Time to drain the cultural swamp

Time to drain the cultural swamp

By Janet Folger

There are some lessons from Ronald Reagan those fighting in the cultural war would do well to employ. First, we need to re-establish our objective: "We win, they lose."

"We" are those fighting for life, liberty and the family. We are the ones for the freedom to speak the truth and proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ – to be known historically as the "good guys." "They" are the ones trying to censor our speech, destroy the foundational institution of marriage and kill thousands of innocent children every single day. When your objectives leave you with a body count of 50 million innocent children, I think it's safe to refer to you as "the bad guys." History will.

Picture the historic photo-op. The proponents of "choice" standing in front of a pile of dead bodies 10 stories high and 50 miles wide. This is what they spent their lives working for: death. No matter how clever the rhetoric, or how slick the slogan, nothing they say will ever justify it. Nothing. If you're still calling yourself "pro-choice," think for just a minute how well that little slogan did for the Stephen Douglases who believed in the slave owners' "right to choose." There is still time to get on the right side of history, but you better hurry; this monumental lie is crumbling fast.

Yes, no matter the nasty names they now use, history will show the pro-lifers to be the heroes of our day. The good guys. And, yes, the victors.

We've been in a defensive posture for far too long. It's time to start speaking of victory, planning for it and experiencing it. You see, Ronald Reagan didn't set out to survive the Cold War, he set out to win it.

At a time when there wasn't a lot of reason to hope, Regan said, "Let us renew our faith and our hope. We have every right to dream heroic dreams." He said that at a time when not many were dreaming heroic anything. Kind of like now. Reagan summarized our current posture with this: "It's hard when you're up to your armpits in alligators to remember you came here to drain the swamp."

We've been in alligator survival mode, and while it may put the environmentalists in a frenzy, it's time to drain the swamp. Actually, we need to drain the stagnant, scum-filled, mosquito-infested, alligator-ridden swamps in every corner of our culture.

England's former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher toasted President Reagan, praising him "for putting freedom on the offensive where it belongs."

You've heard me say it before: I'm tired of the "giant reports"; like Joshua and Caleb, I'm ready to "take the land." The good news is I'm not alone. Not only is South Dakota leading the way once again to restore legal protection to our youngest children, they have joined the now dozen states who require that women obtain the opportunity to see their child through the ultrasound before an abortionist's knife comes near them. Mississippi, Idaho, Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Michigan, Oklahoma, Utah, Wisconsin and Louisiana have passed ultrasound bills – and more are on the way. By the way, nine out of 10 abortion-vulnerable women who see their baby through a sonogram decide against killing them. The numbers don't lie – the truth is a powerful weapon.

Speaking of South Dakota, did you know the only abortionist in the state of South Dakota is now a board member of the "Vote Yes for Life" campaign? The ones currently doing the killing there have to be flown in from out of state. I've been told that South Dakotans don't like outsiders telling them what to do. I gotta wonder – do they like outsiders flying in to kill their children? We'll find out in November.

Freedom from abortion is being taken on the offensive on multiple fronts. Not only have the former abortionists joined us, so have abortion's second victims: the women who've had abortions. They are the most powerful and plentiful voices in our movement, and they are "Silent No More." That's part of the "Operation Outcry" effort that the Justice Foundation spearheaded. I spoke at their banquet in Houston last night, and their experience of how abortion hurts women will be heard by the courts and the nation. The abortion crowd never counted on that.

Two weeks ago, I told you about the efforts to close the abortion business down, with Troy Newman of Operation Rescue closing down more than 27 himself. I can't wait until he trains the rest of the country to do what he did. I had him on the Faith2Action radio program yesterday, and he spelled out how we can stop abortion with the laws already on the books.

Living life on the offensive is only the beginning. Go ahead, dream heroic dreams. We need to drain the swamps. Speaking of swamps, why not take back Hollywood? Think that's too high a hurdle? Think again.

My good friend Ted Baehr started MOVIEGUIDE® in 1985, when the major studios in Hollywood released less than 1 percent of movies with any positive Christian content. Last year, however, 152, or 50.7 percent, of the movies released by Hollywood contained positive Christian content! From 1 percent to 51 percent. Not a bad start.

Pro-active Christian efforts like the MOVEIGUIDE® movie reviews and the annual Entertainment Industry Report helped to take Hollywood from six movies aimed for the family to what is now 40 percent of the market share. It cut the 80 percent R-rated films in half. And now, every studio has a Christian film division, and several studios are doing major films with strong Christian content. It's happening. And it's not by accident.

Ronald Reagan didn't just set out to protect freedom; his goal was to advance it. He wasn't about surviving the Cold War; he planned to win it. That is what we must do in this cultural war. For life, liberty and the family. Even in Hollywood ... and next? Let's take back the schools!

Alligator Smalligator. It's time to drain the swamp.

Seems like the three earliest commentaries are a bit off the mark. The issue is abortion in this article. Abortion is murder. You are either for abortion (i.e. - murdering the most innocent of all humans) or you are against abortion (i.e. - protecting the sanctity of the human person in the most vulnerable form - a little baby.) Diverting attention away from abortion by comments on divorce, homosexuality, 'bombs and bullets', and "cleaning out the barn" doesn't diminish the fact that abortion is evil. And we need to do all we can to continue to eradicate this scrouge on America and the world.

  1. Not through the force of law you won'r
    Posted On: 05/16/08 08:35:09 AMAge 48, CA
Simply passing a law and then sending fourth SWAT teams to vigorusly enforce them is not the way of the Gospel. It is not for the Church to regulate the conduct of unbelievers but to bring as many people into the fold as possible. Since the abortion rate inside the Church is little different than that of the unbelievers, we have an internal problem and SWAT Teams with crosses on thier kevlar is not going to solve it. Once the CHurch becomes truly Holy (WHich simply means set apart from the ways of the world) Only then can it effect change. And such change will come, not from the force of Law but through transformation through the Holy Spirit.

Who is the swamp?
Posted On: 05/14/08 10:41:51 PM Age 55, FL
Occasionally I see someone whose understanding is really out in left field. You take the cake. It is Christians who are about to be drained. By your logic, I guess that makes us the swamp. It does not one good to pretent we are winning something we aren't even fighting-culture wars. The gays and worldlings are winning that war. I fear that Ameri-canity and professing Christianity is about to be culled. Perhaps it has been too easy to be a professing Christian here. I hope I am wrong. Your worship of Ronald Reagan is patently ridiculous, but my words won't change that. If you are Christian, better fix your eyes and thoughts on Jesus Christ and not on the family, society, or America. America is going to bite believers hard, best to get positioned in obedience to Christ. Return to the truly ancient paths Jeremiah spoke of. Take Christ's yoke, and you will find rest there.

The Victors

You have it right Janet, thanks for the article. Here in South Dakota the pro-death crowd is busily engaged in stopping this abortion ban. More than 46,000 people signed the petitions to get the ban on the ballot this year, only 16,000 names were needed. Many people here support this ban. Maybe someday, like the former Soviets, the abortion crowd will realize that all they accomplished was to build a mountain of corpses.

You also are destroying life, liberty, and the family. Being pro-life is being more than just anti-abortion. War and the death penalty are also killers of life too. And who says that our "enemies" are worth less to God than those who are not our enemies? You can't say that killing one person is more ok than killing another. Talking about liberty, you destroy other people's liberty when you insist that they never disagree with you! You spend so much complaining about the idiots who don't see the world your way. And the family? Who is destroying the family more? Homosexuals? Or is it the 50% (and rising) divorce rate amongst Christian couples in America (50% is the low-end estimate). Divorce is just as destructive to the family as homosexuality is (if not more so). -Dan Smith

  1. Not quite......
    Posted On: 05/15/08 01:00:26 PMAge 48, CA
True, there is more to being pro life than simply being against abortion. One needs to stand against the sexual imorality which the abortion industry supports. Abortion, welfare, and other social programs have become a supporting infrastructure for the sexual revolution. As far as the death penalty is concerned, The first instance of capital punishment was given to Noah when God commanded "Who so ever sheds th bloof of man, by man shall his blood be spilled." Leviticus spells out the death penalty for many other crimes. Jesus never once called upon governments to stop executing criminals. Quite to the contrary, Romans 13 warns that government have the power of the sword in order so that evil men might fear them. It goes farther to proclaim that governments are Gods' servants, avenging Angels placed upon this Earth in order to bring wrath upon evil doers. The Gospel message id not to governments to not execute criminals, the message quite to the contrary, calls upon poeple to do what is right in order to avoid the wrath of government. To those who insist on being evil, God warns them. "Be very very aftraid."

  2. THE MEN OF SODOM TRIED TO RAPE ANGELS
    Posted On: 05/15/08 10:14:04 AMAge 64, OH
Dan, you are right that God hates divorce for the scriptures say just that. But read the account of Sodom and see what God did about homosexuality in Sodom. God never destroyed a whole area because of divorce. God always tells the complete and whole truth. He does not leave anything out that would change the story. God shows us that the homosexuals are so ashamed of their oral anal sex that they want to FORCE everyone to become homosexual. They even tried to force angels to take part in homosexual behavior. May the grace and mercy of the Lord Jesus be with you. Lou

  3. Moral Equivalence?
    Posted On: 05/15/08 05:24:44 AMAge 50, SD
Do you really believe that executing a mass murder and aborting an innocent baby is the same? Do you really believe that the killers of 3,000 people in the twin towers are deserving of the same protection as a pre-born child? Maybe you should think about this some more. Who instituted capital punishment for murder? Isn't that in the law God gave to Moses? hasn't that been a part of justice for thousands of years in various civilizations? And Dan, I'll be the last one to argue that divorce is good for the family, my parents did it and I hate divorce. The divorce rate among non-Christians is about the same as those inside the church. By the way, I didn't read anything about homosexuals in this article. Did I miss something?

We can start within the walls of our own Churches
Posted On: 05/14/08 09:16:33 AM Age 48, CA
No matter who does the survey, the results are always the same. There is no difference in the divorce, abortion, teen pregnancy, drug abuse, or the rate of any other depravity of this world between those who proclaim to be believers and those of the unbelievers. You would want to have someone in your Church arested for havng an abortion? Is making the government the Churches attack dog the answer? Are we to regulate the conduct of unbelievers or should we conver them through the power of the Spirit? Having failed to control such depravity within our own camp, we now set out to bomb opther nations into our own failures. By signing on to this gospel of bmbs & bullets while being unable to deal with our own failures, we have destroyed all credibility.

    Posted On: 05/16/08 10:56:08 PMAge 52, AZ
You would want to have someone in your Church arested for havng an abortion? Yes! I would want that Church person put to death for murdering! If God hates lies what do you think He thinks about murder. We as humans are so stupid, yet God knew that he needed to give us some instructions... First tell them not to murder... If they disobey and murder then kill them so that they won't kill another person again. The people will see what happened and also see the consequenses... and if they don't believe and murder anyway then the same thing will happen to them and soon enough we will have a very very strong deterrant to murder. This deterrant works even with no believers If a person goes to church is that a free ticket out of jail... out of hell? Where does it say in the Bible that if you go to church you can kill a person without penalty? Is making the government the Churches attack dog the answer? No... but we Christians established this country on the Bible. We Christians set up our government to serve God and His instructions. We "Christians" have gone to sleep... We have let unbelievers place our country on the road to hell. Wake up oh sleeper... Separation of Church and state meant that the Church had the power and the state was not to interfere with the work that the Church was commissioned by God to do. Wake up oh sleeper... Are we to regulate the conduct of unbelievers or should we convert them through the power of the Spirit? Yes and Yes. See above. Are we awake yet...?

    1. If you ever get it your way......
      Posted On: 05/19/08 05:55:38 PMAge 48, CA
I would admit that governments have the right if not duty ot enforce order. If the government ever would chose to enforce the Laws in Leviticus, the message of the Church should be "Do what is right and you will have nothing to fear". However, should the Church actually press for the government to become this strict? This is one of the interesting issues. The NT has little to say to governments. Other than Romans 13 warning the people that governments have the power of the sword and Jesus telling Pilate that he (And his empire) were only in authority for as long as God says so, there is no specific guidence on how governments should govern in the NT. If we are to look at the Islamic states (IF you can set aside your "Yhose evil Muslims for a moment) It is difficult to tell who is really holy. Does one behave only because he is afraid of thier morals police or is it due to his faith? The early Church was called upon to not take part in the depravities of this world even if it was not only permissable but fashionable and to not do so would invite scorn. So, Wy doesn't God allow the installation of your version of the Islamic mrals police? Probably because nobody has ever been saved by such an institution putting a gun to anybody's head. It is not for the Church to regulate the conduct of unbelievers but to bring more people into the fold.
