What is Black Liberation Theology?

What is Black Liberation Theology?

By Jan Markell

www.olivetreeviews.org

For the last several weeks the news has been replete with stories about Barack Obama’s pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright. You would have to see the news clips to grasp the extremity of his views and intensity of his words. While America is not perfect, to see her cursed in a church pulpit has been troubling, disheartening, and even sickening.

Barack Obama sat under this for 22 years and he wants to have the most powerful position in the entire world: President of the United States. But he didn’t get gospel preaching under Wright—he got instruction that revolves around a belief system called Black Liberation Theology.  So what is that?

The most prominent leader of Black Liberation Theology is Rev. James Cone whose 1969 book Black Liberation and Black Power was hugely influential in disseminating the beliefs of this movement. Those who have examined it suggest that the belief system of Rev. Jeremiah Wright of Trinity United Church of Christ mirrors those of Cone: Jesus is black, Marxism can aid in a true understanding of the Gospels, and the white church in America is evil or, some might even say, is the Antichrist.

Cone argued that the white church and white theologians had all failed in their duties to uphold biblical principles of helping the poor and marginalized of society. Indeed, in Cone’s view, Christians had become actively complicit in making the lives of others worse.  Because of this, it was no longer acceptable to leave the interpretation of the Bible to white Christians.

Black Liberation Theology is dangerous, unscriptural and misrepresents “white efforts” to help the poor.  The fact is, most humanitarian agencies have white leadership and white Christians support the organizations. But Cone didn’t stop with just whites: He also criticized middle-class black churches.  He felt all black churches should speak out as Rev. Wright has been doing for decades.

Now The Washington Times has come out with information to make the scenario even worse. They state in their April 2, 2008 issue, “The church where Sen. Barack Obama has worshipped for two decades publicly declares that its ministry is founded on a 1960s book that espouses ‘the destruction of the white enemy.’ They quote Cone as saying, ‘What we need is the divine love as expressed in black power, which is the power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by any means at their disposal. Unless God is participating in this holy activity, we must reject His love.”

This is bizarre, yet a spokesman for Obama says, “It’s absurd to suggest that Obama or anyone should be held responsible for every quote in every book read by a member of their church.”

Wait a minute! We aren’t only dealing with a quote or a book! We’re talking about a candidate for President of the United States who has remained in a congregation for 22 years that appears to espouse some of the principles above. To have anything to do with Black Liberation Theology is to identify with hard-core Socialism and possibly even Marxism. It comes out of their own mouths.

Every serious church attendee looks into the belief system for the church they choose to attend—as I have done several times—because every church has a statement of faith. Even Trinity United Church of Christ is bold about their statement of faith and it is easily accessible.

Where is the outrage that over many years such a fury flourishes in America as Black Liberation Theology?  If one looks carefully at it, the principles are almost that of a jihadist!  This goes well beyond the antics of the “religious left” and makes them look like moderates—which, by comparison, they are.

Pray for our churches today. Whether they are caught up in wrong theology or dangerous theology, God has not forgotten them nor should we. America will only be as strong as her churches are strong.

Every one knows there is prejdice, probably in all races
Posted On: 04/06/08 04:21:00 PM Age 62, IL
This week end we had a ladies conference at our church. The speaker was a black sister in the Lord. It was one of the best conferences I have ever veen to. I wish she could move here and be part of our church, her husband preached our morning message and again it was one of the best I have ever heard. They both know their bible well but more than that they truly know the God of the bible up close and personaly, that came across loud and clear and we were All blessed by God through them. There are many many solid bible believing christians in this country who truly love the lord with all of their harts, both black and white and all other raceses. We also know there are people who are full of hate and that makes it hard to believe thy know Christ. 1st John 4:20 says If a man say, I love God and hate his brother he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whome he hath not seen? We all know God has an agenda, He is bringing this earth age to a close. He said in the last days it will get worse and worse. We do not know who He will place on the scene to bring this about but that is what He does, read your word. We do not know every little detail but we surly know we are definitely coming to the one world government which I believe all of our candidates are eager to see. So let all of us that truly know and love our Savior try to act like it. J.P.

Why do so many christian's seem to keep missing the truth. Not a one of us is black or white. We are all brown, some darker some lighter. Don't believe me, find the darkest colored person you know or a picture of someone and put them against a black background, then try the same with the lightests. Still sounds funny to ya try googling (not sure about the spelling) mellanoma. If your a true christian and study your bible then you should know we all are of the same race...mankind, when is everone going to grow up a stop descering skin color as who's right and who's beter. God Bless everyone.

Blacks in America are free
Posted On: 04/04/08 04:35:32 PM Age 75, TX
They may not know it because nobody taught them that every human being in America is free.If so, what is black liberation movement? Any body in America can be what they want to be, if they work hard to get it. Govt. handouts are not liberation,it is enslaving the people.Time to wake up and catch up.

Black Theology and Black Power
Posted On: 04/04/08 10:49:20 AM Age 45, ID
Can you give us pages numbers for where James Cone says, "Jesus is black [and] Marxism can aid in a true understanding of the Gospels"? I have my copy of Cone's book ready to look these pages up. I wrote an analysis of Cone's book in graduate school, and while I had several theological criticisms--mainly that Cone's understanding of human depravity does not go far enough--I am fairly certain that Cone does not say in that book that Jesus is black nor that Marxism gives any understanding at all of the gospel. In fact, I cannot find where he mentions Marx at all. Be accurate.

Way To Go Church

The Church In America for all the years of slavery and all the years of segregation, Sat on their tails and actually practiced segregation. Now They pay the price. Black people do not trust the church. So They make up their own religion. They sit on their tails for the sins of homo sexuality and abortion also. Most churches believe they just mind their own business and all will be alright. Wrong

Black Theology??
Posted On: 04/03/08 03:45:41 PM Age 67, CA
Your view regarding what you call"Black Theology" is so contradindicated in the furtherance of the Christian Theological doctrine to all people who have studied the Chrsitian Bible and have studied the history of America and also taking into account how the History of America has been so tainted by revisionists and those who have refused to check things out by using common sense research. As long as there are people like that person who wrote on this subject in this newsletter continues to spread their very narrow and perverted views, refusing to ackowlege the truths of American history and the truths of Church History , will go on to prove that there still existsaana aliment of fear of the African American race. In other words, I am speaking directly to racism so deeply inbedded into the bone marrow of some people that they no longer can recogonize in themselves via the opninions they share with other Christians. God's will for us is to become more like Jesus Christ. The kind of persepctive sharedd in your article is extremely UNGODLY! Take heed my brother of the fact that your views divide further divede Christians. Yes to our disgrace, and our Churches are very white. This is to the shame of what God intended and tends to widen the gape betweenGod's people. This is called Exclusionary THEOLOGY. OUR LORD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST DID NOT TEACH THIS. So where do you thnk this Exclusionary Theology comes from? You check that out my dear brother. You should be dedicated to bringing the world view contrasted with the Words of our Lord and Savioe. I look forward to hearing from you. In cruso spero. Joanne Kuhn.

  1. THERE ARE BOTH BLACK AND WHITE RACIST
    Posted On: 04/04/08 11:14:58 PMAge 64, OH
I read this article and did not see one hint that she was racist or excluded anyone. She spoke AGAINST racism. Obama's church is RACIST. Obama's pastor speaks against people that he does not even know and he has not even met, just because of the color of their skin, white. THAT IS RACISM. If you think racism can only be against black people then that in itself would make you a racist. Lou

Joanne: I'm sure I speak for others as well, but I don't understand your post. You say "The kind of persepctive shared in your article is extremely UNGODLY!" yet, this kind of perspective is what Barack's pastor is preaching. So is your issue with him for preaching it, or with Jan for writing about it? If with J. Wright, then you should condemn him for his bigotry, racism, and false doctrine. If your beef is with Jan for writing about it, then you're confused. You are probably the type of person who attacks your doctor for telling you of an illness, rather than attacking the illness. John

Lady from CaI. not only his pastor but his other associations and comments
Posted On: 04/03/08 03:05:06 PM Age 33, OK
He sides with the Pal. causes in the past and gave to many and we know the murder and weaponry they've done to the Jews past 10yrs more. Barak told one person after the primaries and his win he would speak more about Pal. cause. He said he would continue in this false peace talk like Bush is doing as have the other two canidates. Anti-Likud is not anti-Israel he said. In questions about his faith the man said he doesn't believe in hell. Isn't sure he's going to heaven or not. This man is definitely not a Christian and would side against the Jews in giving their land away if that doesn't put up a red flag as a Christian to you. Mccain,Hillary, and Barak are members of that trade global elitist group and that scares me. Read comments Israel National Radio about Barak's other associations not too American, the man won't even pledge alliegence to our flag? Open up your scriptures and read what the prophets said is to come. Don't always believe what they say to your face but the fruit of their doings, and what they say behind your back.

all the colors
Posted On: 04/03/08 02:43:48 PM Age 54, KS
Remember the little song "red, and yellow, black and white, all are precious in his sight"? God made all humans in "HIS" image. Why do we have to be so ridiculous about the color of a person's skin? skin color should have nothing to do with who we are. Many of us are mixed race, SO WHAT! I don't care if someone is green with purple poka dots. They are a creation of God Almighty. We are all equal on the court in God's eyes. We have one choice to make and that is to choose to accept the free gift of salvation offered to us through the death, burial, and resurection of our Lord Jesus Christ!! Nothing else matters on judgement day! I'm sure Satan loves getting people all wrapped up in issues of color and biggotry. Are you letting him win in your like or are you standing firm in Christ?

  1. It's called prejudice
    Posted On: 04/04/08 02:28:28 PMAge 47, MO
Friend: Your post got me thinking so excuse this rant. Just like calling pro-abortion pro-choice, It seems to me that as long as we call it racism, we take a defensive posture. The truth is that we are all prejudice about things. Blacks are prejudice against whites based on the hate of their parents just like Muslims against Jews. I am prejudice against paper bags when I choose plastic. I am prejudice against rap music because it offends me. I am not a racist but I won't hire a black man that acts like a gangster- call me prejudice- I'm proud of mine! All ethnic groups have been maligned in various cultures, all religions have been persecuted, women have been dealt a poor hand for ages, etc, etc. But guess what folks, that's life. If I were a black man, I couldn't imagine hiding behind hate for "whitey" for the wrongs done to people of my ethnicity hundreds of years ago. What a waste of life and we are responsible for ours. Let's live our lives with prejudice for evil and grace to all. John

The Black Struggle's roots
Posted On: 04/03/08 11:43:19 AM Age 47, MO
The wackiness of Black theology reminds me of a couple books I picked up in the slums by Prince A. Cuba, 1992, titled "Before Adam: The Original Man", and "Our Mecca is Harlem". These books, obvious by their titles, espouse the virtues of black and the struggle against the white man. They elevate Islam, crush the Jews, and speak of the mysterious Yacub. An interesting quote is "The Adam of the Bible was created by elohim. Elohim means in Hebrew "gods and goddesses." These gods and goddesses were the original Asiastic Black men and women." John

EITHER BLACK OR WHITE IS NOTHING
Posted On: 04/03/08 10:51:17 AM Age 64, OH
Any one who bothers to read the website of Obama's church can see that Obama's church is all for black and nothing but black and is also against all whites. They are even against blacks who have anything to do with any whites. This is worse than the KKK. The KKK did what they did because they had the power. But they KKK did not kill all blacks. These people want to kill all whites, the only reason they have not, is they are not in power. I DO NOT WANT A PRESIDENT WHO IS AGAINST BLACK PEOPLE - BUT I ALSO DO NOT WANT A PRESIDENT WHO IS AGAINST WHITE PEOPLE. I am sick and tired of hearing about black and white. I would like to go to a church, that if you read a sermon from that church, you would not be able to tell the color of their skin from the sermon. Look at the leaders of Obama's church: there was maybe 20 and not one was white. Lou

  1. Either black or white
    Posted On: 04/04/08 12:59:27 PMAge 69, AL
I believe that Obama was picked to run for the President of the U. S. from the very start, 22 years ago. I do not believe that he had never heard his pastor preach of hate for white people before and he knows exactly how Rev. Wright feels about white people and the world today and I believe they have plans to destroy the whites and any blacks that have anything to do with white people. Instead of preaching GOD's love for all and trying to get along, what is wrong with these people? Do they like to see the world like it is today with all the murders, dope, robbing and killing innocent people and people who have no regard for human life at all, going on?? I can't believe the world like it is today and to think there is a "preacher" wanting to more or less start a war between blacks and whites instead of making peace. People, we need to get down on our knees and pray for these people like we have never done before and pray that GOD will come into their hearts and touch them with his miraculous love and show them that they need to turn from their sins and trust the savior Jesus Christ. GOD bless everyone and GOD bless the United States of Amerida.
