How Would Jesus Spank a Child?

How Would Jesus Spank a Child?

Eric Holmberg

President – The Apologetics Group

…with a flexible switch made from an olive branch, across the fleshy part of the buttocks or upper thigh.

While this answer is only a semi-serious one − I would never presume to speak for the Lord when it comes to precisely how He would mete out His perfect justice – there is nothing facetious about the central truth behind it.  To suggest, as some have of late, that the Son of God would never use any form of corporal punishment to discipline a child is to present, as the Apostle Paul warned the Corinthians, “another Jesus.” (2 Cor. 11:3,4)  Such seems more and more to characterize our present time.

I am specifically referencing here a bill that is being considered by the Massachusetts’s legislature that would make it illegal for parents to spank their children.  One of the prime movers behind it is Dr. Teresa Whitehurst, a clinical psychologist, co-founder of Christ-Centered Christians for Nonviolent Parenting (CCNP) and the author of the book How Would Jesus Raise a Child? (Revell, 2007).  In both her testimony before the state house and in her writings she claims that Jesus did away with the harsh laws and sanctions of the Old Testament (where, of course, verses like “he who spares the rod hates his son” (Pro. 13:24) are found) and has ushered in an new era of peace, love and non-violence where spanking a child is wrong, even evil.

For example, she writes:

“The ministry of Jesus Christ initiated a new beginning for mankind and a higher law for human interaction, children included. ‘As I have loved you, love one another.’ (John 13:34) In Luke 17:2, Jesus taught that it would be better to ‘tie a millstone around your neck, and be cast into the sea, than to offend one of these little ones.’ Inflicting physical pain or threatening to do so, is not only unnecessary, but is contrary to the way Jesus treated people. By sparing the rod and guiding your child, you can help them mature into self-disciplined, spiritually centered men and women.”[1]

She also argues her position by not-so-subtly using the tragic tendency of our age to set the Old Testament against the New, suggesting that the older revelation was a harsh and “un-Christ-like” one and now that Jesus has come we can, and should, ignore the laws found in the Pentateuch.  She writes:

“The interpretation of certain Old Testament verses causes further confusion, namely verses that seem to advocate striking children, leaving parents feeling torn between the merciful teachings of Jesus and the harsh instruction that accompanied the Mosaic Law.”[2]

I don’t have time here to respond in depth to the many fallacies of her position, but here are just a few quick observations:

1. The Bible is clear that “all Scripture is God-breathed and profitable” for teaching.” (2 Tim. 3:16) To suggest that the Old Testament (the primary scriptures that Timothy would have had when Paul wrote this to him) is somehow “harsh” in sections and is to now be ignored is wrong to the point of being evil.  Marcion was among the first and most-famous advocates of this view back in the days of the early church and was roundly condemned as an arch-heretic.

2. The context of the famous “millstone” passage Dr. Whitehurst quotes from in Luke 17 is further amplified by the parallel passages in Matthew 18 and Mark 9.  Jesus was talking here about the temptation to sin and encourage sin in others.  It is a grotesque misapplication to apply this passage to loving parental disciple.  In fact, God’s word clearly states that the rod of discipline − which can include but is not limited to spanking when it is practiced in a loving, Biblical way − can help restrain the foolishness that is bound-up in the heart of a child. (Prov. 22:15) (There’s another rub: I’ll bet you a donut that the good doctor doesn’t believe that children are “born bad.” (Ps. 51:5)) By trying to deny parents a Biblically approved method of restraining sin and retraining a child to behave righteously, she may well be making herself a candidate for the very millstone she wants us to avoid.

3. There is no question that we should ever strive to follow in the footsteps of our Lord.  (1 Pet. 2:21)  But we also need to keep in mind that Jesus did not pop into existence in a manger in Bethlehem and then jump off the blueprint He left for us when He ascended into heaven.  Our great triune God (and let us never pit One against Another) is the same “yesterday, today and forever.” (Heb. 3:18)  And how does He wield the rod as He shepherds His sheep on their journey to the true green pastures of the New Jerusalem? (Ps. 23)

Ask Korah and company as they met with Him in the nascent promised land. (Num. 16)  Inquire of Israel after the umpteenth time that God sent a “polished sword” against them (Eze. 21), using any number of pagan armies to bring death, captivity and suffering in such magnitude that people’s heart melted and their ears quivered. (Eze. 21:8-15; 2 Kin. 21:12)  Prefer the New Testament?  What was the one thing the Bible records that Jesus made by hand? (John 2:15) A whip…which He then proceeded to use on the backs of people who had defiled His Father’s house.  (Take that Dr. Whitehurst!) Check out Ananias and Sapphira as they worshipped in the “church of their choice.” (Acts 5:1-11)  Or ask the citizens of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. as Jesus’ prophecy in Matthew 24:1-2 was fulfilled.

The fact is that our great God (of Whom Jesus is the eternal Son) has, does, and until the scroll of this present age/cosmos is rolled up, always will wield the rod of His chastisement in ways that result in untold human pain and suffering.  Our “precious moments” theology may want to ignore or even deny this, perhaps blaming all the bad stuff on the devil (talk to Job about that), but there is no way to biblically deny it: our Great Shepherd’s first choice is the staff.  But when sheep rebel, He loves them enough − and the Bride that they will become − to break out the rod.

And so should we.

[1] “The Nonviolent Christian Parent,” http://www.nospank.net/ncp.pdf.   Technically Dr. Whitehurst co-wrote this with two other colleagues.

[2] Ibid.  Here we have a re-hash of the second century heretic, Marcion’s, worldview: that the god of the Old Testament was not the true God but rather that the true and higher God had been revealed only with Jesus Christ.

CHILDREN NEED TO BE TOUCHED AND LOVED
Posted On: 04/11/08 08:05:40 AM Age 64, OH
The bottom line is this: Should the government or parents have authority over children. 1 - God gives the authority and responsibility of raising children to the parents and no one else. 2 - Who birthed the children, not the government but the parents. Even grandparents have NO authority over children for they did not birth them. 3 - No taxation without representation, or THE PERSON WITH THE RESPONSIBILITY ALSO HAS THE AUTHORITY. Is the government going to take the responsibility of taking care of children. Is it going to feed and cloth them. The parents have the responsibility and so also have the authority. We might not like or agree with the actions of some parents. But the parents are better suited to care for children than government. So the government should stay out of this business. 4 - The parents made sacrifice and endured pain to have the children, but the same children are a burden to the government. The parents will care for children much better than government. Government has a tendency to want to get rid of problems. Where most parents would give their own life for their child. 5 - Do we want the government, who has stolen money from the Social Security and can not even run a fund of money, in the business of taking care of children. Money is simple, children are complicated. 6 - Every child is different, and one has much different needs than another. Only the parents can give the individual attention needed by each child. 7 - A child is better off getting the individual attention from their mother and father, even if it is not the best kind of care, than to be cared for by an institution that can not LOVE or TOUCH or HUG. IT DOES NOT TAKE A VILLAGE, BUT A CHILD NEEDS A FATHER AND A MOTHER. Only one man and one woman can have a child and God made it that way for a reason. When a woman wants to have a child with no father it is lack of love for her future child and her own selfish desires that bring this rebellion against the way of the Lord God Almighty. Lou

...what Jesus did with that whip He made at the temple when He cleansed it from the moneychangers? Was He just making it to scare them? I kind of doubt it. You make a whip to use it, or you don't take the time to make it at all. I bet someone got hit that day.

The bottom line is..........
Posted On: 04/03/08 02:46:07 PM Age 48, CA
I have used physical discipline on my kids and will continue to do so if and when necessary. Those who claim this is evil have yet to show a viable alternative. The exaples I personally have seen produced some pretty violent, selfish, and defiant kids whose "Enlightened parents" answer to such behavior is to excuse it and blame others for not giving the kids what they want. In other words, thier kids have a right to be violent if others fail to please them.

And it all involves allowing your kids to be punks. Don't get them mad overt something they want, just give it to them to avoid conflict. Another "Alternative" is to spend hours begging and argueing when a simple stren "No!" noramlly suffices. AAs our kids are ever more killing thier parents, shooting up schools, engaging is sex, doing drugs etc. Cracking down on parents whome you believe are cruel is not the answer.

Your assessment of gentle discipline is ridiculous. You obviously haven't read about it or taken the time to visit the site goybparenting - b/c it's certainly not about giving in to children & letting them run all over you. You think the only way to discipline is spank? How uncreative is that.

GODS MERCY IS SOMETIMES SEVERE
Posted On: 04/03/08 09:43:30 AM Age 64, OH
1st of all the law of God allows a parent to spank a child. But we are not under the law but are to follow the Holy Spirit in all things. Some here want to follow a law of never spanking and some want to follow a law of spanking; both are wrong. The sons of God are those who walk in the Spirit (not the law). We should not decide to spank or not to spank, but follow the Holy Spirit. There are certain situations where physical force is the only way to life. If a child is about to walk off a cliff, and sure death, then surly physical force is the only way to prevent them from death it would be not only appropriate but it would be hateful not to use it. I have learned that the mercy of God is sometimes very SEVERE; But He always does what is best for me. Look how severe God was with Israel sometimes, But it was because God loved Israel. Lou

  1. Good Answer
    Posted On: 04/08/08 12:29:10 PMAge 39, MI
I think this answer is great. Walk in the spirit, not in a hard fast law. It is up to us to follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit in all things. I personally choose to follow the non-violent approach first. I do my best to reason with my child, explain consequences, allow her to learn on her own, and teach her instead of just preaching to her. But I do have to admit that despite my efforts, that doesn't always work. There are times that her actions will harm herself or others, and I just can't allow that to happen. That is when she gets a spanking. It's always on the butt, and always over clothing... nothing overly violent or evil. Just something to get her attention and let her know that what she is doing is very wrong. I believe this is love. Think of the life your child is going to live if they never experience discipline.

A shepherd who hit his sheep would soon find himself out of a job....
Posted On: 04/02/08 06:13:34 PM Age 25, GA
"But when sheep rebel, He loves them enough − and the Bride that they will become − to break out the rod. And so should we." Anyone who deals with animals knows that you cannot hit them and expect true obedience--only compliance at best. Therefore, why assume that a shepherd using a rod with his sheep would be using it to hit them?

  1. You obviously have never worked with animals
    Posted On: 04/03/08 09:20:14 AMAge 48, CA
The shepherds rod is a multi purpose tool. It has a hook with which to grap the animal and is also used to prod the animal in the direction one wishes it to go. While no Shepheard viciously beats his animals, the prodding they do would be condemmed as beating if you ever watched it being done.

Email response from NoSpank

I emailed NoSpank today and got this illuminating response... On Wed, 02 Apr 2008 17:47:15 +0100, Jordan Riak wrote: Sadism disguised as parenting, March 29, 2008 By Jordan Riak (Alamo, CA) - See all my reviews Religion and sadism have enjoyed a cozy relationship since the beginning of recorded history. Little seems to have changed. During the Inquisition, robed priests, clutching their gilt-edged bibles, sent heretics to a slow death on the rack to teach them respect for authority. And today, authors of so-called Christian parenting books instruct parents how to whip children into repentance and obedience. The first group never saw a heretic they didn't want to torture, and the second group never saw a child they didn't want to smack. Informed parents don't hit their children. They know the difference between love and cruelty. They are not lured by any amount of pious claptrap into purchasing books that have more to do with porn than parenting. Jordan Riak

    Posted On: 04/03/08 02:03:37 PMAge 61, KS
As I read the comments about this and many other topics on this site, I have to wonder. With all the things we've (humanity) done wrong over the centuries, how did it happen that we now have over 6 billion people living on the planet. And we live longer than ever before. Alas, we're bored and have to find ways to beat up on each other, in a figurative way that is. Somewhere between using no corporal punishment and beating the "living tar" out of our youngsters, lies the best way. Love is the answer for sure but sometimes it needs to be accompanied by a bit of a firm response to augment the love. If you have a strong voice, that may be enough.

  2. As kids are more rebellious then ever...
    Posted On: 04/03/08 09:24:35 AMAge 48, CA
As they use more drugs, have more sex, are more defiant of parents than any time in our history, as they join gangs and shoot up our schools, I doubt that the one probelem we need to work on the most is a aparent who gices his or her child an occasional swat on the rear. Those who claim they have a better way actually have the mosr violent disrespecful kids I have ever seen and worse, they then claim it is the worlds fault that thier kids are this way for not loving them enough.

Here's the deal
Posted On: 04/02/08 12:49:37 PM Age 47, MO
The problem with some of these responses is that people are advocating to do What Jesus would do (WWJD?). However, we are not called to do what Jesus would do, nor is it possible to do what Jesus would do. We are not God. We cannot perfectly discern situations or perfectly respond. Only Jesus knew what people were really thinking and responded with the sword of the truth that cut to the heart of the matter. We Christians are called to do what the HS would tell us to do. As Christians, this is to train up the child, to disipline, to nurture, and to teach them the real world so they can exist as adults. However, most parents are guilty for their immaturity, their divorce, their lack of involvement, their ???, and misunderstand love as being tolerant and emotional. Thus they think kids will grow up and be stable just because they are aging. Next thing we know we have young adults still living at home, engrosed in video games, and only work when they need money for entertainment. John

I couldn't agree with you more. You are right when you said that we can't do what Jesus would do because we are not God and are far from perfect. And for parents(or professionals for that matter) to think that children will turn out to be stable adults just because they are "growing up" is ridiculous. Thank you for posting your very logical opinion. It seems very obvious to me.

A good spanking
Posted On: 04/02/08 09:06:23 AM Age 61, KS
Most mammals use some type of corporal punishment to keep their "pups" in line. While we humans are so much more advanced in our thinking and actions (tongue firmly planted in cheek), we're really no different and occasionally need to do the same. I was "switched" as a child and somehow survived the ordeal. My Mom even hit me with a closed fist when I was a teenager. I certainly never committed that infraction again. I remember swatting one of my children on one occasion but I normally used a firm voice. They knew I meant business. I worry about states making too many laws governing how we raise our children. I also know that parents can go overboard with corporal punishment so there is a balance that needs to be decided. The balance of personal freedom and government intervention. The balance of love and occasional tough love. Today, my mother could have been jailed for the way she punished me but it would have been wrong to do so. I knew then and know now how much she cared about me. The love she gave her children far outweighed the rare but firm punishments. I don't think things were much different in Jesus time and I wouldn't be surprised if His Mom gave Him a swat or two during His youth. Wow! Spanking God! What a concept!

The simple answer is that Jesus was also fully human and probably even cried when He was an infant. Shucks, he probably even played outdoor games with friends. I'm sure he didn't quietly sit/lay there until he was an adult. Even simpler answer....Nothing was ever writen about His childhood so we don't know. In any case, I was having fun with the thought.

Spock -- Brats!
Posted On: 04/01/08 09:50:18 PM Age 44, TX
Dr. Spock very successfully convinced America, and many Christians, to not spank their children. But the Word of God says in Prov.13:24 'He who spares the rod hates his son, but he that loves him chastens him quickly.' God disciplines those He loves. So to discipline is to love your children. To not discipline, in God's eyes, is to hate your children. What was the fruit of Dr.Spocks' advice? Let's hear from his own words Dr. Spock is reported as saying near the end of his life, 'We've raised a bunch of brats!' Let God be true and every man a liar. ~We must rightly divide and obey God's Word! Lynn

  1. The Spanking Experiment Failed
    Posted On: 04/09/08 01:22:45 PMAge 57, CA
Since World War Two, parents have been told that spanking is bad and raises children to become violent. And so they refrained from spanking. Look around today and see the results of this experiment. It failed. Kids today are out of controled, spoiled, demanding, rude, disrespectful, disobedient to parents, covetous, highminded, without natural affection, lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God. Everything the Bible says about people - even most Christians - in the end times. And all because for the lack of spanking and the proper Biblical training up of children by parents.

Previously Spanked
Posted On: 04/01/08 06:19:34 PM Age 35, FL
When one touches a hot stove after they are told not to touch the stove because it is hot, they get burned...and it hurts. When I was a child, I was spanked several times. I was told not to do something and when I did, I was spanked. It hurt. I didn't enjoy it. Afterwards, my parents would explain to me that it also hurt them emotionally but, I broke the rules and had to suffer the consequences. Being spanked as a child was a result of me doing wrong and to this day, I think about my consequeces before making a decision. If spanked in the correct setting, children will learn from their mistakes. A child does not understand the logic of a conversation as much as a spank on the tush when they are in the middle of irrational behavior.
