COULD THE EMERGENT CHURCH SWAY THE 2008 ELECTION?

By Jan Markell

www.olivetreeviews.org

The President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Albert Mohler, isn’t surprised that many young evangelicals are moving to the left politically. He states, “There is a sense among younger evangelicals that the conservative movement has gained a bad reputation as being against things rather than for them.” Mohler continues, “I think the younger generation of evangelicals looks at a lot of older evangelicals and says, ‘You just don’t get it. You’re not connecting with the issues. You’re too happy, too consumerist, and too materialistic. You’re living in an evangelical subculture.’”

Younger Christians who might be a part of the Emergent movement, which is quite in line with the “Religious Left,” have been seriously influenced by such leaders as Brian McLaren, Tony Campollo, Jim Wallis, and a host of others. And the bottom line is that the under-30 generation could be casting a deciding vote this coming November.

Dr. James Dobson says, “With evangelical leaders who fought against abortion and for protection of the institution of marriage now retiring or passing away, a void is starting to appear. Just like a little wooden boat floating downstream, many evangelical Christians are adrift in new swift currents of a ‘social gospel.’”

Researcher and author Berit Kjos suggests that there is now an emphasis on deeds instead of creeds. She suggests that behind its noble appearance hides a post-modern version of “Christian Socialism,” which many of these young people have bought into. They are more world-centered and perhaps less Word- centered.

Their focus is not that of their parents’ generation. This generation is not bound by anything the “Christian Right” may have focused on. They primarily want to think about caring for the planet and the poor, and will vote accordingly in November. And based on every political analysis, that age group will be turning out in record numbers in November as they did for the primary election. It seems to matter little what denomination they might claim. The more socially minded leaders they follow have convinced them that it is all right to set aside issues such as abortion or same-sex marriage and replace those with ridding Africa of AIDS.  This cannot be ignored.

Conservatives are not against helping the sick and needy; however, they also will not abandon the defenseless unborn to the grinder of modern secular abortion mills.  The “Christian Right” will remain more concerned about “spiritual poverty” and biblical illiteracy.  But neither side has a lock on morality or anything else.

It remains to be seen if these young people who are Emergent Church enthusiasts or followers of the pied pipers of the “Religious Left” will actually solve the problems for which they have a burden. One has to wonder if the post-modern generation even has a grasp on what true Socialism is and its failure around the globe upon masses of people.  To hear some of their leaders talk, today’s religious conservatives should hang their head in shame for the sin of neglect of . . . you fill in the blank.

Change is in the wind, and the Emergent Church and “Religious Left” have done an incredible job of marketing their social gospel and have changed the face of evangelicalism whether conservatives like it or not.

In the 1990s my home state of Minnesota elected a buffoon of a Governor named Jesse Ventura. We paid a steep price for that, and he sailed into office on the vote of the under-30 generation.  If the post-moderns have their way in November, a similar result is guaranteed as they sweep the Left into office. McLaren, Campollo, Wallis, and associates have paved the way for them and made the grass look much greener on the other side of conservatism. But thanks to the Fall in the Garden, every square foot of grass on either side is full of weeds, and there is really no panacea for the world’s desperate problems except for the Lord’s return.

That does not mean that until that time some of the issues being raised should not be attended to. But expectations should be kept relatively low. And no matter what administration rides into the White House on January 20, 2009, much of the glowing campaign rhetoric will fizzle out as man is not the problem solver nor is bigger government.  The only solution is the government that is upon His shoulders (Isaiah 9:6).

But the answer to the original question is “yes,” the Emergent Church has left a permanent footprint on the landscape of the Western world and will likely sooner rather than later even sway foreign policy. Sadly, nine out of ten Christians cannot tell you what the Emergent Church is, so taking marching orders from their questionable leaders it grows larger by the day. Learn more about the Emergent movement at our Web site and the category of “Spiritual Deception.”

Quit blaming the Church
Posted On: 07/31/08 10:18:20 AM Age 47, IL
Think About It, like most liberals, are all over the map. For them history begins today, or for him, in 2000 when George Bush began drawing up plans to invade Iraq. He forgets that for 10 years previous to Bush being elected we were at war with Iraq. They surrendered to the US and the UN in 1991. We allowed Saddam to stay in power as long as he met certain conditions. He violated 18 UN mandates. Clinton was going to go to war with him in 1998 for throwing WMD inspectors out of the country. Enough politics. The issue we are asking is, "why are we losing our youth?". How many of you have read C S Lewis's "SCREWTAPE LETTERS"? In the epilogue Lewis lays out what Satan is up to, especially how he will corrupt the youth and our culture. He wrote that more than 60 years ago. How Satan would take over the schools, the courts, and the media. It is before our eyes. Quit blaming the church and begin making disciples, one at a time. If each one of you who is critical of the church for the supposed mess of the culture does not have a disciple at this time then point those fingers at yourself. My 17 year old daughter and I go knocking on doors or visiting folks each week sharing the gospel and handing out tracts and invitations to church. She is my disciple. She hands out tracts every day on her own. I stress to her that when she is ready she must disciple someone else. Quit worrying about the big picture and get to work sowing seed. The seed is good. It is so easy to point fingers of blame. You want to reverse the trend? Get off your butts and go out to a skate park and engage the young people. If you don't feel equipped to do so go and ask your pastor or elders to equip you. That is thier job. Nuff said.

Think about it
Posted On: 07/29/08 10:30:16 PM Age 47, MT
You know I've voted for Republican presidents for 20 years and several others using the "Pro-life" litmus test. But the truth is - abortion is just as legal now as it was 20 years ago - and it is not going to change. The GOP knows that - but they appreciate the millions of easy votes. Aside from a token bill here or there so they could come back for those valuable votes later - neither of the Bushes or Reagan spent any time really fighting against abortion. With one exception - partial birth abortions - and I'm glad they won. I've been politically active before - I helped gather signatures for the marriage amendment. But then I saw the interview with the FBI agent who interrogated Hussein and saw him explain how Saddam eventually admitted that he had never rebuilt his WMD's after they'd been destroyed the first time. BUT - he wanted people to have the impression that he still had some because it kept Iran at bay and his people under control. That's when I knew we'd been lied to - and very deliberately. As it turns out - the Bush White House began drafting plans to invade Iraq in 2000 (and McCain supported them). Have you ever watched any videos on youtube about Iraq? Have you ever read about what life is like for the Iraqis since the invasion? No. Most of us just hear the daily body count - and the White House never talks about the hundreds of thousands of Iraqis who died - or the 2 million who have left the country - or the 5 million who are "internally displaced". Our servicemen know about this and suffer PTSD and suicide as a result - but how do they describe it to us? People here don't want to hear. Christians usually have compassion on the poor and the oppressed - but where is the compassion for the Iraqis? Since 91, they have not invaded any other country. Number of Iraqis on the 9/11 planes: ZERO. They were not involved in Bin Laden's Al Qaeda - but most Americans confuse those facts - and it's because of the deliberate misleading that has been done by this administration. And John McCain is willing to be led by the same people - and now wants to embroil us in THREE - not just two wars. No - this time, we need to vote on the facts. Unfortunately, there are political operatives who are still pushing hot-buttons on Christians. First the Muslim terrorist emails, patriotism lies, then Rush with the continual "messiah" and "lord Obama" comments - (he needs to held accountable for his outright blasphemy - but I have no faith that will happen, will it). And now the "Anti-Christ" emails. Unfortunately many will fall for those lies. Hopefully worldview readers are more intelligent and can recognize these tactics for what they are. They assume we’re stupid - we need to show them that we’re not. And what about abortion? And gay marriage? Right now, we have two candidates - both have the same stance. But McCain holds out like he’s against it - but when Arizona has a bill on gay marriage in their state - he doesn’t come out and support it. Instead he meets with the Log Cabin Republicans quietly - and says nothing. But yet has no problem smiling and accepting James Dobson’s endorsement - and offers up the same tired threat “the next president will appoint Supreme Court Justices….” and like that is going to change anything. I have come to realize that no matter what the sin - legislation never stopped it - it can only assign consequences. I have worked in residential treatment centers for 15 years. I contribute to CareNet. I’m willing to open my home to teenage mothers. But I’m electing a president, not a pastor - and so for the first time - I’m going to vote on the whole series of issues facing this country .

  1. Interesting, but missing a crucial point

The truth is, both candidates are working against God. That is quite obvious to anyone with ears to hear and eyes to see the truth. That said, it seems you're pushing (without coming right out and stating it) for Mr. Obama. You have rightly discerned the truth about Mr. Bush and what he's accomplished in his tenure; what you lack is eyes to see what Mr. Obama has in store for you. Obama is a socialist, and a "one-world gov't" man. I wouldn't be surprised if "by peace he deceives many" (though I wouldn't peg him as THE anti-christ, just someone who has the spirit of anti-christ). Obama's program is just the reverse side of a two sided coin. The Right will accomplish one type of tyranny, while the Left ushers in another, until all our liberties are abolished. The one plays us off the other, keeping us busy attending to our finances and our ability to consume (or covet). This is not a purely political battle; therefore it will not be won politically. We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers. I am not on either side at this point, and I make that clear to everyone who has any interest in listening to me. I am a citizen of Heaven, God is my King, Christ is my Lord, the Holy Spirit is my counselor. No matter who wins in this election, God's will WILL be done, His Words (every jot and tittle) will be performed until the day of the coming of our Great Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Meanwhile, we are well advised by Christ to attend to walking the narrow path that many fail to find or choose to follow.

Swayed from the Truth
Posted On: 07/29/08 11:26:35 AM Age 61, MO
Those who follow after the Emergent or Post Modern churches are believing lies about God's Word. Those who are following after either the Republican or Democrat candidates in the 2008 election are also believing lies. Then, too, a large majority of Evangelicals are following after lies both politically and Scripturally. So, yes, the election is being swayed from the Truth. But, then, so is the bulk of the U.S. population. Pitiful, isn't it? Maybe we should vote for independent of third party candidates. George Cancilla

Consider this....
Posted On: 07/29/08 11:00:53 AM Age 99999, WI
The Emergent Church Movement is wrong about many things. Those who oppose this movement have frequently made good points regarding the error of this movement. In my opinion, the criticism has reached the point of diminishing returns. I think that Fundamentalist/Evangelical Christianity is placing too much blame on external actors and circumstances to the exclusion of self-examination. The question that Fundamentalist/Evangelical Christianity should be asking is: "How did we fail? Where did we go wrong to allow this (the Emergent Church Movement) to gain so much ground?” I believe that to a large extent, the Emergent Church Movement exists because of the excesses of Fundamentalist/Evangelical Christianity. There is a general lack of humility in Fundamentalist/Evangelical Christianity. It *is* known for what it is against instead of what it is for. This is what attracts so many young people to the Emergent Church Movement. Fundamentalist/Evangelical Christianity must learn how to articulate the certainties of faith in the atoning work of Jesus without projecting an arrogant “we know it all” attitude. It must not project these certainty of salvation to the exclusion of good works. “ For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. “ Eph 2:10 We need to remember: “And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works...” Heb 10:24-25. And of course: “Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. “ James 2:17

  1. Now...consider this!
    Posted On: 07/29/08 09:36:16 PMAge 52, BRAZIL
I agree with "Consider this..." for the most part, but his/her desire to identify the causes of the Emergent Church (i,e., Fundamentalists/Evangelicals being "against" vs. "for" things) doesn't go deep enough. If our churches had preached a more biblical gospel and had grounded new - and older - converts in the Word of God vs. offering shallow, consumer-oriented teaching, I doubt we'd be seeing such interest in the Emergent Church among the under-30 crowd. Heresy would have been more easily recognized. What we have now, however, are, at most, semi-biblically-literate "Christians" who have traded the true meaning of the Cross - "without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins - for something else: Jesus came to do away with poverty, social injustice, and global warming. How sad. Pastors, let's wake up and ground our churches in God's Word again, even if it means losing 90% of our shallow members!
