It's called "contemplative" or "centering" prayer and if you haven't heard about it yet, chances are unfortunately good that you will soon. It's invading churches like a virus in which submicroscopic pathogens contaminate the body many hours or days before the victim is aware of its presence.
Contemplative prayer is one of a number of ancient mystical practices or spiritual disciplines, as their proponents refer to them, which are being encouraged at an alarming rate by evangelical churches. It is all part of something called Spiritual Formation and the Emergent Church, a movement that as John MacArthur states in his book, The Truth War, is subtly changing the beliefs and doctrines of the evangelical church as we know it.
In its pure form, contemplative prayer is practiced by sitting still, quieting, and concentrating on your breathing and repeating a word of choice (maybe the name Jesus, for instance) over and over again. You're to concentrate on that word and your breathing, and work to eliminate all thoughts from your mind. Over a period of maybe 20 minutes -- and with practice -- you can enter into "the silence." Your mind is blank. You have, in fact, hypnotized yourself. And it is in "the silence" where "God" allegedly speaks to you.
According to the testimony of one former, now-redeemed New Ager I recently read this is the exact method used by New Agers and Eastern mystics to enter an altered state of consciousness that opens a person up to demonic influence. Ray Yungen, author of the book, A Time of Departing, confirms this and says, "Unknown to most people, a blank mind in a meditative state is all that is necessary for contact with a spirit guide." He also points out, "Those who lack discernment are at great risk."
You may say, "Okay, Heidi, I'll keep an eye out for this practice and avoid it." Yeah, that's not so easy.
Here's the thing: The introduction of these practices isn't direct. It's an insidious offensive by those the Bible would identify as false teachers. As MacArthur notes, "Rarely are their assaults on the truth open and head-on attacks. Instead, they prefer to work underground, drilling little holes in the foundations of truth itself."
Remember Jesus' warning? "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves" (Matt. 7:15).
MacArthur says, "You can't necessarily tell a false teacher by the way he or she appears. Every false religious leader is, after all, 'religious' by definition. Looking saintly is practically part of the job description."
So you may, for instance, be in a wonderful church with fellow Christians who are your fast friends. Everything is going hunky-dory--excellent Bible studies, messages that challenge you, friends you trust -- when all of a sudden there's a new Sunday school teacher or a new pastor on staff. Or maybe it's the same pastor who has taken a class or been to a conference that "changed his life" or "opened his eyes."
Slowly, imperceptibly perhaps, change begins to happen.
There's a nagging feeling in the back of your mind, but you shove it aside because you're told that, "we have to change the way we 'do church' to reach the youth or the different cultures in our neighborhood. We have to become relevant to our society," you're told, "and this generation or culture is into experience!"
Man, but you can't overcome this needling you sense. The messages seem less vibrant. You haven't heard a good sermon on redemption through the blood of Christ lately. The Bible studies turn to book studies. The words to the worship songs don't mean anything. You think, "Aw, I'm just an old fuddy-duddy. I need to get with the program." And you try to dismiss it.
Whoa, Heidi! I thought we were talking contemplative prayer here. Did you change horses midstream?
Nope. This is where it starts. It's been tough to figure out how to explain to you the way to identify the beginnings of the Spiritual Formation and the Emergent Church movement when it tiptoes into the church, because it's morethe absence of what should be present than it is a stark, head-on attack.
And here's another thought to ponder: "Deception often occurs when there is 99 percent truth and just 1 percent falsehood," according to Yungen. And he says, "It only takes a little leaven or white lie to leaven or taint the greater lump, which is truth." And so the transformation begins.
Paul told Timothy, "Now the Spirit expressly says that in the latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed todeceiving spirits and doctrines of demons"(I Tim. 4:1).
And the apostle John commands us, "Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world" (I John 4:1).
It begins with subtle changes in the family structure and teachings within the church. It inevitably progresses to the point where doctrines have been discarded; ancient mystical practices, such as contemplative prayer, are encouraged; the gospel is contradicted; and the cross, as essential to salvation, is nullified. BEWARE.
The preventative medicine for this virus is to know God's Word. Read it. Feed on it. Memorize it. Love it. Then you'll be able to spot the symptoms when they appear. Unfortunately, a love for and understanding of Scripture is decidedly lacking in a vast majority of Christians today, leaving them wide open to contamination.
If you are one of them of whom this is true, I admonish you to get into God's Word today and change that. Time is of the essence!

My first question would be is this type of prayer biblical? In Matthew 6:5-(7)15 we have Jesus' teaching about Prayer.
Repeating the same words over and over again like some magic incantation is in NO way an assurance that God will hear your prayer! It's not wrong to come to God with the same prayer request, Jesus encourages persistent prayer but condemns the shallow repetition of words. Click here to reply to this post
Beware of This Doctrine of Demons

Hello,
I don't know why you pick this particular verse to launch off of for your disparaging remarks in the article. If you read past the first verse of 1 Tim 1,(see below), Paul defines what the doctrines of demons are, which tends to describe many of the attitudes I see coming from Worldview Weekend more than the emerging church... doctrines of coming back under the law!! C'mon guys! We are in the new covenant... a covenant of grace! As I read the bible and particularly Paul's writings, he saves his harshest language for those going back under the law. Let's work together to reflect the new covenant and Paul's teaching rather than throwing potshots at each other.
It's an exciting time to be alive! God is moving and uniting His Bride! Let's work together to further His Kingdom!
In Him,

1 Timothy 4:1-5
1The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. 2Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. 3They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. 4For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer. Bad choice of Scripture; but good to point out heresy

I, too, wonder at the choice of verses to support the heretical issues such as contemplative prayer. The "doctrine of demons" described in 1 Timothy 4 are forbidding to marry and abstaining from certain foods. But I suppose any heretical teaching could be considered as a doctrine of demons. Kevin: I find it interesting that Acts 15: 28, 29 say to abstain from certain practices, foods, and rituals. How does this jive with the "covenant" of grace if ALL things are permissible? If all things are permissible, (but not all things are profitable) with the word of God and with prayer (1Tim4:5), then can a Christian "consecrate" cheating, stealing, and homosexual practices? What I'm asking is; does grace allow for individual preferences or circumstances to be permissible or consecrated because we desire it? Do we consecrate God unto ourselves or ourselves unto God? Is grace unmerited and undeserved, or is it asked for and expected at a whim? Christ said those who love me KEEP my commands; what would we possibly have to keep if grace permits all our wishes? Kevin: the mercy of God to offer salvation unto sinful humanity thru Jesus Christ's atonement grace. However, we were bought with a great price. Our response is NOT to plead grace for our intentional and unintentional indiscretions; our response is to repent and to die with Christ. John Click here to reply to this post
Contemplative prayer

I have read your article and unfortunately think that you fail to draw important distinction between new age practices such as "centering" that resemble contemplative prayer and true contemplative prayer which has been a valuable part of Christian life since the 300's. I totally agree that importing techniques of eastern religions into Christian practice is both undesirable and poses spiritual danger, however, the rediscovery by Protestants of ancient Christian practices that have been preserved in Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox traditions is something that is beneficial. It is also important to note that ancient practices such as the "Jesus prayer" - "Lord Jesus Christ Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner" - predate the centering and meditative practices of new age/eastern religions. In fact there is substantial evidence to suggest that Hinduism/Buddhism developed their centering practices based on their observation of Christian practices used by monks/missionaries in India and other eastern areas. As I do not know whether the failure to distinguish between Christian and non-Christian contemplative prayer was due to inadvertently painting with too broad a brush or lack of information I am also sending the below link for your review.

Appeal to Christianity, not Roman Catholicism!

I fail to be overly impressed with the appeal to A.D. 300 antiquity. Popery and Baptismal Regeneration, isolation in monasteries and other non-Christian distortions did not “benefit” Christianity, but threw it off track! Just because some find Eastern Mysticism to be “beneficial,” is no reason to introduce such leaven into Christianity. It was the introduction of Roman Catholicism that neutered the Church and weakened it, and it was the later separation from this distortion of Christianity that has led to more profitable Christianity. A return to monastic methods of distorted Christianity offers nothing to us today but a return to the weakness of the past. Click here to reply to this post

I try to scan what comes out that seems like the hot buttons and newest hot topics in the christian stream. This lined up so perfectly with what we have been learning in our weekly bible study. Could I possibly say we've been discussing it all year in one form or another. It must be the thing for the body of Christ to beware especially with all the confusion I am hearing about among the young people. I am in total agreement about getting the Word in your heart. Keep up the great work laborers of the Lord. Thank you for staying strong. Click here to reply to this post

Thanks first to my Savior that he lead me to a Worldview Weekend in Jamestown, ND a few years back and then to Brannon House. We were dealing with issues in our home church that are identical to what you have described, Heidi. The in-depth study of a VERY popular book by a VERY popular preacher left me feeling something was amiss. Others noticed and questioned these things that were slowly creeping into our church with our new pastor, but as you indicated above, most brushed them aside. I asked Brannon at that Worldview Weekend meeting to tell me his feelings about the author and the book we had been studying. He encouraged me to trust the gospel I had originally been taught (Gal 1:6-9) and dig even deeper into scripture. He had also recommended Ray Yungen's book. I have spent the last few years researching the emergent church movement and informing family, friends, and elders at my new church who are thankfully very aware of this "doctrine of demons". Regrettably, this doctrine continues to creep and change form as it grabs new unaware followers and new dynamic leaders. Even my 16 year old daughter, who also attended that Worldview weekend and others as well as "the Big Dig" this fall in Kansas City, has noticed fellow students at her Christian school pushing books by authors such as Rob Bell (Velvet Elvis), Brian Mclearen, William P. Young (The Shack) and others that have her alarmed and on guard. Thanks you Heidi and others who have kept this issue at the forefront and are not relaxing or caving to the relentless push by the enemy. I continue to print off information and distribute it to all who will listen.

Christ and him crucified

The author of the article is exactly right. The so-called seeker sensitive gospel being preached today, along with what was talked about in Heidi's article, is ANOTHER Gospel.
Paul said we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumbling block, the Greeks foolishness. Faith in the sacrifice Christ made at Calvary is the ONLY way to the Father. Everything we have in Christ, salvation, sanctification, healing, etc., is given to us freely by the Father, ONLY through our faith in the FINISHED work of Christ at the cross.
If our faith is in other thing, we leave ourselves wide open to deception. Click here to reply to this post

One of the best articles I have read on the site thus far!! Thank you for being the Christian mentor that all of us should be to each other. We can't worry about 'offending' anyone, because to do otherwise would mean we don't care about our fellow Christians. Some may scoff at you, but that is what Christ told us would happen. Beware of being told you are being 'divisive' when you are telling people the truth they don't want to hear. Click here to reply to this post
MY PEOPLE ARE DESTROYED FOR LACK OF KNOWLEDGE

I saw a display of counterfeit currency in Washington DC some time ago. It was all so different and became apparent to me that no one could learn how to tell counterfeit by studying the false money. A person has to study the genuine article and come to know it very well. They have to know about what kind of paper it is printed on and every little detail about it to be able to tell the false article. The same is true here, if we spend much time with The Lord Jesus and search for Him in the scriptures and become to know Him and everything we can about Him then we will not be deceived by a false god.
