Giant Despair: Surely He Has Borne Our Griefs

Giant Despair: Surely He Has Borne Our Griefs

Jim Elliff

"Great thoughts of your sin alone will lead you to despair," said the beloved 19th Century London pastor, Charles Spurgeon. He ought to know. He had excruciating bouts with depression. "I know the borders of despair and the horrible brink of that gulf of darkness into which my feet have almost gone."

But read the quote again:

"Great thoughts of your sin alone will lead you to despair, but great thoughts of Christ will pilot you into a haven of peace. The weight of my sin presses down on me like a giant's foot would crush a worm, but oh, it is but a grain of dust to Him because He has borne that sin on the cross."

Despair, melancholy, depression, sadness, sorrow, regret—we all know something about this giant who goes by many names. And some face him to a degree almost beyond toleration. Often (but not always) the heaviness of sin is at the root of such despair.

We are no match for such a giant as the relentless memory of foolish disobedience.

As believers who still sin, we know this:

·         Our sin is an awful crime against the One who loves us the most.

·         Our sin makes us feel worthless and defeated.

·         Our sin may create tension, distrust, and alienation to some degree with others, even if it does so merely because of our mental preoccupation with it.

·         Continual meditation on our sin may debilitate us way beyond the actual sin itself. We can give sin a second life by letting it destroy all our joy and godly ambition. Even after repentance, we allow the back side of the hurricane of sin to blow prevailing winds of despair over us.

·         Sometimes we wallow in the memory of our sin as a way to try to pay for it ourselves.

It is that last issue that is the most unappreciated by God because it implies there is something inadequate in Christ's work on the cross, as if He did not pay for sins en toto.

As a true believer, what should you do if Giant Despair is bludgeoning you with former sins?

Be sure you have repented of that sin. Repentance is hating what you once loved, and rejecting what you once craved. It is a change of mind that affects behavior. The believer lives in the world of repentance. "The sorrow which comes from God," said the apostle Paul, "produces repentance, without regret, leading to salvation [deliverance]; but the sorrow of the world leads to death." (2 Cor. 7:10)

Act on the necessary correctives—especially asking forgiveness or making restitution to the person(s) you have sinned against. Generally our admission of our sin should be as wide as the sphere of the sin itself. If it is between you and one other, go to that person, admit your sin, and ask for forgiveness. If it is between you and a group, go to the group. If it is between you and God, go to God alone.

Have "great thoughts of Christ." This is what Spurgeon learned-and practiced! Christ has already taken the punishment of that sin for you. Have enough sorrow to be sick of the sin, but not so much sorrow as to make nothing of what Christ has done on the cross. When you are convinced enough to despise it, then sorrow has done its work. Throw off nagging thoughts and go on.

Christian, God does not appreciate us acting as though Christ did not die. Your sin demands a fresh application of faith, a resting on this solid truth. Believe what He told you about the effect of Christ's death for your sins. Have "great thoughts of Christ." In Christ, you are as forgiven as you can be!

Your sin "is but a grain of dust to Him because He has borne that sin on the cross."

"Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows . . ." (Isa. 53:4)

Penance

If you feel Corporal and Capital Punishment are very much needed, then how could you possibly reject the Catholic idea of Penance for sins committed. It is the same principle and idea.

No majority vote or no committee can overturn any of God's laws. Any government that wants to be just has to base it's laws on the laws of God. The catholic church rules of penance has nothing to do with God's laws, but is based on the ideas of men. Lou

Punishment
Posted On: 04/29/08 11:27:43 AM Age 46, AL
Christ has already taken the punishment of that sin for you._________________ Not exactly true. If that was absolutely true, then we would not need corporal punishment or capital punishment.___________ Let's say that someone has been molesting your children in your church. A few years later the culprit walks in your church and makes an act of repention and confession before everyone and asks God and everyone present to forgive him and that he is truely sorry. WHAT DO YOU DO? Forgive him as Jesus did in it's entirety? Or do you pick up your cell phone and call 911 because you believe he deserves punishment?

As you very well know our actions in this life have consequences both here in this life and in the after-life. Christ came to save us from the penalty of our sins being ultimate death, the second death in the lake of fire. In fact Scripture even says that Christ didn't come for us to live in health wealth and prosperity where there are no consequences even for our wrong doing. Corporeal punishment and capital punishment are necessary to keep a nation from collapsing. If rape, murder, child molestation, and treason etc. go unpunished as a nation it would turn into anarchy. Rules are there to keep us safe not to hurt us. If death is the punishment for a certain crime that crime would be taken seriously and crime rates would go down. With the attempt to abolish capital punishment crime rate will rise because people see that there are no consequences in this life for there actions which may lead them to believe there are no eternal consequences. With corporeal punishment starting at home, children are taught what is right and wrong and if they listen (which they are more inclined to do so when the punishment hurts a bit--granted I am in no way supporting child abuse but a slap on the hind parts teaches a lesson that while one is young makes an impact and teaches respect) they will be inclined to follow governing authority. That's why the Bible is so important in this pluralistic society. It teaches discipline while teaching grace... now if parents can get that from Christ surely they can teach that to their children. That's what love is. Not beating someone but helping someone learn for their own good, and as a child I remember the lessons I learned because of corporeal punishment used in a loving way. Praise the Lord may He always get the glory. Amen.

Scripture tells us that Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law (Gal. 3:13), and that curse is certainly eternal death. This does not free anyone from physical death however. That is why God gave laws regarding capital punishment. Unpunished transgression (sin) breeds more transgression. Sin destroys families, communities and nations. That is why in God's Word there are no instructions for prisons. There are forms of restitution and manners of capital punishment. There are also certain minimum standards that must be met in order to pass a death sentence. Two or three reliable eye-witnesses, representation and a hearing before the court that rules by God's Law exclusively. And the witnesses are to cast the first stone too. Scripture tells us that God's work, ways, knowledge, and Law is perfect. However, no nation on earth subscribes to God's instruction in justice and just judgment. Many laws are certainly based upon His standards, but the laws regarding capital punishment in the US, and the laws regarding capital punishment in Scripture are not "apples to apples." If God's Law is perfect, then it is also just and merciful. Deut 32:4 - The Rock, his Work is perfect; For all his Ways are justice: A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, Just and right is He. 2Sam 22:31 - As for God, His Way is perfect: The Word of Jehovah is tried; He is a shield unto all them that take refuge in him. Job 37:16 - Dost thou know the balancings of the clouds, The wondrous works of him who is perfect in knowledge? Psalm 19:7 - The Law of Jehovah is perfect, restoring the soul: The testimony of Jehovah is sure, making wise the simple. Jesus instructs His disciples to abide accordingly, Matt 5:48 - Ye therefore shall be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect. A tall order for sure. Yet one day God's Anointed One will reign with perfect justice, by His Father's perfect Word. Rev 19:11 - And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war. John 5:30 - I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

This proves the position regarding the efficacy of suffering. Is there something lacking in Christ's sufferings? Of course not. But because Jesus loves us so much, He allows us to participate in His redemptive suffering by leaving room in His mystical body for our own suffering. Our suffering, united with our Lord's suffering, furthers the work of His redemption.

What an awesome thought that the God we turned against and were at war with crushed His Son for us while we were still God-hating, repulsive rebels. All glory to Jesus, begotten of God, the great I Am is He. Creator, sustainer but wonder of all, the Lamb of calvary!
