Christian Fundamentalists Are Becoming Outcasts

Posted: 02/15/2008

I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
John 14:6

I am Christian fundamentalist. Meaning, for one, that I believe in the above declaration by Jesus Christ. This claim by Christ I believe to be absolute truth. For sure, when compared to other religious belief systems, this is an exclusionary statement.

It divides people. Either you subscribe to it, or you don’t. There is no in between. This is not a gray area. There are other quotes like this from Jesus found in the scripture. For instance in John 3:3 he says this: “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” In Luke 13:3 he said: “No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”

Christian fundamentalists like me take these words literally. Jesus wasn’t talking metaphorically. He wasn’t talking in parables, as he was apt to do. He meant what he said and said what he meant.

In the last couple of years there have been a plethora of books written about the “dangers” of Christian fundamentalism. Some have reached the best-seller list such, as “American Theocracy: The Peril and Politics of Radical Religion, Oil, and Borrowed Money in the 21st Century,” by Kevin Phillips; “Kingdom Coming: The Rise of Christian Nationalism,” by Michelle Goldberg; “American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War On America,” by Chris Hedges; “The Theocons: Secular America Under Siege,” Damon Linker; and, probably the world’s most famous atheist, Christopher Hitchens’ new book. “God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything.”

To give these folks their due, they are very intelligent thinkers. These authors, and many others like them, represent the intellectual power of what I call the secular left and they have significant influence in the world of academia, the mainstream national media, the arts and entertainment industry.

The common theme in these books and among the secular left is that people like Tim Wildmon are a clear and present danger to other Americans who do not agree with my fundamentalist Christian beliefs. The pejorative three words often used to describe us are: The Religious Right. In their view, people like me have a political agenda (some would say hidden) to take over the country and subject non-believers – through the power of the government – to our particular religious dogma. Often these people will say that we represent the Christian version of the Taliban.

Obviously, the idea of a group of people gaining control of government and using it to force others to obey their particular religious beliefs scares many Americans. It would scare me, if I thought it were a real possibility. Now there may be people and groups in this country who would like to do this, but trust me, none of the Christian fundamentalists I know have any desire to force their religious creeds on other Americans who chose to believe differently or who chose not to believe in God at all. Where I think these people who want others to believe that we are, in fact, plotting to take over America become intellectually dishonest is when they confuse the masses into accepting the idea that just because fundamentalist Christians are active and engaged in the political process for the purpose of championing what we see as biblical values – that somehow equals imposing a theocracy.

For instance, take one of the most divisive social issues of our time – abortion. Christian fundamentalists believe that human life begins at conception and should be protected by government. So what do we do? We work through the legal process and the political process to elect representatives who share this view. This is how the American process works. All we are doing is participating in the same way any other group advances their cause. This is not the same as attempting to force an atheist to confess John 14:6 or either he goes to jail.

If you are going to make the argument that religious people should be discredited or disqualified just because their religious beliefs motivate their political activity, then you would have say the American civil rights movement was a case of Christian minister Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., organizing to force government to impose a particular belief on America that all men are equal in the eyes of God. This was a movement that at its heart was religiously motivated.

We Christian fundamentalists – a shrinking number for sure – are becoming outcasts in American popular culture. To borrow from the Bible, we are becoming societal lepers. We are unwilling to go along with the idea that all roads lead to God, therefore we are labeled intolerant. We are unwilling to say that all lifestyles are morally equal, therefore we are bigots. We believe each person must repent of their sin and accept Jesus Christ as savior in order to go to heaven so we labeled fascists. It’s unfair, but it a reality. The secular leftists who subscribe to secular humanism and moral relativism will not tolerate Christian fundamentalism.

Now isn’t that an irony.

Syllogism 101

Logic comes of God. The Bible is illogical,i.e., is replete with contradictory statements. Ergo, the Bible is not of God.

Your secular reasoning is but folly unto God. Obviously you are not a believer of God's truth and even likely must believe you evolved from a tadpole. God's Word, the Holy Scriptures (Bible as many refer to it), is not one book but a compilation of 66 books, letters, poems and songs God-breathed into over 40 authors over a perios of 4,000 years. Nothing within the authorized Bible version can be factualy disputed (at least honestly) and all the prophesies have either come true and realized or a few remaining to be fulfilled when Jesus returns to set up the Kingdom of God on Earth for a 1,000 years. That said, your right of freedom to choose to believe what you may is also given to you by God.

Back to "Normal"?
Posted On: 02/18/08 09:08:06 AM Age 48, CA
"Outcast" is supposed to be the normal status of a believer. Does not the term "Holy" mean to be set apart? Different? The idea that an entire nation can be holy and thus, special is unBiblical. The Gospel is to individuals, not governments. In theory, if enough people with a nation are saved, you could have a "Nation of Christians" And thus, the conduct of the society should reflect that. "Christian nation" denotes something from the top down. Lets take abortion. In your "Christian nation", Abortion clinics are closed at the hands of SWAT Teams with crosses on their kevlar. In a "Nation of Christians" Abortion clinics close due to lack of demand for their services.

Threat vs. Personal Sovereignty
Posted On: 02/17/08 10:47:05 AM Age 57, CA
The "threat" we present is challenging their wrong ideas. They know they have no defense except to accuse or abuse. They accuse us of challenging their personal sovereignty, which is not the case, and so tyrannically call for loss of our freedoms to force us into their way of thought. First they try to marginalize us, then jail us, then kill us.

Paul wrote to Timothy that there will come a time that they ( christians ) will not endure sound doctrines. We are living in that time. Very very few christians read or study bible including preachers, teachers and pastors. That is the sign of the time.

Tolerance?
Posted On: 02/16/08 12:09:42 PM Age 26, TX
Quote: "For instance, take one of the most divisive social issues of our time: abortion. Christian fundamentalists believe that human life begins at conception and should be protected by government. So what do we do? We work through the legal process and the political process to elect representatives who share this view." ...and blow up an abortion clinic or two. ...and protest at a dead soldier's funeral because he was killed as a result of our "toleration of abortion". Give me a break. When you start to care as much about life OUTSIDE the womb and get behind something like, say, universal medical care for those kids once they're born, maybe the rest of the country will listen. And judging by the previous hate-filled responses above I'm having a hard time believing that intolerance is such a virtue. You're not even capable of tolerance within evangelical circles, always on the warpath against the "emerging church" and how they're all going to hell because they don't interpret the Bible as literally as you. It is equally hard for me to believe that the Fundamentalist Right has no intention of taking over government (just look at the Worldview Weekend logo!) given the political machine it has been for the last 20 or so years...only now when it appears that you are losing momentum and the golden opportunity is slipping away from you does it become time to play the persecution card. The only thing the Left is intolerant of is intoleration itself by those who would gain power in order to dictate matters of conscience, whether that group be Fundamentalist Christians or anyone else. Liberals really have no problem with any form of Christianity as long as it doesn't seek pre-eminence and special privilege over every other religion or way of thought. Learn to live with the fact that all men were created equal and are free to believe as they choose, and that our founders actually designed it this way.

  1. It Is Not A Matter of Tolerance
    Posted On: 02/20/08 11:01:06 AMAge 57, CANADA
Many argue today that embryos should be used for stem cell research. They do not want the embryos of monkeys or apes - only those of humans to be used. It is not possible any longer to say that embryos are not human, so let us be honest: abortion ends the life of one class of humans. Of course Christians should be concerned about the lives of humans after they are born, but a Christian's first stand must be to defend the rights of a human being to live! Secondly, it is not hateful to point out error to anyone who questions the truth of scripture, Before saying "your interpretation" we should examine just the words of Jesus alone. From those words which are as plain as they are stated, we can see what we are as humans, where we are, and where we are going unless we repent and trust in Christ alone. It is not hateful to warn others "emergent" or not when they questions these absolute truths. Finally, as the recent film "Amazing Grace" demonstrated, there was a time in relatively recent history when a fundamentalist Christian fought for years in the political realm to end a great evil. Can anyone say that Wilberforce should have been silent and let the evil of slavery continue for many years??

The Price of Tolerance
Posted On: 02/16/08 01:01:32 AM Age 51, TX
It is strange that people claiming to be "Fundamentalists", that is, someone who takes the Bible in the literal in sense, would consider themselves to not be a threat to these antichrists. At the very least, a Fundamentalist should be salt in the wounds of these God haters. When are we all going to wake up and realize that MLK was a thesis plagiarist, a communist sympathizer, and groomed change agent. "Civil rights" was the very thing that took away the power of Christians in our society. It is the "civil rights" movement that forced upon us the lesbian values of the so-called women's movement, and the same rubric is now forcing upon us the values of sodomites. It seems to me Fundamentalists have seen the inspiration of the scriptures, as inspiration to belief in the Love of God, and then inspiration to totally ignore the Wrath of God. These antichrists have become our lords and masters because we did not thrash them when we were dominant. We let effeminate "pastors" get away with doing nothing, and ostracized men with guts enough to sound off and blast the evil with the prophet's voice. The Christians who founded this country had no problem with pastors leading armed militia against the British, and fought under the battle cry “No King but Jesus.” It seems to me that church funding has become more important that “sinners in the hands of an angry God,” and that looking-good to the community is more important than teaching a Bloody Gospel. We have been conquered by tolerance, and we are now enslaved by its horrible tentacles. It seems to me that these atheists have a better sense of what the Bible teaches than do fundamentalists. They understand the that real Christians, a salty church militant, is the greatest threat they face. When are we going to realize the power of Jesus Christ, and quit letting aliens, the antichrists, steal our grain before we are finish threshing it? How about a Christianity based upon “be strong and courageous”, and the spunk of Joshua and Gideon? How about a Church that is fighting it out, rather than hiding out waiting for the end? If we were doing our calling, these antichrists would be under a real threat from our power. As things stand, they see the theoretical threat, and like good “civil rights” activists, enslave us a little more by making us cower in the name of that Ba’al god: TOLERANCE. Choose which way people, back to Egypt, or serve God in the Promised Land?

Amen, Brother/Sister. You are absolutely correct. Much of the Church in this country is truly lost, serving false teachers and prophets as foretold in Revelations. Not sure if the end is near or not, but we should always be prepared just the same.

  2. MLK AND OPHRA HAVE BEEN A CURSE TO THE BLACK RACE
    Posted On: 02/17/08 12:31:25 AMAge 64, OH
Jesus says to judge by the fruit. What is the fruit of the civil rights movement. The black race in this nation were oppressed by men but now they seem oppressed by drugs, crime, murder, disease and the Devil himself. Even the black churches seem to be demanding their rights from God. I have heard people get up and claim a Rolls Royce from God by so called prayer when they could not even afford the gas for such a car. The black race used to be oppressed but they were humble and seemed like true Christians to me back when i was just a kid. I look back on many black people who seem like heroes to me now. But now I do not like most all of black culture. It is loud, arrogant, and anti-Christ. Not many seem to be encouraging people to be around. I think that MLK would have made a far better example to appeal to the Lord Jesus rather than government for justice. I really have a hard time seeing that MLK did anything good for anyone. The black race seems to be far worse off now then they were before MLK. Yes they have more equality and more rich blacks now but they seem much further from the Lord Jesus then they were then. It seems to me the whole nation is worse off now then it was then. The whole nation back then would have thrown Ophra Winfrey out of instead of making her a hero. Lou

INTELLIGENT THINKERS?
Posted On: 02/15/08 07:08:31 PM Age 64, OR
To say "To give these folks their due, they are very intelligent thinkers." is to discredit God's Word which says the "wisdom of man is but folly to God". I'd think that "intelligence" has to include the ability for rational reasoning which secular humanist are void of. A truly intelligent person would weigh both sides of an issue, study the positions in depth without forming concrete opinion. Concrete opinion by secular humanists who do all they can to discredity Christian fundamental thought/believe is a polar opposite from rational reasoning.

  1. WE FIND JESUS BY HIS MERCY AND GRACE
    Posted On: 02/17/08 12:11:07 AMAge 64, OH
I am told by so called intelligent thinkers that I have an IQ in the upper 1% but that did not help me to find the Lord Jesus. I tried to search out the truth but had to admit it was far beyond me. When I admitted this and threw myself on the mercy of my Creator; He in His mercy revealed himself to me. I have also seen retarded people who knew the Lord Jesus and some found Him much easier than I did. So Christians are no more intelligent than atheists; it is just that we have asked for the mercy of God and by His grace and our good fortune he is a God of mercy.

Regardless
Posted On: 02/15/08 01:15:00 PM Age 40, CA
My vote and stance regarding such issues as abortion and legalizing gay marriage is still a vote regardless of the reason. If I choose to not go along with the popular "Christian" agenda as postulated by Warren, that is my right to do so regardless of the fact that such a choice is motivated by my interpretation of the Bible. And if I, as a leader in the church, choose to be obedient to God's Word and, using Scripture, warn others about the wolves who are deceiving many, I am simply doing my job as a church leader and am not violating any government laws or infringing upon anyone's right to refuse to accept Christ as their Lord and Savior. The desire of the "Left" is to quiet the Christian leaders, and to convince as many "Christians" as possible to follow their lead -- because, after all, their vote to pass laws and to ammend the constitution is what matters the most.

  1. JESUS SAYS - FOLLOW ME
    Posted On: 02/17/08 12:03:06 AMAge 64, OH
Dear friend, you say, "that is my right to do so". In your zeal didn't you misspeak. Have not we given up all of our rights to the Lord Jesus and are we not His slaves or bond servants. I have no right or do not want to vote my opinion in this election but only want to search and find out what i can about all who are running. Then I want to seek His face and vote the way He leads me to vote. Is it not better to be lead by the Author of the Book rather than the Book. I read the Book looking for my Lord than I walk with, talk with, and follow Him who shed His blood for me. Lou

  2. Liberalism within Christendom is rampant
    Posted On: 02/16/08 02:07:11 PMAge 64, OR
When you speak of the "Left" one immediately draws conclusions as it being "Democrat" when it is not. The purveyors of liberalism/socialism/communism are rampant and fast-growing within the Church - apostate as they are. There are those in Christian "demoninations" and "non-denomination evangelicals" also propogating liberalist thought to dilute Biblical Christianity and to deceive the saints. They have lost their "salt and light" to be 'man-followers'. God will hold those in higher judgment and they will eternally be lost in hell with their father of lies, Satan. So Christians, you must be very cautious about becoming "man-followers" in compromising what Christian beliefs you have when you chase after Warren, Huckabee, McCain, Romeny, Wallis, McLaren, Hybels, Osteen, et al. To be a "man-pleaser" is to be anti-Christ. Think about it and be a Berean (Acts 17:11) and prove it to be true to yourself. Do you love God/Jesus, or do you love Satan - the father of lies? You choose.
