DOES "THE SHACK" WARRANT ATTACK?

DOES "THE SHACK" WARRANT ATTACK?
                                    By Jan Markell

To be honest, Christians are not called to "attack" but to "contend" (Jude 3). We're called to encourage discernment and show how today it is easy for wrong to be called right.  So on live radio this weekend, my guests and I ask for your prayers as we tackle a controversial subject and as we "contend." Sadly, I can promise you, many will call it an attack.

(If this issue isn't relevant to you, please don't delete until you see our appeal for conference help below.)

We air live from 9 to 11 AM CDT out of AM980 KKMS, Minneapolis/St. Paul. We are simulcast with AM820 KGNW, Seattle/Tacoma from 7 to 9 AM PDT. My guests and I will consider the controversial fiction book The Shack as it is the number one best-seller on many lists including Christianbook.com and The New York Times in paperback fiction.

Find my earlier writing on it here.

Tackling the subject with me will be Eric Barger from "Take a Stand" ministry and Pastor Larry DeBruyn. We will hear comments from Dr. Albert Mohler, President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary who blatantly calls it "heresy." We are all doing our best to sound an alarm and say that the book needs a "buyer beware" label on it.

Yet millions of Christians have literally bought into this fiction that turns God into an African-American female and the Holy Spirit into a woman as well.  The words and role of Jesus in the book are not the words and role of Jesus in the Bible.

Is it just an emotions-driven book?  Are emotions trumping all doctrine since the Trinity is completely unrecognizable? And Trinity issues are only about 20% of the problem in the book.  The "New Age" implications are legion.

There will be opportunity for your input into this program via our in-studio e-mail. You can "listen live" at AM980 KKMS or AM820 KGNW.

You can always catch it late Monday on my
"Radio Archives," which is both dial-up friendly and also DSL accessible. For podcasting, check this link.  We air in several cities and on satellite and can be heard internationally on the Internet.

You can order individual CDs or become a CD subscriber for $30 a month, getting two CDs a week of our "Understanding the Times" radio program. To do that, call 763-493-3010 or 763-210-8291.

If you would like to advertise on our Minneapolis/St. Paul live program, please call our office. The rates are quite reasonable.

         AN APPEAL FOR HELP, PLEASE

I am also writing in part to ask you for a favor. Forgive my intrusion if these issues do not apply to you.

To your upper left is a small photo of our "Understanding the Times 2008" publicity flyer. When you click on it, it opens into a larger flyer that can be printed and handed out.
It contains all the information one needs for the annual fall event, this year, September 26-27.  Would you consider printing it out and passing it along to those who need to understand the times, contend for the faith, and be watchmen on the wall?  There is no charge for this event but an offering will be taken to meet expenses.

This is our 11th conference since 2002. It features an overview of current events from a biblical perspective, apologetics, Bible prophecy, and even some political insight as White House correspondent Bill Koenig will be one of the speakers. Bill is one of just six believers in the White House press corps.

I sense that 2009 could be an historic year in many respects, not just in America, but around the world.  Our speakers will outline the projected scenarios and from a biblical perspective.

Also, as apostasy continues to run amok, we have Mike Gendron to deal with that issue.  Dr. David Reagan is our Bible prophecy teacher, and Nonie Darwish is one incredible lady. She is called by many "the bravest woman on earth." She is a former Muslim, now a believer, and author of the book, Now They Call Me Infidel. She has many warnings for America.

You can also find conference information at this link.  Please note that our special conference hotel, SpringHill Suites, is about sold out. We have added a second hotel, The Residence Inn. Call either hotel at 1-952-944-7700 or 1-952-942-7479 by September 15th! There is a conference discount at both locations if you use the name of Olive Tree Ministries.

The address of SpringHill Suites is clear on our map.  The Residence Inn is located at 7780 Flying Cloud Drive in Eden Prairie, a southwest suburb of Minneapolis, MN. We have not been able to get this on any publicity other than this announcement. Both hotels are just minutes from the church and minutes from each other.

If you could be of assistance at this event, please contact us at this e-mail address.  We need help in several areas.  Last year's event drew about 6,000 people, which could be down this year but will still be a challenge. Please provide a phone number when you write to the above e-mail address.

Feel free to call our office with any conference questions you have. We will not have the speaker lineup for another few weeks.

Awaiting His return,

Jan Markell

The Shack
Posted On: 08/19/08 04:18:24 PM Age 56, AZ
I read the book, "The Shack" having a Bachelor of Science in Bible from a college that was largely Baptist. Therefore, I was shocked when the author initially represented God the Father as a black woman! However, the book always returned to sound doctrine. In fact, I read it twice just to find the doctrinal errors. While there are some statements that needed better clarification, in no way would I call this an heretical book. Instead, the author represented the love of God in a brilliant way. Just as comprehending God's eternal existance is virtually mind-blowing, our relationship with God can also suffer unless it is spelled out in earthly terms. In that regard, the author succeeded.

Shack and Contending
Posted On: 08/19/08 11:28:18 AM Age 57, OR
I am no theologian but I found the Shack to be an inspiring book. Having completed it once I read it again. Now I realize depictions of our Amighty God as a woman was a stretch but in the end of the book I believe that was dispelled to comform to our understanding of the Bible. But highlighting the power of God's love and consistency opened my eyes and heart to Him and to my neighbor. At the same time the author didn't emphasize the justice of God. However, with an open mind and a desire to know and draw closer to Jesus this book by the power of God's spirit filled me with his peace and a sense of rededication.

  1. Well, that's nice and all, but...
    Posted On: 08/21/08 12:34:42 PMAge 26, OH
But leaving out small details about a person's character, such as God's justice, can be VERY DANGEROUS. On the opposite side of the spectrum, if you give a very honest report of yourself to another person, say an employer, but leave out a tiny detail like, "oh, well, yes, I have killed someone during an armed robbery and never was held accountable to the law", that could be potentially dangerous. God's justice is very dangerous to the unregenerate. When a book is touted as a major theological breakthrough, good for evangelism, etc., but it fails to deliver the law and the gospel but instead offers up a squishy god who loves you without any requirements of you (such as repentance and faith), any discerning christian should run the other direction. I realize the author had a tough childhood, and would prefer a god who can make a person feel all warm inside, like a cup of hot cocoa, but when we take our awesome God out of the bible and recreate Him into our image and to our liking, we are committing idolatry. Pretty scary stuff. If you liked the book, my apologies for any offense. May I recommend a piece of better work? The Gospel According to John. -Deborah

    1. Deborah, have you ever written a book?
      Posted On: 08/25/08 02:19:29 PMAge 56, AZ
I have! Unless you are writing a theologial treatise on the character of God, it's impossible to cover every aspect of His nature. That's why some Christian cards say, "God loves you." They don't say, "God Loves You, but don't forget He's just!"

    2. The Shack
      Posted On: 08/24/08 03:39:51 PMAge 40, NH
Deborah, did you read the shack? I ask only because I haven't read it yet and if your reading the book left that taste in your mouth, I am wondering why. Although the intention is to read a book with an open mind, listening to others who have read a book isn't a bad thing to do. Grace and Peace, Jim

      1. The old "Well, did you READ it?" argument...
        Posted On: 08/25/08 03:57:08 PMAge 26, OH
While I do appreciate forming my own opinion about a subject through my own research (such as reading a book in controversy) before making an absolute statement like "I hate it", I feel delving in deep is unnecessary in this case. Listening to the opinions of others is important, but more important is "whose opinion do you listen to?" So far, I've heard rave reviews from modern evangelicals and emergent church types, and grave warnings from discernment ministry types. If they both highlight the same facts about the book but come to two totally different conclusions on the spiritual benefits of it, I'm more likely to observe the "buyer beware" sticker of the discernment types. After all, weren't they right about Todd Bentley?! So no, I have not read it. But in my defense, I also haven't read anything by Alister Crowley, Timothy Leary, or Brian Mclearen. Hope this helps! PS. Don't need to look at porn to know it's bad for ya.

        1. Huh?
          Posted On: 08/28/08 06:11:30 PMAge 40, NH
What is the supposed offense from? Can you read my opening sentence from my last post Deborah? I asked ONLY for the following reason.....what did I say next? Your, "the old...argument" shows your prejudice in reading, not my intention, words or question as asking an innocent question. I asked for what may have left a bad taste in your mouth if you already read it. The rest of your post shows an overactive imagination and overreaction to your own imagination. If you can't answer a simple question then maybe you are looking to be offended or looking for a fight and seeing it where it doesn't exist. That is certainly the case here. Please try to answer a simple question instead of reading people's minds, your not good at it and it is disrespectful to others not to answer a simple question without accusing someone of doing something they didn't do or say. Grace and Peace, Jim
