Church, "as man sees it." The wonderful thing is that the true church of Jesus Christ, those who are truely Born Again and washed in His precious Blood, will survive and be visible to her Bridegroom, whether the world and others recognize her or not! And we will look up when are redemption draws nigh! karen

Karen, You are truely my sister for man has not revealed these things to you, but GOD HIMSELF! What a privilage it is to be trusted with such "priveledged information, and to be considered worthy to stand in battle with CHRIST against satan and his armies. I am blown away by the way you have described the ever increasing deception. And I am daily reassured of my election by reason of the constant attacks from satan who's entire strategy is to deceive, mis-lead, and discourage the saints in an effort to silence the wonderous simplicity and truth of the Gospel of Jesus CHRIST! I am almost daily saddened and frustrated to find that people I thought were "OF GOD" actually believe the lie! GOD has blessed me so greatly by placing me under a pastor who wholeheartedly stands and teaches only biblical truth. Pure and untainted by human opinion or feeling. May HIS MIGHTY HAND gather in many more and advance HIS cause! AMEN- Rachel

Karen -- My name is Tom and I wish to tell you that I appreciate your response, as I did the article by Bob DeWaay. I have a question though. This has to do with the period of time after the tribulation -- the 1000 years when Jesus Christ rules from the throne of David, and all saints rule with Him. Seems to me that, after the big "clean-up" that there will be a time in which things indeed get better as the earth is restored in some fashion towards, as it was in the "garden" -- not fully perhaps but so much better than it is at the present time. Then of course comes the final judgement of Revelation 18 - 20, and 21 gives us the new heaven and earth. If you have the time and feel inclined I would appreciate yout thoughts. By the way even at 75 I still teach a group of 20 to 25 ministry leaders weekly on the idea of building Kingdom Class Ministries, that in everything He might be lifted up. Perhaps if Bob reads this he might want to chime in.

I fully appreciated this writers insightfullness as to what is occuring when we blatantly deny the truths of scripture. It is important that we remember who are real enemy is and what his job description is: to steal, kill, and destroy. As children of God we need to cease warring against one another and be about our Father's business of proclaiming the gospel of truth...while it is day. For the scriptures tell us that night is coming and no man will be able to work!
