RELIGION AND PUBLIC OFFICE: THE “ROMNEY” TEST

RELIGION AND PUBLIC OFFICE: THE “ROMNEY” TEST

By Rebecca Hagelin

Now that Mitt Romney is out of the presidential race, it’s the perfect time to discuss what we should have learned from all the chatter about his faith. The questions and answers relating to faith and holding public office are far more important than one candidate.

If you ask almost any American where the Constitution provides for religious liberty, what are you likely to hear? The First Amendment. There, in words many of us know by heart, we read: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof …”

But there’s another important reference to religion in our Constitution. Considering the vitriolic manner in which our modern media culture treats faith in general, though, if you haven’t read the Constitution yourself, you probably don’t even know it’s there.

Article 6, Clause 3 states: “… no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.” That phrase, and the troubled intersection of private faith and public office, is the subject of a fascinating new documentary titled “Article VI.”

Independent filmmakers Bryan Hall and Jack Donaldson explore the current debate over the issue and remind us that ignorance on the subject is nothing new. They show how during John F. Kennedy’s campaign for the presidency in 1960, Kennedy had to go to great lengths to assure non-Catholic Americans that he wouldn’t be a tool of the Vatican -- that the Catholic Church wouldn’t be dictating policy decisions if he were elected. Addressing the Greater Houston Ministerial Association, Kennedy said: “I am not the Catholic candidate for president. I am the Democratic Party’s candidate, who happens to be a Catholic.”

Fast forward 48 years, and it seems remarkable that Kennedy’s faith was an issue. With Catholics serving alongside Protestants and the adherents of other faiths (and no faith) for years, the furor almost appears quaint. You would think the “faith” issue was settled once and for all. But as Hall and Donaldson reveal, when they interviewed people across the country from many walks of life, the way people reacted when Romney, a Mormon, was running for president sounded eerily familiar.

Like Kennedy, Romney had to tell voters repeatedly why his faith didn’t disqualify him for the Oval Office. Are we really still asking such questions in America?

Part of what makes “Article VI” such a compelling film is that Hall and Donaldson give us historical context. They remind us, for example, that there’s a shameful tradition of anti-Catholicism in the U.S. When Al Smith ran for president against Herbert Hoover in 1928, he was pilloried for his Catholic faith. It was denounced as anti-democratic, monarchical -- not in tune with American institutions. And there’s also an appalling tradition of prejudice against those of the Jewish faith who seek high office. Remember the horrible questions the press asked of Sen. Joseph Lieberman when he ran for president? Some things never change. For many in the media, it seems, Mormonism is the new anti-semitism.

Of course, every voter should feel free to NOT vote for a candidate based on any reason -- their politics, their ideology, their position on this issue or that ... even their faith. But if a potential candidate is loyal to America, to say that he is unfit to run for office or unfit to govern because of his faith is just plain wrong -- and the Constitution makes that perfectly clear.

Al Smith lost, of course, and by 1960, such sentiments seemed to be changing. But the media just loves to beat people up over faith. The American public, however, does intuitively seem to understand (although we can often get confused by the headlines). As talk-show host Hugh Hewitt says in “Article VI,” 95 percent of the electorate just wants to know whether someone is a good person, not what his theology is. Otherwise, Hewitt notes, we wouldn’t have elected Abraham Lincoln, who “wasn’t remotely an orthodox Christian.” Lincoln read the King James Bible and spoke openly of God, but he belonged to no specific domination.

In “Article VI,” we hear from Jews, Hindus and Muslims who express their love for this country. We also hear from David French, a constitutional lawyer who advocates Christian rights. As a Christian, he says, he doesn’t believe Muslims and Christians worship the same God, “because the Allah of the Koran bears zero resemblance to the God of the Bible. But there’s a First Amendment in this country. People of all faiths are equal citizens of this republic.”

Whether it’s Mitt Romney speaking boldly of his Mormon faith, Mike Huckabee as an ordained Baptist minister, or Barack Obama taking the pulpit in churches across the country, the personal practice of deep faith by our would-be leaders must be passionately protected. As Kennedy told the Houston ministers: “Today, I may be the victim. But tomorrow, it may be you.”

Romney and the presidency

Ms Hagelin may be a good speaker but she is out of touch in the area of Mormonism. Romney believes a book that is incredibly false. How can a man with not enough intelligence to accept a fiction book as a fact book ever be qualified to be a president of this nation. If she cannot pick up on this is she qualified to speak for the heart of this web site? I hav3 lived in Utah for about 40 years and have yet to see any redeeming qualities from this religious system. I'm guessing

I'm guessing Rebecca is or was a supporter of Romney. I wonder how she'd feel about a no religion test if he were a wiccan, druid or worse. There were no mormons at the constitutional convention, and apparently no prophets. The constitution is not sacred writ. Sure Romney was a pretty rich boy, "presidential looking", but he was/is a cult member. "But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth." John 4:23-24 Christians should seek, and pray for Godly rulers, which means don't vote for ambitious flip-floppers... cultists. "I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;" 1 Timothy 2:1-5. Article VI does not hold sway or take precedence over scripture for Christians. Constitutionally there may be no test, but for Christians considering the casting of their vote, there definitely is... "that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty."

The Bible is ABOVE the Constitution
Posted On: 02/14/08 10:06:14 PM Age 20, NV
We need to stand on the Constitution, but it is NOT above the Scriptures. How are we seeking the Kingdom of God first (Matthew 6:33) if we are trying to place a man who stands for a false religion into the highest-ranking political office in the United States of America? What does that do for the testimony of the Church, when Mormonism is given increased public legitimacy as 'just another denomination' while it teaches heretical doctrine? I'm sorry, Ms. Hagelin, but I'm not buying into this. God will not bless a nation that willfully embraces things which oppose His Word time and time again, and raising up ungodly leaders certainly doesn't help.

America the free

America is not a nation for christians only, but instead it is a great melting pot of combining and integrating many cultures, peoples, faiths and non-faiths. I do not base my vote for leadership in our government on the religious practice of a person, but instead on the ability of the person to govern well and wisely, based on the public record of their deeds and words. I am proud of a nation such as ours that behaves in this manner, rather than the way in which many despotic nations operate, including many Muslim nations.

  1. THIS NATION STARTED BY CHRISTIANS FOR CHRISTIANS
    Posted On: 02/15/08 03:24:33 PMAge 64, OH
It was not Muslim, Mormon, or Jewish blood that was spilled to start this nation but the blood of Christians. It was Christians who came to Plymouth Mass and started this nation. This government was set up for CHRISTIANS to be able to worship the Lord Jesus Christ as to how they interpreted the Bible not the leader of the church of England. It was not freedom FROM Christianity but freedom OF Christianity. Now guests have come into our land and want to change what they did not pay for in BLOOD, SWEAT, OR TEARS. Lou

IT IS RIGHT TO APPLY A CHARACTER TEST
Posted On: 02/14/08 10:13:40 AM Age 64, OH
The US Constitution is a wonderful document but it does not tell us to check our brains at the preamble. JFK was the 1st man I voted for, for president. But the people were right to be concerned about his Catholic faith. The Pope means "Supreme ruler" of the catholic church. The Pope has a history of telling Kings and rulers what to do and they were obliged to obey or be excommunicated if they did not. If JFK said he was a catholic it was only right of the people to assume that he was a good catholic which would obey the pope. JFK said he was a catholic who did not follow the catholic religion of obeying the pope and the people voted for him. - The same is true of Romney. The Mormon faith is far different than the Christian faith that make Jesus Christ their Lord. Mormons are sworn to obey Joseph Smith and not Jesus Christ. Joseph Smith wrote many things that the Mormons are sworn to obey that do not agree with the laws of this nation. The Mormons further swear to obey the leader of the Mormon church and have a history of doing so. The Mormon church has had a armed rebellion against which our nation had to send troops more than once. The Mormon religion is not Christian but anti-Christ. This nation was not set up for freedom of any religion but freedom to worship Jesus Christ in freedom. The people were only correct to assume that Mitt Romney was a sincere man who followed the Mormon faith which would make him disqualified for the office of president. A man can not have a conflict of interests to who he will be loyal to. Romney then tried to say he was a good Mormon and sincere but NOT A GOOD MORMON and would not obey J. Smith or the leader of the Mormon church. A lot of people seen the inconsistency in this, and the man came out looking like he was not truthful, which I agree with. Mitt Romney was at the bottom of the list of candidates for me. - The Muslim religion is another religion that is inconsistent with our form of government. The religion has mandatory beliefs and loyalties that are against the laws of this nation. Any man who is in the Muslim religion is either against this nation or does not follow the religion. If a man does not follow his religion then he is apathetic and did not bother to find out about his religion or he is insincere and does not follow his religion. Neither of these character traits are good traits for the highest office of our nation. On top of that we are at war with the Muslims which they take deathly serious but many in this nation do not. When some Muslim is finally able to explode a dirty bomb in New York many will see how serious it is. Any Muslim would have a conflict of interest to serve in our government. Any Muslim who is a good citizen should excuse himself from serving; and any Muslim who is a good Muslim should try to get elected to sabotage our government. - In WW2 the people had much more wisdom than now. They would have considered a Japanese man for president a joke and an insult of the highest form to our nation and themselves. Lou
