Wanted: An Old-fashioned Church

Wanted: An Old-fashioned Church

church.jpgTo Whom it May Concern:

I’m looking for a good Christian church. I don’t want to sing songs off a wall, the same five notes, over and over and over and over again while I am lightheaded from standing so long. There’s a record of the hymns of God’s people that spans 2000 years. Why are we so arrogant as to think we don’t need those wonderful songs any longer? Have we gone through more suffering, more affliction, more pain for Jesus than those who wrote these enduring hymns? Does a semi-secular song writer in Nashville with a multi-million dollar music contract have more to say to us about God and the Christian life than the 17th-century hymn writer who lost four children and his wife during the 30 years War?

I don’t want to have my eardrums bashed in by the three kids in the “worship band” who can’t be bothered to bathe, shave, dress or comb their hair on Sunday morning. If it’s really all about the God that Scripture describes as ineffably holy, shouldn’t that be reflected in attitude and dress for those who serve in church music?

I don’t want a vampy “praise and worship” leader who is flaunting her wares at every male within view as she does her worship moves on “stage”. If we are to worship God in spirit and in truth, as Scripture tell us, than what’s all the flesh about? Can we no longer discern the difference?

I don’t want to see people in beach attire with their backsides peeping out of their shorts because they think that God isn’t worth their best efforts at dressing. “God doesn’t care about clothes, only man”, they say. But the real reason is that it’s just plain easier to cruise into church in jeans or whatever is still lying on the floor from the night before. Dressing up for worship of the Lord would cost them something, however little, and they don’t want to pay it.

I also don’t want to see all the variations on lovers’ back rubs where Chuck and Sue take turns massaging each other’s neck and shoulders during the sermon so everyone behind them is completely distracted. Behavior affects other people. Are Christians so self-absorbed that they never think about the people behind them trying to hear the message?

I don’t want to hear announcements during “worship” about the youth group pizza blast and laser tag event next Tuesday night, the need for grills for the upcoming church fun fest or jokes about how Bill burned the wieners last summer at the church picnic. Why can this not be put at the end after our “worship” is completed?

I don’t want Christian karaoke for “special music”. Screeching females trying to imitate their favorite pop stars belong at the local bar, not a house of prayer.

Let me tell you what I looking for in corporate worship of believers.

I’m looking for a spirit of reverence among God’s people, a sense that we have come to join in with the company of angels, archangels, and the church triumphant who gather before God’s throne in that never ending heavenly worship.

I’m looking for a service that is founded upon and completely focused on God and His Word. I want to begin the worship with an entrance Psalm, to be reminded that in worship we enter heaven’s gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise. I want to hear the name of God invoked at the beginning, opening the worship in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, without which Spirit, we worship in vain.

I need to confess my sins, receive the comforting assurance that God has forgiven me, and I want to corporately confess my faith with my fellows believers. I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our LORD…

I need to sing of God’s holiness, His attributes and His greatness through the hymns of the faith that have been handed down through the ages from the pens and the lips of those who have gone before us. Why? Because God is truly “Immortal, Invisible, God only Wise, in light inaccessible, hid from our eyes”. Because God is “Holy, Holy Holy,” our Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come. Because it is right and fitting that our souls should praise the King of Heaven. He is worthy of all our praise because He is “Lord, Enthroned in Heavenly Splendor”. To discard this canon of music of Christ’s church down through time is to turn our backs on our family in the faith. In 21st Century America, we truly do not know better than they.

I need to hear the Scriptures read out—as much of it as possible. Three Scripture lessons are hardly enough. How often has a passage of Scripture read out spoken to my heart about something? Why is Scripture so often limited to the text of a message, if it’s there at all now? The Old Testament Lesson. The New Testament Lesson. The Gospel Lesson. I need all the lessons that God’s holy Word can provide.

I need to hear the Scriptures preached from a man of God, who is a man of prayer and personal holiness and who takes seriously his office of under-shepherd. Why do I want preaching? Because faith comes by hearing, the Bible says, and hearing by God’s Word. I need conviction of the Holy Spirit in my own heart and life. I want to be reminded who God is and my duty before Him. I don’t want a pastor who spews vulgarities and crude talk to show how “real” he is, or who feeds on Hollywood so that the only thing that comes out of his mouth is foolishness in his pathetic attempts at cultural relevance. God’s Word is eternally relevant. I can tell where the pastor gets his life food from. It always, always shows. Any pastor who is not a man of the Word and of prayer is no pastor at all.

I want a pastor who prays for his sheep, who understands that we are in a spiritual battle, and that Satan hates us and will do anything he can to try to take our faith from us. I want elders who lead by example with their families. No family is ever perfect. That’s why we need the forgiveness of our Savior daily. But elders should be leading lives that are Christ-honoring in their marriages and in their leadership and training of their children. When the children of an elder are worldly and carnal and disrespectful, it is plain that they are not keeping their homes in order. This kind of leadership no church needs because how will the members learn how to run their own homes and families if no godly example is in view? We are sheep. We need leaders.

I want a time of serious prayer in church, seeking God for His help and wisdom in these dark times, for the needs of the congregation and for the witness of the fellowship in the community. As we kneel, we’re reminded of our utter helplessness without the Lord.

I want a benediction at the end of the worship, where the pastor tells us to go in peace, because we have been washed in the blood of the Lamb, have been forgiven for our sins, and have the joyful assurance that God is with us and will take care of us.

This kind of old-fashioned church might meet in a rented room, a home, a gymnasium, a new, modern building, a vine-covered, old brick traditional church, a little white frame building or anywhere else. It is not the location that matters, it is the content and focus of the worship, and the heart of the leaders of the church.

Outside of the corporate worship, I want a church that believes in evangelism and outreach. Doctrinal clubs that sit smugly complacent are actually mausoleums. Who wants to worship in a tomb? There is a world out there that needs the message of the Gospel. It is our responsibility to take it to them, and churches should facilitate and train members for this critical mission. Truly saved believers have a burning heart to share it with others. I want to be part of a church that has this burning heart. I want to be part of a church where the young people are not just going on mission trips because they get to have fun in cool places, but because they get to share with those who have never heard the truth that Jesus saves. Social work is fine, but the Gospel message of Jesus must be heard loud and clear in the midst of it.

If you know of such a church in my area, would you please contact me at the earliest convenience. I would be grateful.

Sincerely,

A Christian

There are many who crave the kind of church I have described in my letter. They are weary of the things that go on in churches today where the careless, thoughtless and vacuous man-centered services leave them empty and longing for real worship and real food. For those who have nothing resembling this in their area, pray whether God might ask you to begin such a fellowship. Reverence, God-centeredness, Scripture reading, prayer, Psalms, hymns, a message from the Word—these things can be done even in your living room with like-minded fellow believers.

To the many Disney-fied/emerging church refugees, you may need to consider this if you have exhausted other possibilities. Perhaps the church comes full circle today. What began in the homes of believers 2,000 years ago may return there as the corrupt institutional churches and denominations grow ever worse. May the Lord lead us all to worship Him in reverence and awe, in spirit and in Truth. He is worthy of all our praise, now and through eternal ages. Praise the Lord.

And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.

And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.

And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever.

–Revelation 5:11-14

Living in "I" Land
Posted On: 05/14/08 02:40:52 PM Age 61, ND
When I read, "Wanted: An Old-Fashioned Church", it reminded me of a message my husband Stan preached at a local church some time back now entitled, "Living in 'I' Land". The point of it was, not what do 'I' want but what does GOD want! Our lives are not about what 'I' want but about what God wants! In his message he portrayed a tropical island where a fire is raging on the other side of the island. A helicopter is hovering and a Man is warning everyone about the danger and telling them that He has come to rescue them. But no amount of pleading causes them to heed the call of the Rescuer. The people ignore Him because they don't "see" the danger they're in; they're "comfortable" living in 'I' Land...and they perish! He went on to explain that a lot of us Christians are living in "I" Land, also. (I sure know I am!) We want what we want without first consulting God about what He wants. I know the meeting of the church would be very different if "I" could have "my" way! For instance: I can't tell you how much I dislike the way communion is handled in most churches in this community. I hate running through lines, barely touching the elements and hurrying back to my seat so the next bunch can run through. I thought we were supposed to be in 'communion', with our Lord and others, sharing our meal together, at the same time, like we do any other meal. How can I concentrate on reflecting on the bread in my hand, His body torn and broken for me, if I have to wait my turn in line, only to quickly put it in my mouth and then quickly swallow the juice so the next group of people can hurriedly eat and drink theirs and leave just as quickly. I long to tenderly hold in my hand and remember His blood shed for me on that terrible cross. I want to shed some tears as I reflect on the cup of suffering I am holding in my hand. I want to feel the cup pulsing in my fingertips as I remember, "The life is in the blood", not only physical life but eternal life that comes from Jesus shedding His blood for me. I want to worship while holding those elements. Yes, I know, "I want"... But perhaps I can't have it "my way" because God has other plans for me during that time, especially in the churches where we are not allowed to commune with other believers because we are not members there. I gripe because even Judas was allowed to partake, even though Jesus had just told him he would betray Him! But then I find myself praying for those people standing in line, looking this way and that as they wait their turn. I am pretty confident many of them do not have a personal relationship with the Lord; so as I look at each one I pray for their salvation. And sometimes I even find myself weeping for them because they have no idea they are still lost in their sins! Perhaps we need to look for the 'good' in what we consider 'bad' circumstances that we find ourselves in while attending 'church'. Yes, we'd rather live in "I" Land, but maybe we should look and see what God is doing and join Him in His work! Carrie

A Good Old-Fashioned Church in Austin, TX
Posted On: 05/10/08 01:31:49 PM Age 43, TX
I attended this church since 2001 until just recently (long story...) and it meets most of the criteriae listed in the e-article. They wear modest apparel, (exceptions would be visitors and recent converts), sing meaningful songs (a mix of old and new) without sounding like a rock band; strive for holiness in their lives; the preaching is annointed, w/ a lot of reading from the Bible and put in context. The preacher has a law degree & is the best preacher I've ever heard (comparable to Chuck Missler). It's New Life UPC on Adelphi Lane, in N. Austin.

The Spitfire, the plane that saved us
Posted On: 05/01/08 02:36:58 PM Age 45, ENGLAND
We don't need the old hymns for the same reason as we don't need Spitfires any more. We respect the Spitfire as the plane which won the Battle of Britain and therefore saved Western Civilisation, and we respect the pilots who flew her. We keep some of them for show, and to remind us of our history. What we don't do is put them on the front line today. Instead we have Tornadoes, and the new Eurofighter. Why? Because they have learnt from the past and are so much more capable today. In the same way we respect the hymns of Charles Wesley which were state of the art once, and expressed God's grace in an amazing way. However, not many people speak fluent Wesley today. Charles took the latest tunes and fitted God glorifying words to them. He would expect us to be doing the same. To be true to our tradition is to sing new songs that honour God, not to keep on with the old ones. John Wesley rode a horse, but if he were around today, he'd be in a car.

  1. The Spitfire, The Plane That Saved Us

Over the years I have visited alot of churches as well as being a member of five of them. One of those five was a new church I helped to start. I can tell you that the "Old Hymns of The Faith" tend to get the congregation ready for the preaching of the word more than any other music. It seems to set the stage for God to speak to the people more than the contempary music or the so called Christian rock. Then the God honoring Preaching of His word has more depth and lasting meaning in the hearts of those who hear it. After all He said He chose the preaching of His word and not the singing to save those that are lost. Christianity is just different than anything else in this world. The conventional wisdom of mankind just doesn't work like man thinks it should. He said He is the same yesterday, today, and forever and He never changes. The problem is that there seems not to be anymore fear, honor, respect, love etc. for Almighty God. We had better search for that Old-fashioned Church instead of the Social-Gospel type that just tickles the ears and gives you the feeling you have done your duty by going to it.Lastly, we all should examine ourselves from God's point of view and not our own. Salvation is of God and not of man.

Church Reform
Posted On: 04/16/08 09:23:37 PM Age 57, WI
Also, many churches have removed or pushed to the side the alter tables. They are a place on earth that's a pattern of what's in heaven where we come before the Lord. Dump the fads, fire the hireling preachers, and drive the worship teams and all its high-tech clutter off the sanctuary platform-much like Jesus drove out the moneychanger merchants from the temple of His day. Lets get back to the Lord being the focal point in church much like 'lifting our eyes unto the hills' when an organ and piano were were the only instruments and were tucked away off the sides of the platform out of the limelight.

Contemporary Music Style Has Defiled The Church
Posted On: 04/16/08 08:34:05 PM Age 57, WI
Upon visiting a relatives church in Wisconsin, she gave me earplugs to wear durring the so called worship. Her son wears them as the band was deafening. This Assemblies of God church dwindled to 150 from being thousands of members and had to sell their mega-church campus. True story. I just won't go to a "contemporary" church anymore no matter how "Bible-based" is claims to be. It destroys intimacy with the Lord. Bring back inspiring pipe organs, theatre organs, grand pianos, violins, and the Word rich music of heaven!

No perfect Church---No perfect people
Posted On: 04/04/08 07:18:42 PM Age 73, FL
My husband and I like an old fashioned church with the old time gospel music that we can sing from a hymnal. You see at our age we cannot see the words or follow from a screen. We also get lost on the lines when they are repeated so many times we loose the count and when to proceed to next line, if there is one. We do not notice how people or dressed if we are ready for praise and worship. We, like so many Christians are hungry for the word, and eager to hear our pastor bring it to us in a way we can understand. It always helps our spirit to have the old fashioned hymns that tell a story, and more times than not are written about scripture, and prepare our hearts for the sermon and His word. I think so many times Churches have the praise and worship songs to entice young people, but in doing so the elderly have a problem with the loud musical instruments, and distored sound, that we do not even hear the words. I love young people, and want them to be encouraged, but is there a happy medium. I do not know the answer, however, I do know that this is a serious subject. We have decided to stay home and we can tune in to the station on T V that suits us best, but we do loose out on the fellowship, and the wonderful feeling of joining in as part of the church family. I pray always for God to lead us to understanding of it all, and to help us all to worship Him in all ways, and always.

"Holy Fire" - The Whole Truth, And Nothing But 'The Truth'
Posted On: 04/03/08 06:01:10 PM Age 57, OK
I have exactly what you say you are looking for. But are you sure you know exactly what it is you are asking for. Have you "counted the cost"....? The principles and the doctrine of Christ are not to be taken lightly by any Christian. Nor will they be, IF, they are indeed a blood bought possesion of The Most High God, born again BY The Word of God. The Church is perfect. The Holy Spirit who will lead us into all Truth, is perfect. But as soon as any human being steps inside that church building, they bring with with them their human weaknesses, their hypocricies, their human failures, their adulteries (Spiritual and otherwise) and all manner of the "works" of the flesh. But at least in here you will be taught (preached to) from the WORD as it is written, according to the lead of the Holy Spirit (it is Him alone who knows what is on the hearts of the members of the congregation, He knows their needs personally, and will, through the preaching of the WORD, by the prompting of the Holy Spirit, effectively touch the lives of those who welcome HIS intervention, and will guide them into hope, healing and restoration. ...."Not by power and not by might, but by my SPIRIT sayeth the LORD"...). The Spirit of The LORD Jesus Christ is a meek and quiet Spirit. So who is that spirit of that is demanding all the irreverant noise and leading the congregation in all the "bumping and grinding"? It may well be by the "lead of the spirit"....but which spirit? Christians know and yes we do indeed acknowledge the fact that there is a "counterfeit spirit" working all kinds of "counterfeit" signs and wonders in this apostate generation. We know that because The "unadulterated" WORD of God teaches it. Are we "old fashioned"? My answer to that question is a resounding YES! And yet we are as contemporary as this moment in time, after all it is THE WORD of GOD that teaches..."Jesus Christ, the SAME Yesterday, Today, and Forever'. He is relevant to Ages past, He is relevant for this present Age, and He is relevant for The Age of our coming eternity. Here then, is a WORD for that one or for those FEW, that will hearken to this letter.... Jeremiah 6:16-17 (scripture quote from the Beloved King James Bible) 16. Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein. 17. Also I set watchmen over you, saying, Hearken to the sound of the trumpet. But they said, We will not hearken. This then, would be for you, the clarion call of that trumpet. You said you were asking for the "old Paths"..."Ask and you shall receive"...I say again, do you know what it is you are asking for? I am supposing you do. But before you continue, consider... Matthew 7:13-23 (King James Bible) 13. Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14. Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. From a sister in Christ, who knows the "old Paths"....our righteousness is in Christ, not in our works.

  1. "Holy Fire" - The Whole Truth, And Nothing But 'The Truth' (Part 2)
    Posted On: 04/03/08 09:13:23 PMAge 57, OK
Okay, but what is the Church service itself like, you might ask. Space will not permit a lengthy description, so I will attempt just a couple highlites. No preprinted programs that restricts the free flow of the Holy Spirit. We sing the old Hymns, generally started by anyone that feels led to start a song ("singing in the Spirit with understanding"). There is time for prayer, any individual may kneel where they are sitting and pray, prayers that you know are in touch with the heart of God. After it seems no one else is going to pray, then a Minister steps up to the pulpit and opens his KJV Bible and begins to preach and teach from the Scriptures (as it is written) as The Holy Spirit directs and lays on his heart what he will "feed" the sheep. With the WORD of GOD going forth our ministry is never under bondage to a clock, but rather under the authority of The Word. Always lots of Scripture relevant to the subject, including the chain references, at times, rightly dividing the Word of Truth. After the Minister is finished there are more Hymns interspersed with personal testimony from individuals rising up from their seat and speaking of the graciousness The LORD has bestowed on their lives or upon their loved ones, lifting up the Name of Jesus, praising Him with the Glory and Honor due Him, in all humility with thanksgiving. There is no band, there is no "praise leader", there is nothing to prohibit the "lead of the Holy Spirit" to do things "His Way". All these things are done decently and in order. There is so much more beauty to all this than can be stated here. It would take a lifetime. Any Questions? From a Sister in Christ. God Bless You.

Whoa, slow down there.
Posted On: 04/03/08 12:06:16 PM Age 30, IL
This article started out well, but you are throwing the baby out with the bath water. I never liked singing words off a wall, instead of off a page with the notes on it. And I don't like churches that entirely reject old hymns. But our church would have to buy new hymnals every year to accomadate our growing numbers. Worship leaders should be MUSIC leaders since our whole lives are to worship God. And they should be modest and unflashy. Church leadership should set the bar for the behaviors and dress at church. Praise bands, the same. But you can't exclude people that don't fit your idea of the perfect pew-sitter. Christ came to seek and save that which was lost. If Mr. and Mrs. Smith have their arms around each other, maybe you should praise God there is a couple that loves each other. Maybe you should remember why YOU came to church--to worship God, not the idol of yourself as the perfect Christian. Maybe your real wish is that the Spirit of the Lord would move in America with real power, as in past times. "If My people who are called by My Name, will humble themselves and pray, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the children to the fathers, and I will heal their land."

Great Article,
Posted On: 03/25/08 06:04:34 PM Age 61, FL
This article is about attitude, but most of the folks who wrote a negative critique missed the point entirely. No surprize here, they are the problem in the modern church. I am offended when a female dresses provocatively and shows me what only her husband should see. Dressing like a slut is not proper attire for worshiping God. Yes I am saved and put up with the scruples of the weak as the scriptures say. I fully understand that a sinner can come as they are to the throne of grace but after a few years of supposidly being a Christian, they should feel a jab from Holy Spirit to clean up their act. What ever happened to not being a stumbling block for others?
