Churches Dumbing It Down: This Is Not Funny

Churches Dumbing It Down: This Is Not Funny

A lady walked into her pastor’s office and announced, “I’m leaving my husband to live with my lover.”

The pastor calmly asked what led her to that decision.

The woman confidently proclaimed, “Ephesians 4:24 says we are supposed to ‘put on the new man.’”

Now, you might think that is just a joke, but it was told as a true story by the pastor.  That makes this story the opposite of a joke.  That makes it a tragedy.

Five centuries ago, Erasmus (who laid the egg that Luther hatched) argued with Dr. Luther about translating the Latin or Greek Bible into the vernacular of the peasantry.  Erasmus warned there would be no end of misapplication of the Bible if regular folks were allowed access to the sacred text.  Erasmus was right.

Do the benefits outweigh the negatives?  My answer is the same as Martin Luther’s.  The ability for lay people to read the Bible far outweighs their often ridiculous interpretations.

That leads us to the big question, “How do we help people understand how to read their Bibles correctly so they don’t end up ditching their spouses?”

It seems to me the answer to that question lies in another question.  Are people stupid or not?

According to modern day, seeker sensitive models for church growth, the answer is a resounding, “People are morons.”  Why do I believe that is their answer?  Look at their programs.

Youth programs:  Bye-bye catechisms…hello fun.

Adult programs: So long theology…hello self help.

Sunday sermons: Adios teaching…hello inspiring.

“Dumb it down” is the battle cry of the modern seeker sensitive movement.

Contemporary seeker sensitive leaders encourage us to entertain visitors in the hopes they will become regular attenders.  The last thing they want to do is challenge people in the pews to use their noodles.  Learning is not fun and visitors won’t come back.  These churches are entertaining the masses so people can go to hell happy and make bad decisions along the way.

Let me argue: people are not stupid.  They have diplomas, read manuals, run computers and follow instructions at work.  Can we agree that they can handle being taught multi-syllabic words?

Consider the book of Romans.  It is loaded with big thoughts, heavy theology and gasp, big words.  Paul was writing to plain old people, not a bunch of theologians. Unless people today are dumber than the Romans, can we start respecting their intelligence?

Look out; here comes a big word right now: HERMENEUTICS.

If people can understand the rules of driving a car, can’t they learn the rules of interpreting Scripture?  Here are just a few principles.  As you read these, ask yourself, “Could the average church-goer grasp these?”

  1. Understand “progressive revelation.”  God’s message has been revealed in stages.  Many messages were given to a certain people at a certain time for a certain reason.  For instance, God told David to go slay a neighboring country.  We would not take that verse and attack Canada.  If doctrinal teachings are not re-iterated in the NT, be careful not to formulate theology based solely on O.T. writing.

  1. Understand Literary Context.  Don’t just read a single verse without reading at least the paragraph in front and after it.

  1. Interpret unclear verses in light of clear verses.

  1. We should understand the meaning of a word by the way it is used in a sentence, a sentence by the way it is used in a paragraph, a paragraph by the way it is used in a chapter, a chapter by the way it is used in a book.  Hold on, there’s more.  Understand a book by comparing it with other books (especially by the same author) and one Testament with the other Testament.  That is how you interpret Scripture with Scripture.

  1. What is the author’s meaning?  Don’t ask, “What does this verse say to me?”  Instead ask, “What does this verse say and how does it apply to me?”

  1. Distinguish cultural customs from trans-cultural principles.  Is the teaching culture bound (eating meat offered to idols) or of a permanent nature? Is there a trans-cultural principle easily observed? (greet with a kiss vs. a handshake)  Is the custom reported or taught in Scripture (polygamy)?

Now how difficult was that?  Let’s stop treating people as if they don’t have the ability to learn principles like these.  Let’s respect them, teach them, challenge them and talk up to them.  Then we won’t have women leaving their husbands to “put on the new man.”

I agree with Mr. Friel. Many people have moved into the "Hebraic Roots" movment because they are - because of studying the Bible - noticing the incongruity between Biblical instruction and church tradition.

This is not a reply. This is a message to those who review these, for this is the only way I know how to contact you. My last reply was never posted. As seeing as how my first reply was posted in either a day or less, and it has now been about three days or so since I wrote my last one I can only assume that this is purposeful, not a "just have not been able to get around to it." Perhaps I am wrong, but perhaps I'm not. At any rate, I am curious as to why my last response was not posted and would ask, with kindness, for an answer. It could perhaps helpo me in the future to know how better to respond in an acceptable way. Please feel free to reach me on my e-mail, manic.drummer@gmail.com, if that suits you. Thank you. I hope someone sees this.

I agree generally with the viewpoint in this article, but it seems to me that the entire concept of "seeker-sensitive church" rests on - and is a tacit admission of - comrpomise with what can loosely be called the current culture. If we want to know how to be "seeker-sensitive" we should look to Scripture, and learn there how to go about relating to unbelievers - seeking or not. Truth after all is covenantal, not mechanistically absolute. People who are outside the Kingdom, are incapable of truly "seeking" God unless God first extends grace to them and by His Spirit calls them to Himself. When God calls a person to Himself, they are converted and only then can truly "seek" His way as set out in Scripture. Church, and those who belong to it must warn the lost, and teach and edify believers, not compromise activity and standards of teaching and preaching in a misguided attempt to "do evangelism" in unbiblical ways.

I agree with Todd and I am experiencing the dumbing down at church. We are doing John Eldridge's book, Waking the Dead. I have had two long conversations with my pastor. This is a perfect example of the dumbing down. My pastor's comments are that we have to have cookies on the lower shelf for the seeker. I am reminded that the Word is perfect for yesterday, today, and tomorrow, that it does not return void, and that it is good for teaching and rebuking. It does not need to be illustrated by the present day movies. I am being convicted that I need to find a church that is truly preaching the Word. Articles and teachings about the new movements in many churches are truly being provided for my benefit. Thank you.

Straw men are mighty easy to knock down, aren't they, Todd? Listen, I agree with the substance of the article, but this sentence is ridiculously over-the-top, and hurts the credibility of the rest of the piece: "These churches are entertaining the masses so people can go to hell happy and make bad decisions along the way." Look you want to disagree with the method? Fine; I have my own serious reservations. But when you suggest that the goal of these churches is "so people can go to hell happy", you're not telling the truth. We can certainly critique positions and philosophies without resorting to such tactics...

I really appreciated this article. Coming out of a cult (Mormonism) I am concerned at how little solid Biblical theology is taught in today's churches. Most converts to Mormonism come fromm nominal Christian backgrounds. If people knew the word of God (the Bible) frontwards and backwards they would not fall prey to the devil's deceptions! I striongly encourage Christians to study the Bible and TEACH your children truth!

This is a very good article and I agree with Todd. What really amazes me is this; people who are not Christians and try to quote the Bible to put down Christians. Then there is the new Christian who thinks he is now a Bible expert. Sadly, some preachers don't have understanding either. The average I.Q. is around 100, so most people really aren't very smart. The Holy Spirit will help them understand,if they desire to know.I've studied the Holy Bible for half a century and I'm still thirsty for more and learn something new everyday.

You hit the nail on the head, Todd! I'm thankful for my pastor father who is commited to teaching the Word, and won't compromise his teaching in any way to make people more "comfortable". Keep up the great writing! American Christians need to hear more of this.

Perhaps some seeker sensitive churches are attempting to incorporate the columnist's first point in the list of weightier concepts needing to be taught: progressive revelation. Is it not possible that someone attending a service for the first time may be at a completely different place on their spiritual journey than someone who has been walking with Christ for some time? If this is possible, would it not be reasonable to attempt to make this experience and exposure to truth as accessible as possible to this person? Is it reasonable and spiritually mature to present appropriate messages to appropriate audiences in appropriate contexts? Jesus' methodology appears to do just that and that is certainly the way wise parents approach parenting. Would this not be important as well in the context of those who have never had or have had limited exposure to spiritual thinking? The article did not refer to any other training resources/groups/discipling classes that are core and essential to many seeker sensitive churches' strategies. Instead, a reader could perceive the writer intended to paint all seeker sensitive churches with a very large brush. That, in my opinion, would be a "dumb" thing to do.

I agree with this posting. There are some great, bible-teaching seeker sensitive churches. Let's don't discount all of them in light of some that are watering down the truth. I am part of a SMALL church, VERY sensitive to those who are not Believers OR spiritually mature; yet, we continue to preach the uncompromising Word of God - IN A WAY THAT EVERYONE CAN UNDERSTAND. And, yes, we have small groups where people plug in and add to their spiritual growth. When we stand before God (as we all will), I want God to say, "Well done, you bore witness to the simple gospel of the Good News" - not "Well done, you impressed everyone with your intelligence."

I agree with the above two posters. While you raise some valid points, those points can not, by any means, be applied to every single seeker church. One could use the same type of thinking and say that every traditional church (which is what your article seems to, through implication, promote, though I may be wrong on that point) is full of bickering, selfish, holier-than-thou and very much fake/if-it-looks-good-therefore-it-must-be-good people. I have seen the above in many "traditional" churches, but it would be foolish of me to claim that every single one is that way. To reiterate an above poster, most "seekers" (and by that I mean people who are either unbelievers or perhaps those new to the faith) are no where near in their spiritual journey those Christians who have been Christians for a much longer time, and therefore might have a much harder time understanding some of the concepts long time Christians take for granted. However, your claim that seeker churches dumb things down is quite unfounded. I attend a seeker church, and this past Sunday the message was one dealing with philosophy, theology, and in general some incredibly deep, Biblically founded, intelligent stuff. I say all of this with as much respect as I can muster, and please believe me when I say I do respect you, but the truth is you are wrong about seeker churches. Perhaps this is because you have not been exposed to many, or perhaps it's because the ones you have been exposed to aren't very good examples, but I urge you to re-evaluate the claims you made.

I disagree with the above three responses. They seem to say that their God and Holy Spirit is not powerful enough to lead an unsaved person to the truth and salvation. Well, my God and Holy Spirit is powerful enough to lead anyone to the Truth without having to compromise or dumb down the Gospel. I do not believe that the unsaved come to salvation by feeling good but by feeling miserable. Their realization that they are lost in their sin should make them feel miserable. This is when the Holy Spirit can change their heart. These dumbed down churches try to attractg the unbeliever to the "comfy church spirit." Years ago, I attended one of the earliest mega churches in this country. The pastor never dumbed down the message and the unsaved were blessed by the message to have their hearts softened. You can all read about it by finding a copy of "Here We Grow Again" by Marvin Rickard. It has been out of print for twenty years so Amazon is a good place to find it. I have half a dozen copies I share with church leaders occassionally. As was said during the Reformation, "Sola Scriptura"

With all the talk about the seeker sensitive church...and the various definitions of what that means...we need to keep in mind what the Apostle Paul said in Romans 3:10ff: as it is written "There is none righteous, not even one; There is none who understands, There is none who seeks for God; All have turned aside, together they have become useless..." Need any more be said? Unfortunatly, yes, more must be said. The only way one seeks after God is if the Holy Spirit is causing them to do it (Jn 6:44,65). Since this is the case it is hard to believe the Holy Spirit is incapable of comunicating the truth of the Word of God even the first time it is heard by a biblically illiterate pagan.
