Getting to Know Barack Hussein Obama, Jr.

Getting to Know Barack Hussein Obama, Jr.

Author: J. Michael Sharman

Back in January, an email was forwarded on to me that said a whole lot of bad things about Barack Obama, clustered around the claim that: “Obama takes great care to conceal the fact that is a Muslim.”

At the end of February, another email was forwarded to me and a gazillion other people that exclaimed, “Barack Hussein Obama, a Muslim, wants to be our President? You have GOT to be kidding! Wake up America!”

So, I thought I would wake up and check it out.

Having checked it out, I can’t find any basis for a claim that Barack Obama is now a Muslim/Moslem/Islamic.

That does not mean, however, that we should stop looking into his religious, political, background, or the political implications of his religious affiliations.

Project VoteSmart is one of the most objective sources for candidate information, but unfortunately it does not provide in-depth biographical data. Among the short items of interest listed there are that Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on August 4, 1961 to Barack Hussein Obama, Sr. and Ann Dunham, both of whom are now deceased. He is married to Michelle, and they have two daughters, Malia and Sasha. He is a current member of Trinity United Church of Christ. His favorite book is Alex Haley’s book,“The Autobiography of Malcolm X”, the leader of the Nation of Islam  who was assassinated, supposedly, to make way for Louis Farakhan.[1]

The Biography Directory of the United States Congress drops Obama’s “Jr.” designation and says he: “obtained early education in Jakarta, Indonesia, and Hawaii; continued education at Occidental College, Los Angeles, Calif.; received a B.A. in 1983 from Columbia University, New York City; worked as a community organizer in Chicago, Ill.[2]

The Encyclopedia of World Biography puts a bit more flesh on those bare-bones details. The senior Obama was Kenyan, of the Luo ethnic group. His family in Africa disapproved of his marriage to a white American, and their marriage only lasted two years. The father and son saw each other only once again when Barrack was ten years old.[3]

Ann Dunham Obama then married an Indonesian who worked in the oil industry. The family moved to Jakarta, Indonesia when Barack was six. At ten years old, Barrack moved back to live with his maternal grandparents in Honolulu, Hawaii.[4]

The Asia Times Online states that the move was prompted because Ann’s new husband, Lolo Soetoro, had his student visa revoked in 1967.[5]

The Chicago Sun-Times writes that, “Soetoro worked for the Indonesian government and later a U.S. oil company before he and Obama's mother divorced in the late 1970s. Soetoro died of a liver ailment in 1987 at age 51.” The Sun-Times article concludes with Obama’s own description of his stepfather’s faith: “Like many Indonesians, Lolo followed a brand of Islam that could make room for the remnants of more ancient animist and Hindu faiths.”[6]

Obama’s half sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, who now lives in Honolulu told the Associated Press, “Our mom lived in many countries, shared many world views with us and yet the Midwest and Kansas were certainly still very present.”[7]

In the Midwest, Obama, says an article in the Baptist Press, has been an active member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago for more than two decades, which brings up a few other controversies.

First, the entire denomination is being investigated for a possible revocation of its 501(C)(3) status because of a political speech Obama made last year to its convention.[8]

Second, and more importantly, the congregation Obama belongs to describes itself all over its website: “Our roots in the Black religious experience and tradition are deep, lasting and permanent. We are an African people, and remain ‘true to our native land,’ the mother continent, the cradle of civilization.”[9] The creed that the church espouses is “The Black Value System”, the points of which are published on the Church website.[10]

Third, the in-house magazine published by the Obama’s church gave Louis Farrakhan its 2007 “Trumpeter Award” because he was, Obama’s pastor said, a man who “truly epitomized greatness.”[11]

Obama’s beliefs and background may not be Moslem, but the true facts still don’t read as being terribly inclusive or American to the rest of us.

We are supposed to vote for McCain? The only conservative stand the GOP front runner stands for is to continue our current gospel of bombs & bullets. He is liberal on just about every other issue and since I don't believe in this war to impose western godlessness upon the Islamic world my vote this November shall be to write in "None of the above". The right has been in power for nearly 8 years. The previous administrations policy of economic treason with China, the unsecured borders, reckless spending, even the sexual imorality continues unabated. The right has gone wrong and deserves to lose.

Barrack Obama
Posted On: 03/04/08 09:15:59 AM Age 61, MO
Here are some statements Obama made most recently that I quote from a newsclip: "Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) told a crowd at Hocking College in Nelsonville, Ohio, Sunday that he believes the Sermon on the Mount justifies his support for legal recognition of same-sex unions. He also told the crowd that his position in favor of legalized abortion does not make him "less Christian." "I don't think it [a same-sex union] should be called marriage, but I think that it is a legal right that they should have that is recognized by the state," said Obama. "If people find that controversial then I would just refer them to the Sermon on the Mount, which I think is, in my mind, for my faith, more central than an obscure passage in Romans." St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans condemns homosexual acts as unnatural and sinful. Obama's mention of the Sermon on the Mount in justifying legal recognition of same-sex unions may have been a reference to the Golden Rule: "Do to others what you would have them do to you." Or it may have been a reference to another famous line: "Do not judge, or you too will be judged." Sadly enough, from his exposure on the Oprah Winfrey show, Obama is attracting audiences like a rock star. He is very much a globalist at heart, and his voting record in the Senate is mostly unconstitutional. George Cancilla

enough !

This is nothing more than an atempt to paint the man as some kind of un-American minority. So what if his family background from other countries? Maybe that gives him a more universal image of man than our current president. That would be good idea as opposed to the "you are either with us or against us" self centered philosophy. Agree with us or we will kill you seems to be a lot of peoples mood today ! As to his church. I'm sure we could look at ever church and see things we don't like or agree with or have honored people we don't like. How many politians has Focus given money to that have been guilty of crimes. How about Mark Foley, Tom Delay, Jack Amhamof (sp). Whether you agree with Obama or not isn't the issue, why do we add this other personal stuff to the debate. You still have people thinking he is a Muslim because of stupid spam e-mails. This articles just adds to lies and rumors.

there are so many points that you bring up that are just factually wrong. I am a Christian CONSERVATIVE first, not republican or democratic. Obama is so far away from my values,it's as if he is on another planet. How can he consider himself a Christian but still support abortion? It doesn't matter to me what gender or color a candidate is,if they support the things I consider important, then they will get my vote. Sadly,NONE of the candidates left are close to my standard on all the important issues, abortion and family values. And obama is just scary to contemplate as the next president of the United states.

  2. OBAMA'S CHURCH IS RACIST
    Posted On: 03/05/08 11:19:09 AMAge 64, OH
You are the one who is guilty of gossip. The author clearly said, he did not find anything to the rumors that Obama was a Muslim. Yet you accuse him of spreading rumors. But it is a FACT that Obama WAS raised as a Muslim when a child. But the author points out that the pastor of the church that Obama CHOOSES to attend called Louis Farrakhan a hero. Louis Farrakhan is a hostile angry man filled with hate for anyone white. He is a Muslim. How can a Christian man look upon a man who leads people to hell as a hero. Did you read the statement of belief of Obama's church and the fact that they are faithful not to the US but mother Africa. How about the black principles that Obama's church say they follow. The Bible is not BLACK or WHITE. The colar of someones skin is hardly ever mentioned in the Bible. Read the website of this church and you will see every other word is BLACK. Obama's church is very clear in their statements that they support BLACK Chrsitians, and reach out to the BLACK community, they give to the BLACK people. I do not want a president who supports only the black people of the US but a president who is for ALL, no matter what color they are. Lou
