If you dare to proclaim that Jesus is the only name under Heaven whereby man must be saved, then brace yourself to be called some foul names.
Here’s how it works. You say, “Jesus is the only way to the Father.”They say, “That is soooooexclusive.”
You say, “God will condemn anyone who is not forgiven through the redemptive work of Jesus Christ.”They say, “That is sooooointolerant.”
You say, “If a person does not act like a Christian, then they aren’t a Christian.”They say, “That is sooooojudgmental.”
But hold the phone.Loaded in the claim that we are exclusive, intolerant and judgmental, is the premise that these things are intrinsically bad.Would it offend you if someone said, “You are such a baker”?Now you may or may not be a baker, but that is not the point. The question is whether or not it is bad to be a baker.
Exclusive
The Gospel is exclusive.Christians who say it is not, are not Christians. However, there is more to it than that.Society excludes people all the time.If a student does not get straight A’s, he gets excluded from the Dean’s list.
You cannot walk into a restaurant and eat without paying. Why?The restaurant excludes non-payers.I can’t show up at 3M and sit at a desk and use their computer.I don’t work there. But when they throw me out on my ear I don’t scream, “You are sooooo exclusive.”
Judgmental
With unprecedented disdain, the pagan or liberal Christian (frequently the same thing) will drip, “You fundamentalists are sooooo judgmental.”
This should be no surprise coming from a post-modern generation that does not believe in objective truth. In their mind nobody is ever wrong about anything. The marvel of the postmodern is that your belief can be the complete opposite of theirs and they will not call you…I pause to type this word with fear and trembling…the “W” word. Wrong is simply not a word in the post-modern vocabulary. When you have the audacity to say someone is not correct, be prepared to be called judgmental.
Once again we must ask, “Is being judgmental a bad thing?”Don’t we judge all day?You judge which grocery store line to stand in.Is that wrong?
Anything that shows a preference is a judgment. The next time you are called “judgmental,” simply ask your post-modern friend which automobile is superior: Mercedes Benz or KIA?When they sayMercedes, then load up and fire away, “That is sooooo judgmental.”
Does that sound silly? It sure does.
Intolerant
This might be the mother of all accusations. These days, to be called intolerant is almost as bad as being called born again.
We simply have to help our slanderous friend read a dictionary. At the core of tolerance is disagreement. In order for me to tolerate or not tolerate you, we must have a difference of opinion.Otherwise, we merely agree.Like-mindedness is not the question; it is how I choose to respond to you.
If I disagree with you but live in harmony with you, then I am tolerant. If I punch you in the nose, then I am intolerant.By disagreeing with you without hurting you, I am practicing the virtue of tolerance, not intolerance.
How to Respond?
When someone calls you one of these filthy names, they are employing one of the emptiest debate tactics of all time: ad hominem. They don’t have support for their accusation, so they call you a name instead. In this case though, the name they call you isn’t bad. They simply say it like it is.
Furthermore, when they call you any of “The Three Insufferables,” they are doing the very thing they accuse you of.Nevertheless, even if we accept their contorted definitions of exclusivity, intolerance and arrogance, their point is ultimately irrelevant.Even if we are all of those supposedly horrible things, that does not change the validity of our claims.
If you say that Jesus is the only means of salvation and they protest that you are being exclusionary, simply respond, “That may or may not be true, but why do you disagree with me?”
When you profess that only those who bear fruit in keeping with repentance are true followers of Jesus, they will insist you are intolerant.Say, “Even if I am intolerant, can you prove that I am wrong?”
The next time you claim that all roads don’t lead to God and they spew that you are judgmental, calmly respond, “Yeah, so?”

Todd missed out on the main reason fundamentalist are call Exclusive, Intolerant and Judgmental; when they get involved in politics and try to legislate that everyone else be forced to follow their religious rules. What you believe is fine with me (I'm tolerant). When you say anyone who votes differently from you isnt a Christian, thats Judgmental. When you say only heterosexuals are entitled to full legal and human rights, thats Exclusive. Most varieties of religion are exclusive, intolerant and judgmental. Thats fine, but when you try to apply that to our pluralistic society, thats Intolerant. Click here to reply to this post
I had to print this one out for my teenage boys to read. They come home from school wearing buttons on their shirts telling people to accept homosexual students. They are not homosexuals, they keep telling me because I am strongly in disagreement with accepting it as a legitimate lifestyle I am judgemental and intolerant. They keep telling me that Jesus was tolerant because he ate with prostitutes and other sinners, that He was accepting of those people just the way they were. This article will help me clarify to them the nuances of these words and what I have really been trying to explain. It starts with a change of heart. Click here to reply to this post

Todd,
Don't forget "I am offended."
"I am offended" is secular double speak for censorship. "I am offended," is used whenever someone wants to silence debate or be judgmental while sounding openminded.
"I am offended," means "I am intolerant."
Learn to use these three words on secularists and watch their blood pressure rise.
God speed bud.

Right on Todd. The liberals that resort to name calling from the people who scream intolerant, racist, bigot, hate monger, to "W stands for Wrong," all are resorting to the tacticts of playground bullies. Why should we let infantile adults get to us, control our thoughts, feelings opnions etc. As children they probably where the same people bullying us. Click here to reply to this post

The whole point of Todd's post was that people resort to name calling. Oddly enough the first comment ranges in "bad names" from "liberal" "playground bullies" and "infantile" The point is, be bigger than the names. I don't agree fully with Todd's post, but I think that the name calling in this first comment is exactly opposite of his point.
I believe when Jesus said he came to save the world, that he was actually being inclusive, offering it to all. Just because one doesn't accept an invitation, it doesn't mean they weren't invited, thus ruling out exclusiveness of Christ.
Christians are to be filled with love and acceptance of people, not always agreeing but loving. That would rule out intolerant.
And I don't see Jesus taking a whole lot of time criticizing people that were not already followers of some religion. He always spoke love and truth to people with no affiliation. Showing them the difference between the religious bigots of the day and Jesus... the revolutionary movement. Click here to reply to this post

It sounds like someone hasn't read their bible...Jesus did a lot of condemming.
Mat 23:13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
Mat 23:14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
Mat 23:15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
Mat 23:16 Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!
Mat 21:43 Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.
Mat 21:44 And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. Click here to reply to this post

Enjoyed your post. You were talking about Christianity being inclusive. I think if you walk down that road a little farther you will see why Todd goes the other way.
If I say I am inclusive then Joe Smith says "ok I want into heaven". However, he doesn't accept Jesus' sacrifice, stays in the same immoral state that he is in. Now you tell Joe that he can't get in to Heaven. "What!", he says "you told me you are inclusive. Now you won't let me in because I didn't do what you told me to. You are being exclusive!" See what I mean? I agree with you that the invitation in a sense is inclusive, but in practicality it is exclusive.
As soon as you say that not everyone will get into heaven you have made it "exclusive". In other words, if I don't want to live for Jesus and accept His sacrifice I should still get into heaven under an inclusive offer. Of course, that is not the case.
Hope that helps. Click here to reply to this post
