Arrogant, Irrational Hypocrisy: Humanist Comedian Bill Maher’s New Movie Is Full of Falsehoods, Bigotry, Ignorance, and Hypocrisy
By Dr. Ted Baehr, Publisher of MOVIEGUIDE®, and Dr. Tom Snyder, Editor
“Religulous,” comedian Bill Maher’s new movie attacking Christianity and religion, is full of lies, half-truths, false assumptions, logical contradictions and fallacies, distortions, intolerance, prejudice, bigotry, arrogance, ignorance, and hypocrisy. Opening Oct. 3, the movie is a pathetic propaganda piece that will warp the hearts and minds of the gullible and the ignorant. It is also very poorly researched and argued.
Maher’s diatribe starts out innocently enough.
First, he tells the viewer how he was raised a Roman Catholic, even though his mother is Jewish. He makes a couple light jokes about this religious upbringing. For instance, he jokes that, because of his mother’s Jewish background, he brought a lawyer into the confession booth with him. Then, Mr. Maher visits a small trucker chapel and starts questioning the pastor and a small group of men about their Christian faith. Though one man angrily stalks out, the others do a good job of answering most of Maher’s questions, then pray to God with him that God will answer all his questions. After the prayer, Maher thanks them for being “Christ-like” instead of acting like “Christians,” as if the two words are inherently antonyms.
The rest of the documentary is filled with lots of vitriol and ridicule, even during its lighter moments.
Included are ambush confrontations with many Christians and a few Jews and Muslims, as well as two ex-Mormons (see also the Los Angeles Times, “The Big Picture” on August 7, 2008, by Patrick Goldstein for solid proof of Maher’s clearly unethical ambush interview tactics).
At the end, Maher launches into a diatribe comparing all religious leaders and believers, including President George Bush, to evil and ignorant Muslim terrorists. After making that overbroad generalization, Maher angrily denounces people of faith for being too certain and too judgmental. He then tells them that it is actually more “humble” to acknowledge doubts and belief in God and religion, like he does.
First of all, let’s deal with some of the movie’s outright falsehoods.
Although Maher has never studied under a real biblical scholar as far as we know, Maher contends during the movie that the Bible never teaches original sin and that Jesus Christ never promised his followers clothes, shelter and food. Both of these assertions are false. In Genesis 8:21, God himself says that the heart of man is evil from his youth. This doctrine is repeated in Psalm 14:1-3 and in Romans 3:9-18. Finally, in Matthew 6:28-34, Jesus tells his followers that God will give them basic food, clothes and shelter if they “seek first the Kingdom of God and His moral righteousness.”
Maher also lies when he says that the virgin birth, life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ are just legends that Christians borrowed from earlier pagan religions. This belief, which is often fomented by many atheists and agnostics like Maher and the late Joseph Campbell, has been refuted by many scholars, including J. Gresham Machen, Ron Nash and Walter Burkert. Two new examples Maher cites, the Egyptian god Horus and the Hindu god Krishna, can be refuted easily by reading the basic Hindu and Egyptian stories about them.
These falsehoods from Bill Maher are horrible enough. What’s perhaps even more horrible is that Maher gets some help in spreading lies from Father George Coyne, Director Emeritus of the Vatican Observatory. At one point in the movie, Coyne tells Maher that some of the documents in the New Testament were written 200 years after Jesus Christ’s death.
As recent books like Lee Strobel’s “The Case for Christ” have proven, the preponderance of evidence has long indicated that all the book of the New Testament were written within 70 years of Christ’s death and resurrection, and probably even earlier than that, by 70 A.D.
It is telling that none of the Christians Maher talks to in “Religulous,” not even Father Coyne, actually makes their living as professional biblical scholars or history scholars, much less as professional Christian debaters. Thus, all the alleged evidence that Maher summons against Christianity and religious faith in his movie is about as empirically and logically one-sided and invalid as you can possible get!
Surprisingly, Bill Maher morally equates all religious believers and President George Bush’s wartime policies with Muslim terrorists and their evil supporters. This charge is not only ridiculous, it is morally reprehensible and anti-American.
Finally, Maher ridicules Christians and believers in other religions as being narrow-minded, judgmental, arrogant, irrational, full of stubborn certainty, and hypocritical.
Of course, at the same time Maher accuses his opponents of these nasty things, he is doing the same things that he just accused them of doing. Maher’s tirade is not only logically self-contradictory, and, hence, irrational, it is also hypocritical. Instead of pointing fingers at religious people, especially Christians, Maher needs to look at himself in the mirror!
We encourage readers to take this information we provide, and the information in our full review of “Religulous” at www.movieguide.org on Oct. 3, and help spread the truth about this pathetic propaganda piece.
Bill Maher’s rantings are not worthy of anyone’s time. They are dangerous, however, because they fool many gullible people who lack basic information.
When it comes to the Bible and Christianity, the national “news” media has failed the American people. Because of laziness, it too has been fooled by the false accusations against Christianity and the Bible by people like Bill Maher and the incompetent, deceitful leaders of The Jesus Seminar. These anti-Christian bigots cannot stand up to the Truth, especially when faced by real scholars and real theologians armed with real knowledge and rational arguments.
As Psalm 14:1 says, “The fool says in his heart there is no God.”

You mention that Bill Maher "never studied under a real biblical scholar" ... perhaps this is true. But, if you are going to write about "basic information" - then, do so.
You cannot explain: talking snakes, Moses living to 900 years old, Noah's ark having two every species on it - there is not a dry dock on earth big enough to construct such a thing, let alone back then or the ability to walk on water or part a sea. Honestly, we all know that this could never happen. If you don't trust me - try it.
It is clear, one doesn't have to study "under a real biblical scholar" to argue to the bibles teachings - these teachings are simply not true.
I will leave you with this: if a person killed another and his excuse was "god told me too" ... why wouldn't you believe them? God did in fact talk to them as well, as I'm should he has to all of you.
I also encourage healthy debating. Click here to reply to this post

Let's see: you profess belief in a three-in-on god, born of a virgin he impregnated, and then sacrificed himself to himself so that his creation can be saved from his own wrath.
Bill Maher says that such is ridiculous!

I've seen Religulous, and it's clearly not intended to be scholarly, unbiased, or respectful of religion. Rather, the intent is right there in the title: to point out that large numbers of people believe in some pretty ridiculous things: alien ghost implants that can only be removed with e-meters, flying horses, talking snakes, virgin birth, and so on.
Furthermore, a lot of these people believe not only that the end of the world is approaching, but that it is desirable. That's part of what makes religion dangerous. Click here to reply to this post

A 750 word limit is Arrogant, Irrational Hypocrisy

How could a rational person refute all of incorrect information and half truths on this site it only 750 words?
The bible is completely inconsistent, so to use it as a basis for logical argument is simply absurd! To take just one of millions of problems with the bible: If there is a commandment about not killing, then why does God tell you to kill in other parts of the bible? Please explain clearly so there will be no possible miss-understanding. As you are all clearly bible scholars and experts in the field, as your previous posts show. I will assume that your post will have absolutely no mistakes, or any information left out, as your will of course be speaking fro God himself... Click here to reply to this post
How Dare He question!

It is obvious that Mr. Maher is a terrorist! How dare he question the very things that we know that are true! He should be sent to jail for verily questioning the virgin birth! Every school child knows that Mary was a virgin and that Jesus is the only lord!
I think that he should be sued for libel for even suspecting that Christ didn't walk on water!
The very nerve to say that Jesus didn't promise his followers clothes, shelter and food! He obviously doesn't know how the Christian George W. Bush and the American government indeed cares for the poor!
Indeed we are faced with someone worse than a terrorist, someone who actually questions what we know to be true, the holy scripture. That Jesus is lord and that all other believers of other religions are heathens and are going to burn in hell. Click here to reply to this post
“The fool says in his heart there is no God.”
I interpret this to mean that even a fool can see through the nonsense of theism.
BTW, I don't see how "going to heaven," whatever that means, solves anything. Suppose you get to heaven, then you choose to rebel against god? God might have even destined you to become the next satan. God doesn't have to arrange the universe for your convenience, so as far as you know, you could have drawn the short straw in the next stage of "god's plan." Click here to reply to this post

that "Arrogant, Irrational Hypocrisy...Falsehoods, Bigotry, Ignorance, and Hypocrisy" are now problematic to religious apologists. Your review is considered, well evidenced, and persuasive--if you begin from a christianist worldview and if you have been raised on a steady diet of American right-wing evangelical propaganda. But if you apply the same test to your own website, to the vast majority of the arguments of the far-right on social issues, to much of the rhetoric and policy of the Bush administration, and to the coded blatherings of the far-right political figures in Congress and in the judiciary, you must reach the same conclusions.
Your review claims several of the grounds of modern rhetoric: that we evidence, that we proceed logically, that we concede at times, that we do not specifically vilify individuals, that we steer clear of the logical fallacies. That's refreshing, I must concede, but I perceive a sadly typical hypocrisy too. You claim those grounds on offense, and perhaps have a point; but recall that Mr. Maher was chased from his position as a well-respected humorist on television after he made remarks about the 9/11 hijackers that were, in retrospect, quite perceptive and were nevertheless reasonable free speech. Since he has proven an apt critic of hypocrisy and blind error on the right and also the left. Are your premises as sound as his? Do you and your speakers and pastors and bloggers dispute the Bill of Rights and claim that the US is a christian nation, for example, or that homosexuals should be the victims of state-sponsored bigotry? YOu know you do.
When Mr. Maher and I no longer feel threatened by christ-citing hypocrites, and by their violent and underhanded acolytes, we will no longer feel the need to fight your devious rhetoric with our own. When your greedy, often insane high priests stop trying to govern by the book of revelations, and stop trying to elect people who care nothing for the future because they imagine a privileged escape from the problems they create, we'll stop trying to embarrass you with your 2000-year history of lies, murder, theft, and graft. When your people stop trying to enforce on our children a culture of mindless magic instead of reason and science, then we'll stop pushing back with annoying proof and evidence that you are ignorant and blind.
So I'm happy to see that you admit, even in this one case, that there is a rhetorical and logical approach to disputing points of opinion or fact or history or logic. If you come to play on that rhetorical field, and play honestly, you will not last long as a subscriber to supernatural creeds. Sadly, I predict that you will not stay long, because supernatural creeds are far easier to defend. But if you hide behind your faith in matters of logic, please stay hidden so the rest of us can go about life in the real world.

Circular Reasoning Doesn't Work

If all you have to defend your holy scriptures is circular reasoning, "God exists because the Bible says so" AND "The Bible is correct because it is the word of God," then you have no rational basis for any type of argument.
The belief that a cosmic Jewish zombie, who was his own father, can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree. Yeah, that makes perfect sense. Click here to reply to this post
