When pastors no longer shepherd God's people and the pulpits become playgrounds 4. When psychology replaces biblical discipleship 5. When men of God are flattered to become "late night talk show guests" on cultural and spiritual issues, but never once open up the Bible to develop their answers; or call the nation, other guests, or the talk show host to repentance by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone for salvation; they've simply become culturally acceptable biblical motivational speakers thinking that access to mainstream media means they are making an impact 6. When the vicar of Rome is acknowledged as the vicar of Christ 7. When sin is called sickness; when disobedience is called disease; and when adultery is called addiction 8. When money becomes a prerequisite for ministry by charging people for the gospel, worship, discipleship, counseling, evangelism, etc. 9. When we are liked by all people; when the world is not offended by the message we represent and flatters us for being "relevant and nice" 10. When the worship and glory of God is treated as entertainment 22. When the church bows the knee to the seminaries and surrenders her duty to train men for pastoral ministry; thinking that the academic schools of religious learning actually can make a pastor when all they can do is make students 23. When men personally profit from the sale of God's Word 24. When repentance from sin, justification by faith, the law, the active and passive obedience of Christ, penal substitutionary atonement, are no longer considered part of the gospel 25. When partnering with Romanism, Mormonism, Jehovah Witnesses, Church of Christ (Bostonian), Seventh Day Adventists, Islamic moralists, Atheists, Agnostics, etc., by divorcing the centrality of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ from their burden for social change, and therefore, indirectly legitimize them as being "morally sound and culturally chaste" by naive evangelical leaders who have forgotten their heritage, sold their spiritual birthright, and have abandoned sound doctrine for the sole purpose of establishing politically-correct alliances in order to try and turn back the tide of moral decay through cultural co-belligerence. 27. 31. When picketing sinners is more acceptable than loving sinners
32. When "God is my girlfriend" songs are considered expressions of biblical worship; and the use of secular music defines our praise
33. When the denial of the One Triune God of the Bible in three persons - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - coequal, coeternal and coexisting from all eternity is considered orthodox teaching
34. And when the certainty of hell, eternal judgment, divine wrath, and everlasting perdition is considered myth

I agree with this point to some extent; I believe that God can raise up a man to pastor a church from within the Body of Christ, especially a church that is characterized by strong discipleship and Biblical teaching. Where I disagree with this premise is that I have seen many mega-churches "grow" their own - and they have been grown and discipled in error without benefit of learning how to exegete the Bible other than under the tutelage of the existing pastor, if that. Basically, the person has "attended" faithfully, served as greeter, parking lot director and "led" a small group (i.e., used Rick Warren's books/tapes, etc.) long enough to be "raised" up. For some, I guess that's as "thoroughly equipped" as you can desire which is why the emergent church and other post-modern apostasies are having such a growth surge. That is not to say that the piece of paper from Bible college or seminary should be the standard by any means, but many churches today are doing poor jobs equipping their laymen, nevermind vocational workers. Holy Spirit needed for wisdom

Friend: Very good post and I applaud you for your insight. However, I would like to take it a step further. I think the seminaries are teaching bible, tradition, and near truths, in the name of their particular religious bent and forsaken the pure, simple, gospel truth. Indeed, we need to thoroughly know the truth (Christ) to quench the firery darts of the enemy, but this truth will only come by the HS. Knowing Christ is helped by Scripture, wise teachers, TIME, and prayer. Seminary may assist this but it mostly just checks their boxes leading to a diploma. John Click here to reply to this post

JESUS CHRIST IS THE ONLY FOUNDATION

Steve, very good and needed article. I would like to disagree with # 17 though. You say,When the foundation of our faith is no longer the scriptures.. the Devil applauds. The Holy Scriptures do not tell us that the scriptures are the foundation of our faith. Our faith is to be in The Lord Jesus Christ and no one or nothing else. Our faith comes from Jesus, and is in Jesus, and is for Jesus. The pharisees put their faith in the Holy Scriptures and were all lost. The Scriptures are good but they point to the Lord Jesus. As The scriptures tell us that the Word of God is the person of The Lord Jesus Christ. Nothing in all of creation compares to Jesus and should be called by His Name but Him. Paul tells us in Romans 10 that Faith comes from hearing and hearing from the Word of God. The only way a man can have true faith in Jesus is for God to reveal that Jesus is God to that man. The faith comes when the mans hears Jesus and not from being preached the Bible. If we preach the Bible then hopefully they will seek the Lord of mercy and "hear" His voice. We can not make them hear of course but the only way they can hear is for them to seek the Lord. What is the foundation but the Rock on which the church is built. This is made clear by what Jesus told Peter in Matt: 16And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
17And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
18And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. -- What is the Rock of which Jesus speaks of here. It is NOT Peter as the pope thinks. It is the fact that God revealed Himself to Peter. The revelation came from heaven and not from scripture or preaching. We can see that the faith that Peter had did not come from the scriptures but from heaven. Faith comes from hearing and hearing from The Word of God. Lou Click here to reply to this post

"For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ." (1 Corinthians 3:11). George Cancilla Click here to reply to this post
Actually No. If the foundation is Christ then it is self validating. Is it not? So then, the truth of Scripture is found in Christ. Scripture is a revelation of Christ, and if Scripture didn't reveal Him, and if Christ didn't fulfill the revelations, then they wouldn't be true. And, they are only true in as much as they are properly discerned by the HS to reflect Christ. Also, Scripture is not really needed as Christ said He will write the truth on our hearts. True, Scripture is helpful for teaching, reproof, and revelation, but Christ is also found in His creation, the cosmos, calamity, and all Truths. Hope this helps clear up your curt retort. JESUS IS THE SHEPARD

Steve, thanks for writing this article. But I disagree with # 3 on your list. You say, WHEN PASTORS NO LONGER SHEPARD GOD'S PEOPLE... That the Devil applauds. The Devil applauds when the pastors do shepard God's people. It is not the job of any man to shepard or lead the sheep. Jesus did NOT tell Peter to LEAD my sheep but Jesus told him to FEED my sheep. No man including a pastor should tell anyone to follow him. But the pastor should show them by example to follow Jesus. We are told to call no man teacher for we are to have only one teacher, Christ. The same is true of Shepard or even Pastor. We should call no man shepard or pastor or teacher. We are to have only one Teacher, Pastor, or Shepard, and that is the Lord Jesus Christ. Don't you agree. I am just saying we should even be careful as how we word what we say so some are not easily led into error. Lou Click here to reply to this post
Christ the Chief Cornerstone the Chief Shepherd

TRUE!!! Jesus Christ IS the Chief Cornerstone!
In so many churches, those who are weak, and not sold-out, crucified with Christ, it is no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me "Christians" are woowed into believing that Christianity is a spectator sport. The pastor is "The Man" and they and the other leaders are there to spoon feed the congregants. The Gospel is not taught clearly and concisely, but only LOVE LOVE LOVE from the Father (You're Okay, I'm Okay, We're ALL Okay!). NOT BIBLICAL!!!
No one is warned to flee from the wrath to come. I don't think anyone can go to Heaven until they have clearly understood the certainty of Hell, and repent for the forgiveness of their sins. Thus church goers are not "New Creatures, old things passed away, all things become new." Click here to reply to this post
True Love

"Love, love, love." Don't get me started brother, because you're singing my tune. God is the same yesterday, today, and always, yet He only saved 8 people thru the flood, where's the love? When Jesus saved Paul he told him he would suffer for His namesake;; show me the love! Jesus never told anyone he loved them- including His "holier tha thou" mother. (in Catholic theology). People used to flee sin and try to love one another, now people flee love and live a life of self gratification. Sin is glorified as self awareness and love is shunned as weakness. The anti-christ will seem to be a loving savior and loved by many, yet he is the devil. So brother, you are correct that love (as the world knows) is the path of destruction. True love is Christ and we would not know love without His Spirit. Good post. John Click here to reply to this post

So true!! This a byproduct of religious influence. Churches tell us how to climb the institutional ladder by doing ministry and gaining more and more influence. This leads to a works based salvation instead of grace. I'm not saying that it's intentional but it is a result. Pastors are not shepherding the flock to rely on Christ but to follow accepted church life. And heaven forbid that someone sings a different tune, aka: Chuck Colson, Lee Strobel, etc. John Click here to reply to this post
Outside of an abortion clinic. A very delicate tightrope for a believer. Love the sinner, but hate the sin. I wonder how many have pondered the sheer complexity of the House of Infanticide? A plethora of sin: Murder, lying, cheating, adultery, stealing... The total depravity of man on display at a theater near you! Blessings, Herb Click here to reply to this post
