I don’t take issue with Mrs. Dobson’s message on behalf of the National Day of Prayer but rather her appearance on his show and her closing remark that affirmed the “work” of Dr. Schuller.
Surely the Dobsons and Focus on the Family do not agree with the heretical theology of Pastor Robert Schuller?
In the early part of 2008, H.B. London, who is Dr. Dobson’s cousin and vice president of outreach/pastoral ministries for FOTF spoke for the Re-thinkConference hosted at the Crystal Cathedral by Dr. Schuller and Emergent Pastor Erwin McManus. When London received tons of calls he reportedly put out a press release defending his speaking at the conference.
Are the Dobsons and Focus on the Family in agreement with the EmergentChurch? I can not believe they are so why are they showing up at their conferences and functions and giving them credibility?
For those that don’t know, the EmergentChurch, while hard to define, is largely made up of people that do not believe in the authority of Scripture, most or any of the essential Christian doctrines or absolute truth. Most within the EmergentChurch embrace Universalism and practice occult rituals such as yoga, transcendental meditation, and walking a labyrinth. They also tend to be very liberal in their social and political views. They are committed to a social gospel and stand in opposition to the real Gospel.
In February of 2007, Ryan Dobson, son of Dr. James and Shirely Dobson, wrote me an e-mail. In this e-mail he stated:
“I am a HUGE fan of Rob Bell. I think you really should look into his ministry before bashing him too. He is an exemplary man of God.”
Really? I have concluded through all my research that Emergent Pastor Rob Bell is embracing nothing more than universalism so how does that make him a man of God? Bell also just appeared with the Dalai Lama in Seattle for an interspiritual conference with a host of leaders that represent false religions. Use the search engine on the top left hand side of www.christianworldviewnetwork.com and read all the documented articles on Pastor Rob Bell and decide for yourself if he is a “man of God”.
Dr. Dobson has not hosted one program to expose the EmergentChurch, despite my private plea to Dr. Dobson, through his personal secretary, to join us in opposing the EmergentChurch. However, Mrs. Dobson now shows up with Emergent Pastor Robert Schuller?
All the evidence seems to point to the fact the Dobsons and Focus on the Family are deliberately embracing the EmergentChurch and giving them credibility by speaking at their conference and the church of one of its leaders. I can only assume they are doing this out of pragmatism and a lack of understanding and poor judgment.
If Dr. Dobson and Focus on the Family are NOT in agreement with the EmergentChurch then Dr. Dobson should release a letter stating that he does not agree with Emergent church leaders such as Dr. Robert Schuller and apologize for his wife’s appearance with Dr. Schuller on The Hour of Power and his VP’s appearance at Schuller’s conference.
Dr. Dobson should commit to hosting a series of programs on this fast growing cancer inside the church. Dr. Dobson could invite former EmergentChurch pioneer, Jason Carlson on his program to expose the heresy of this Trojan horse in our camp.
I really wish that Dr. Dobson and Mrs. Dobson would join me in my opposition of the EmergentChurch theology and not be praising one of its biggest leaders and promoters. At the conclusion of her interview with Dr. Robert Schuller, Mrs. Dobson says, “Thank you, thank you, thank you Dr. Schuller. God bless you and the good work you are doing here”
What? “God bless the good work you are doing here”? What good work is that, leading millions of people to hell with a false gospel? Really, I would like to know what good work she is talking about. Dr. Schuller promotes Universalism and I know the Dobsons do not agree with Universalism.
I don’t believe that Dr. Schuller even prays to the God of the Bible, through Jesus Christ. Schuller is promoting a false gospel and a false Jesus and therefore Shirley Dobson should not confuse the public by going to his church and acting like Schuller believes in the God and Jesus Christ of the Bible.
Here is a small collection of the things Dr. Shuller has been teaching that now Focus on the Family and the Dobsons have give credibility to whether they realize it or not.
In an interview with Christianity Today, published on Oct. 5, 1984, Robert Schuller was quoted as saying:
“I don’t think anything has been done in the name of Christ and under the banner of Christianity that has proven more destructive to human personality and, hence counterproductive to the evangelism enterprise than the often crude, uncouth and unchristian strategy of attempting to make people aware of their lost and sinful condition.”
In his book "Self-Esteem, the New Reformation," Schuller argues that we now have a far more enlightened understanding of what is really going on in our souls:
"Lack of self-love or self-esteem, here is a scientific, scriptural doctrine of original sin."
What Bible is he reading from? According to mine, the original sin of Adam and Eve was a choice of desiring what they – the self – wanted over what God desired for them. Adam and Eve succumbed to Satan's lie of human supremacy, which is to love self to the extent of seeing yourself as god. They also believed the favorite falsehood of humanism that they could be the ones to determine truth and to control their destinies. It was the desire to serve "self," not God, that led to disobedience and the original sin.
Later in his book, Schuller reveals the core of happy-talk teaching:
"Let us start with a theology of salvation that addresses itself at the outset to man's deepest need, the 'will to self worth.'"
The truth is man's deepest need is not "self worth" but forgiveness of sins through repentance and belief in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Unless we die to our own will and the desires of self-love and become alive to Christ and His will, there is no salvation.
When describing salvation, Jesus' words never sounded remotely like those of Robert Schuller. That belies the fact that the messages of Robert Schuller and Jesus Christ are in direct conflict. Jesus spoke about self-denial and dying to self, while Schuller promotes self-worship.
Robert Schuller, like many of today's liberal pastors, have a strong desire to avoid using the "S" word. In "Self-Esteem, The New Reformation," Schuller writes:
"Salvation is defined as rescue from shame to glory. It is salvation from guilt to pride, from fear to love, from distrust to faith, from hypocrisy to honesty."
"So lack of trust or a lack of self-worth is the central core of sin."
Uh … no. The central core of sin is disobedience toward God and our being in rebellion against His character and nature. The more we focus on self and self-worth, self-importance or our rights, the deeper our offending sin.
Schuller also writes:
"Jesus Christ employed a strategy of evangelism where he never called a person a 'sinner.' They were sinners, of course, but he never told them they were."
I repeat: What Bible is that? Jesus not only told His audience He was calling sinners to repentance, but He called some of them names even less flattering than "sinner." How would today's happy-talk audience like to be addressed as "vipers," "serpents" or "tombs"?
Why on earth would Mrs. Dobson appear on The Hour of Power and then ask God to bless “the good work” Schuller is doing? FOTF and the Dobson’s have nothing to gain by cooperating with Schuller, but they do have their credibility to lose with discerning, conservative, Bible-Believing Christians.
I plead with Dr. Dobson and Mrs. Dobson not to be part of the elect that will be deceived in the last days by false teaching as the Bible says will occur.

The Dobson report is a shocker. However, in the US today the local church appears to be on a slippery slope. My son has joined one these well known ECs and it breaks my heart. He was raised differently and was a strong Bible student and believer. He was swayed by the charisma and pseudo Bible intellectual scholars. So don't assume parents that your Christian sons and daughters are safe from the apostate church. Would you please give a biblical, side by side comparison of the EC and Biblical Evangelical view with scripture notations. Many believers today do not know or understand what is going on and the differences of the EC. This would be of great value rather than narritive opinions. Thank you for shedding light on this issue. Click here to reply to this post

Why not call these false churches by their proper name rather than cave in to their politically correct name? They are Apostate" churches and because of their rejection of the true Christ I have no problem calling them cults.
"Emergent" has a positive conotation that they do not deserve. Click here to reply to this post

Dobson has been drifting into the world for quite a while. He has said and done many fine things, but drifting toward Emergent is extremely dangerous. The question is simple: What must one do to be Saved? Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ!
The praises of men are intoxicating. I fear he is succumbing to marketing and hype. And probably to a decline in revenue. Click here to reply to this post

I have heard Dr. Dobson personally give an invitation to Christ. He also has said over and over again that he is not a reverend, he is a psychologist. He promotes living a life pleasing to God. His perspectives on self-esteem are Biblical. He understands our greatest need is to know God. There are serious situations going on in the lives of many and he has good Biblical, sound advice. I am not suprised by Dobson's wife doing this at all. You haven't been paying attention. Dobson wants the respect of the World and he plays Christian when he has a Christian audience and a Pychologist when he has a Worldly audience. I never trust a christian like that. Alan Keyes is the same way, Politician when with the World. You will never get Dobson to renounce anything that is even close to "christianity". He is part of the Ecumenical movement and like the Pope he doesn't apologize. Click here to reply to this post

For everybody who agrees with Brannon about this issue, I would ask that you contact FOF, with your concerns and tell everybody you know to do the same! If hundreds of people write, call, or email FOF with these concerns and let them know that they won't support a ministry going down this path, they may turn away!!!! Click here to reply to this post
Emergent Church & Dr. Dobson

Until a few months ago I had never heard of the "Emergen Church" and I have been a minister for 43 years, and have attended Worlview Weekend at Branson. I am opposed to any group that dilutes the gospel message against sin, the primacy of preaching repentance and salvation through faith in the atonement that Christ made for us.
However, I think you are resorting to "guilt by association" which I do not think is Biblical. You are saying that Jesus ate with sinners, oh, I mean that Dr. Dobson associated with sinners. He has stood for the truth of the Bible for years and as far as I can tell, he still does so. Would you want his wife to thank Dr. S for the bad work he has done? No, she was just being polite, and you took execption to it.
Thanks for all your good work. I will still read your messages and attend the Weekend when I can. Even though I disagree with you on this item. Click here to reply to this post

I have been a faithful listener and supporter of Dr. Dobson and Focus on the family for close to 25 years. I have several of his books and two wonderful nearly grown children. I believe he has put his whole life and heart into helping families through life's struggles biblically. The values he teaches are Biblically sound. He has done more for America and many parts of the world through his ministry than any other ministry that I can think of. I know families in Germany that are thankful for his enouragement in raising families. He also fights endlessly to promote Biblical principles in society such as marriage between a man and woman and has saved many babies through his work in promoting prolife. Because of his ministry my family sees the importance of being involved in community. He has helped launch Moms-In-Touch, homeschool, Pregnancy Crisis Centers and countless other opportunities. I don't believe there is any evil agenda in anything he does. He only wants to further the gospel through the gifts God has given him. Click here to reply to this post

In all of your post I don't see you mentioning all the souls that have been saved. I agree he has done a lot of good for family values in this country and world but doing good isn't enough. We as followers of CHRIST should be spreading the gospel of sin - repentance - faith in Jesus Christ. Who cares who marries who and who is murdered in the womb if they die in their sins. Those things are important but can't be the only things we focus on. Click here to reply to this post

The pastor of the church I sometimes attend, has adopted and adapted many of the seeker friendly/emergent "church" ideas. He thinks some of the authors involved in these movements are "great." He calls some of them his "heroes" presently "in the faith." Sadly and concerned, I have lovingly confronted him about some of these heretical, antichrist individuals and the antichrist nature of these movements, he shrugs his shoulders and says that "not all of them are bad." As you stated in your piece, Dobson and associates lend credibility to this demonically inspired movement by associating with them publicly. Perhaps not all of the leaders involved in the movement are "bad" but they too, by association, are giving credibility to everyone in the movement. Sadly, most common believers get caught up, unawares I think, by movements such as these and it takes years of recovery (spiritual) to come out of these insidious, satanic movements. Some never recover and never return.
This movment needs a good, solid, balanced book to define the cliches of the movement, to expose those who are its spokesmen/women and to expose the evil underbelly and to then thrust the sword by revealing the truth of the Gospel.
This whole movement is diminishing the impact of the truth at a very crucial time in our nations history and in the history of the world. Sadly, when people turn away from God, they substitute for their emptiness, fabricated worship, pseudo faith, idolatrous images and false teaching to fill the void of the lost presence of the Living God. Confused

I am attending a church where the pastor and deacons have decided we will not go the way of the emerging church. But we consistently watch videos and bible studies featuring emerging church leaders such as Erwin McManus, Rob Bell, Rick Warren, and Bill Hybels just to name a few. We also have put in a coffee house in the kitchen and couch area for the youth No one talks about the Emerging movement and I have been afraid to ask. So it's kind of scary the secretive feelings going around. Especially when 3-4 families have left the church for this reason and no one discusses it or why they left. Click here to reply to this post

I am like many of you who are aware of the infiltration of the apostasy into our churches under the guise of Purpose or other Emergent authors. Our Pastors,in most cases, are unaware as they are to busy to investigate and are delighted with the prospect of a growing church. My approach is to take source quotes or articles by these authors and compare them to scripture in a letter to the Pastor and ask him to discuss my scriptural assessment. Then allow the Holy Spirit to work in his heart and keep your discussion with him focused on the Word. SO far , he has stopped using "The Message" and John Ortberg material. I am working on the Warren stuff. I have waited 5 months for a meeting, no response yet. This is hard to do, but we are to honor God and be watchmen on the wall. 2Jn 1:9-11 esp. 11.
