Sarah Palin, the future Vice President of the United States
J. Michael Sharman
In 1984, Geraldine Ferraro became the first woman vice presidential candidate on a major party ticket.
On August 29, 2008, John McCain named Sarah Palin as the woman who will actually become the first female Vice President of the United States.
When she was elected as Alaska’s governor in 2006, National Public Radio said, “She's a moose-burger-eating, snow-mobile-riding maverick who's not afraid to take on fellow Republicans she disagrees with.”
Obviously, she’s no Washington Beltway Insider like Joe Biden who has been in the U.S. Senate for 35 years. But because she’s also not as well known, here’s her short biography.
The 44 year-old Palin was born in Sandpoint, Idaho, on February 11, 1964. When she was three months old, her parents moved to Wasilla, Alaska after accepted teaching jobs there.
Sarah Palin grew up there, just outside of Anchorage, played on Wasilla’s state champion girls’ basketball team in 1982, and won the Miss Wasilla beauty pageant in 1984. (When she became Alaska’s governor, Alaskan convenience stores began selling bumper stickers declaring: "ColdestState, Hottest Governor.")
She attended the University of Idaho, and graduated in 1987 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism.
For two years, she worked as a television sports reporter before becoming co-owner of a commercial fishing operation in Alaska.
Her husband, Todd, is part Yup'ik Eskimo, and competes in the Iron Dog, a 1,900-mile snowmobile race. Sarah is a fisher, hunter, and lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.
She describes herself as a hockey mom with five children: Track, 19; Bristol 17; Willow 14; Piper, 7, and Trig, who was just born on April 18, 2008.
The oldest son, Track, enlisted in the Army on September 11, 2007 on 9/11’s sixth anniversary. An infantryman, he will be deployed to Iraq this September.
No political novice, Sarah Palin was first elected to the Wasilla City Council in 1992. In 1996, she was elected mayor, and served two terms. In 2003, she was appointed chairwoman of the powerful Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission.
The current Alaska Republican Party Chairman Randy Ruedrich was also an AOGCC commissioner. As chairwoman, Palin exposed him for ethical violations.
In 2005, Palin co-filed an ethics complaint against the Republican attorney general, Gregg Renkes, for having a financial interest in a company that was likely to benefit from an international trade deal he was helping to broker.
On December 4, 2006 Todd Palin held the Bible for his wife, Sarah Palin, when she was sworn in as the youngest governor in Alaskan history in 2006 after upsetting the incumbent governor Frank Murkowski in the Republican primary, and then defeating former governor Tony Knowles in the general election.
As governor, Palin asked Alaska's congressional delegation to be more selective in seeking earmarks after the “Bridge to Nowhere” turned into a national symbol of pork-barrel spending. She also successfully passed a state tax increase on oil company profits over the opposition ofoil industry lobbyists.
Governor Palin’s labor with her youngest child, Trig, began a month early while she was in Texas with her husband, Todd, for the Republican Governors Association convention. When the labor hit, she flew to Anchorage where she delivered the baby.
At his birth, the Palin family issued a statement that read: “Trig is beautiful and already adored by us. We knew through early testing he would face special challenges, and we feel privileged that God would entrust us with this gift and allow us unspeakable joy as he entered our lives. We have faith that every baby is created for good purpose and has potential to make this world a better place. We are truly blessed.”
Trig Palin has Down syndrome.
Gov. Palin is strongly pro-life and opposes same-sex marriage, and is perhaps best known to those outside Alsaka for aggressively pushing for drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
Todd Palin will again have Bible-holding duties for Sarah Palin on January 20, 2009 when she takes the oath of office as America’s first female Vice President.

I did not insinuate that Sarah Palin would ever adopt "my values." I realize that only God can change a heart. However... the principal of God and family ahead of personal success is a SCRIPTURAL value, not a personal opinion. My point was that in the past this website and it's contributors have seemingly supported those scriptural values and now that it is politically advantageous, they have had a convenient change of view.
Also, Ruth was a childless widow - not a mom of five children (one in personal crisis, one in grade school and one with special needs) looking aspiring to a 24/7 job as a powerful world leader. The comparison is apples and oranges. There is nothing in the Bible that supports putting career advancement ahead of family responsibility. Click here to reply to this post

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I wasn't going to vote for John McCain either. I was going to write in Alan Keyes, since he was the only one who wasn't ashamed to speak as our Founding Fathers spoke! Unfortunately, I knew he would not win unless the Lord did a miracle! But now we have Sarah Palin. She also loves the Lord, and seems to have brought out the very best in the Republican platform and in John McCain! I also have wondered how this dynamic, articulate, intelligent sister in Christ could "look well to the ways of her household" while looking well to the ways of our nation, but do not our precious missionaries do the same when they pour out their lives on the mission field when God calls them? Do you remember the verse that talks about leaving sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, etc. here and receiving even more (sons, daughters, etc.) in the life to come? All for God's purpose and calling, of course. This verse does not mean "abandon" our offspring of course and not provide for them, but to obey God's call on our life, even to sacrifice and work hard as an example to them to do the same! Sometimes missionaries even have to leave their children in the care of others, in boarding school! Our Founding Fathers pledged their "lives, fortunes, and sacred honor", and you can believe that their wives and children gave and sacrificed to the utmost also in order to give us this great government based upon these "Truths that are self-evident", by the grace of God! Let us uphold our leaders in prayer so they can fulfill God's call upon their lives, and let us look well to the ways of our households, and to the ways of our nation. I'm voting for McCain/Paulin! I am voting for McCain for who can vote for Obama who supports the murder of innocent born alive babies AFTER they are born. But the scriptures tell us to be careful and not vouch for someone we do not know. I would not be too excited about Palin until we have had time to get to know her. God could be looking at this in another way

I am an evangelical Christian and have been all of my life and love the Lord deeply. I have been observing this election and listening to various opinions. As I read the articles and various opinions on this website I find that everyone is "not" favorable toward Obama being President. Now what I am about to say will probably upset most of you, but I believe God is looking at this in another way. There has been many apologies and repentance to the African Americans and that's good but I am sensing that God is going to use Barack Obama to see if the apologies and true repentance is really real. Abortions(which is a crucial area of concern) are not just with babies but with any human life or lives that have been taken before their time, including slavery (I am from a mixed family so I have some room to talk from both sides). I know, you are upset already, but God does work like this. I will prophesy to you now, that Barack Obama will be the next President whether for good or bad. He is God's man for the hour. Remember in the Bible Cyrus was God's man, he really wasn't God fearing, Nebuchaddnezer was God's man when Jeremiah prophesied to Israel. God does use unlikely people to accomplish his purposes. He may put him in to judge our hearts here in the U.S., I don't know, but carefully consider what I am saying. This is going to happen. Click here to reply to this post
I want to vote for Palin...

I have followed Sarah Palin since shortly after she became governor. Everything about Sarah so far has impressed me greatly. She has performed wonderfully and is an inspiration to men and women. I believe she would make a great vice president and president. I said I would vote for her at first. Yet it pains me, after many days of reflection, that I can't vote for her. I want to. I really do. Because we believe that a mom’s first responsibility is the nurturing of the family, my wife is a stay at home mom. I do believe that women can work outside the home. Some are given great strength and stamina. Sarah evidently has both. And up to the present she appears to have been able to do it all. I believe she has the ability to be governor and have a family. Christians all over are already talking about her running for president. Also with McCain there is the very real possibility she could become president while being VP. Being president is a lot more than being governor. The presidency is more than a full time job. It is a life. Any president can tell of the extraordinary time and effort that goes into it. I cannot convince myself that she could even come close to putting her family first while being president. The time a new born Down syndrome child and a 7 year old daughter need cannot be found in a president’s life. I know that they would be 4 years older before Palin had a chance at the presidency the argument is still the same. I would be a hypocrite to my wife and others if I supported support her candidacy, after all I believe and have espoused about the importance of a mother’s role in a family. I cannot fathom how Palin can uphold the Biblical model of motherhood and be president. I would vote for her if her children were older. Yet sadly I cannot at this time. I 100% believe the country would be better with her in executive position than the opposition, yet I am not called to be a pragmatist. I am called to uphold what I believe is right and Biblical. It is up to the Providence of God to make it work out. Click here to reply to this post

We're so pleased and impressed with Sarah Palin, her faith, leadership, courage, and abilities. She seems to bring out the best in a true hero, what it means to be a loyal American, namely, John McCain. They're both Christians, and I think God is giving the voters another chance to keep His hand of protection on our nation. I'm sure there is some environmental reason to reduce the population of wolves in AK, but I disapprove of the hunting them down and shooting them. HOWEVER, I think this become microscopic in the light that Palin is PRO-LIFE, and had her last baby, knowing it would have Down Syndrome. She is doing the right thing by encouraging her daughter to have her baby, and our country needs to see that true Christianity still exists in this country! We'll vote for the Republican ticket, and pray they win. The alternative is unthinkable. Blessings Click here to reply to this post

I am going to be pegged as a sexist and I don't mind. Please note, I am speaking from a mother's heart... so here it goes....
I am not sure what your opinions and statements have been on the subject of putting Family First and parents putting the needs of their small children ahead of advancement of their career(s) and wallets. However, in general it seems that the "Biblical World View" contingent, whom I often agree with, has easily and conveniently abandoned this principle in hopes of political advancement. My son is 15 years old now, but when he was younger I felt I was forced to abandon him when economics demanded a 60+ hour work week of me. (Now I am blessed to be able to work part time while he is at school.) I believe it is because our modern economic system make it difficult for parents, both Mothers and Fathers, to make the difficult and unpopular choice to set aside their personal desires prestige, power and money for the better part... which is establishing and nourishing our marriages and families. I would give anything to have those years back to "do it right."
Why can't Mrs. Palin postpone her bid for the 2nd most powerful person in the free world to a time when her children are a bit older? I know it is a sacrifice for parents to make but the Bible puts the highest priority on the loyalty and care for the family (by both parents) second only to our committment to God.
How does the "Biblical World View" comunity reconcile this? According to my Biblical World View this seems like an obvious conflict. Click here to reply to this post

Hello: I think your conviction worked well for you and you are a better person for it, but why are you trying to impose your values on Sara? Do you actually think that if she does not become VP, she will call it quits and become a stay at home mom? Do you actually think WE have control over her life and decisions? Sara IS what Sara IS, we can't make her fit our mold of what WE think a Christian should be, that mold is not us, it is the Holy Spirit. To say otherwise is to chastize Ruth, and the other strong women of the bible. It is the sort of view that says: "Ok, we know how to make a nuclear bomb, now lets pretend we don't."
