What God Cannot Do

What God Cannot Do

“Mr. Comfort, I'm sure you've been asked this many times, but humor me: Could God create a boulder so heavy that he himself could not lift?” Andrew Douglas

There are many things God cannot do. These are things related to His character rather than His ability. The Bible makes it clear that God cannot lie. It calls upon the strength of the word “impossible” to substantiate that He is trustworthy: "It is impossible for God to lie" (Hebrews 8:16). He cannot sin. All of His judgments are righteous and true altogether.

He also cannot let injustice go unpunished. If a man murders or rapes a woman, lies, steals, or commits adultery, he "stores up" God’s wrath that will be revealed on Judgment Day.

In answer to the ancient question about the ability of God to create a rock that He cannot lift, I would answer that when it comes to the ability of God, nothing is impossible. Jesus did, however, speak of a large rock. He put it this way: "Whoever falls on that stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder" (Luke 20:18). This was the same Jesus who said to love your enemies and to do good to those who spitefully use you. It was a strange thing for such a kind and loving person to say, until you understand what He said.

When you grind something to powder you do a thorough job. Nothing is left. That’s how God’s justice will be on Judgment day. He will not only punish murderers, but His just wrath will fall on those who have hated someone. He will not only punish adulterers and fornicators, but His just wrath will fall on all those who have lusted after another person, lied, stolen, hated, blasphemed, etc. That’s perfect and thorough justice. No sin (injustice) will be left unpunished.

Rather than being ground to powder by God's wrath, there is an alternative. Jesus said, “Whoever falls on that stone will be broken . . .” If you humble yourself and seek God’s forgiveness (which is in Jesus Christ alone), you will have mercy. Otherwise the stone will fall upon you, which is very fearful.

So I hope I have more than humored you by reminding you that there is a massive stone of wrath abiding on you (see John 3:36), and that God has the ability to lift it off you, because of the cross. It was on that cross that Jesus took your punishment upon Himself, so that Eternal Justice wouldn’t have to fall upon you.

The Answer

God the Father created a cross so heavy that God the Son could not carry it...logic follows that that same Father has created many rocks too heavy for the Son to lift.

  1. JESUS CARRIED THE SINS OF THE WHOLE WORLD
    Posted On: 05/28/08 12:58:09 PMAge 64, OH
The Manhood of Jesus Christ could not carry the cross after being nearly beat to death. But the Godhood of The Lord Jesus Christ could and did carry the sin of the whole world. Dear friend you could not even pay for one of your own sins let alone the sins of the world. In spite of your mockery Jesus died for you too. You will stand before this Judge of The Universe and answer for every word you speak as we all will. I am thankful my sins are covered by the blood Jesus shed. Lou

GOD REVEALS HIMSELF TO THE HUMBLE
Posted On: 05/27/08 12:26:14 PM Age 64, OH
This man has done the ultimate foolish thing. He has made himself the judge of truth which is to make himself god. Any human being that is truly open to truth should be able to see their own human frailty. Any human being should have first examined themselves. Without much inspection we are obviously not much of a god ourselves. Can this man keep himself from getting bald. Can he keep himself from getting overweight. How about keep himself from getting old or keep himself from cancer or some other disease. Has this man ever looked in the mirror. What person among us can cause themselves to be born rich or poor, smart or not smart, big or small, fast or slow, white or black. A person of great wisdom should be able to do these things with ease. If a person can not do these things then he should face up to the fact that his wisdom is very small and realize his humble circumstance. The realization of this truth should cause him to be aware that he must search for truth not decide for himself what truth is. The first necessary character trait that is necessary in this search is humility. The One and Only true God and Creator of the universe REVEALS Himself to humble men who search for Him. Lou

MAN IS NOT THE JUDGE OF GOD - BUT GOD IS THE JUDGE OF MAN
Posted On: 05/27/08 02:54:57 AM Age 64, OH
Man is NOT the judge of God but God is The Judge of man. For any man to ask such a silly question as this shows his ignorance and his invalid reasoning ability. For any man to think God has to pass his silly tests is proof that this man does not even understand the concept of a superior being who is The Creator of all. If God created all that exists then it is simple reasoning to deduct that He has power over all that He has created. To answer this mans silly question, God can create a rock as big as He desires and beyond this mans ability to even imagine yet alone lift. But then no matter how big the rock, God still has power over it. Even if you make the rock as large as infinity, God still has power over it. No matter how big the rock is, God still has power over it. Let us put this another way, any rock that any puny man can imagine God can make and lift. This man wants to put God to the test, let us put this man to the test. Can this man who thinks himself worthy to test and judge God make any rock however small. Lou
