The Cost of Contending

The Cost of Contending

By Jan Markell

www.olivetreeviews.org

Last weekend on my radio program, “Understanding the Times,” I dealt with the topic of contending for the faith.  I had three guests: Pastor Bob DeWaay and two who had “contended” and run into some bumpy roads. (The two-hour program is posted at “Radio Archives” for January 26.) There is a cost to contending for the faith; one will never win a popularity contest.

Why is it necessary today?  Because false theologies and teachers with skewed theology are so admired!  Just visit a Christian bookstore. Which authors are prominently featured?  Most likely those with the weakest or most incorrect theology.  Why? Because publishing houses know they will be the big sellers!  I should know.  I have been in book publishing a number of years but in the last 10 to 12 years I have had to conclude that major publishing houses will not accept a manuscript of mine in the 21st century.  Twenty years ago they took one after another.

What has happened in the last 20 years is like the frog in the kettle. Wolves in sheep’s clothing have slowly crept into the church.  Bad theology worsened but little by little. Because it didn’t happen overnight, many did not notice. Soon, they adjusted to the “new ways of doing church,” be it “seeker-sensitive,” Emergent, etc.

Church leaders “widened the door.”  In other words, they furthered the issue with weak preaching and targeting the unsaved rather than feeding true believers eager to grow.

Church members began to speak up but what happened? I have heard of the many who were lectured, asked to leave, called troublemakers and divisive. Unity has become all-important. But how can true believers be united around false or weak preaching and teaching?  Solid Christians are being told that they must be tolerant for the sake of unity.

Yes, the Bible told us a day was coming when people would not give heed to sound doctrine (II Timothy 2:3, 4). People would want their ears tickled. New ways of doing church today do just that. But following the biblical example, Paul still told Timothy to “preach the Word,” and not “tickle the ears.”

I have been following denominational annual meetings for several years and our once-solid denominations now feature some speakers who will lead their members astray. The churches may be intrigued with the Emergent Church or Emergent-friendly speakers, but they are wolves in sheep’s clothing who will do harm to the sheep. What is blinding our shepherds?

This is one of the battles of the ages, and yet you will likely be told that “tolerance” is a virtue and “contending” is a vice. One of my radio guests this past weekend was told that her church did not observe the Lord’s Supper as the blood was offensive to “seekers.” One has to ask, are these churches more worried about what man thinks than what God thinks? The answer is yes. As stated earlier, false doctrine is lucrative and telling people what they want to hear is lucrative.

While it may be a tough road, God will always honor a love for the truth and your “contending.” To keep silent when such things are going on today is not an option. Eternity may be at stake for some. If you have a passion for the truth and for contending for it, others who are like-minded will come into your life. You are not asked to go on this journey alone. If you do nothing, you are helping the enemy. If you remain silent, you allow the spiritual destruction to continue.

I am asking you to be a part of a solution and not just be a part of discussing the problem.  Will you count the cost of contending and go for it? You will some day be held accountable for what you choose to do.

Shooting our wounded?
Posted On: 08/23/08 09:19:09 PM Age 52, BRAZIL
You "contenders" out there may have been accused of this. By pointing out false teaching, especially in well-known-and-loved leaders, you've heard the following: "Christianity is the only religion that shoots its wounded." But be of good cheer. Not only are we commanded to test teaching and teachers, those who scream the loudest probably have something to hide, which you have brought to the surface. Like confrontational evangelism, just sow the Word and leave the rest to God. If it falls on good soil, its hearers will repent of their folly and return to the Truth!

The real problem
Posted On: 02/04/08 09:52:41 AM Age 47, MO
The cost of contending...purpose, faith, joy, hope, and love? Sign me up! I enjoy the bottom of the dog pile, God dwells in the suffication or the fiery furnace. The problem is that most Christians are not...they seek their own lives, their own gain, and their own glorification. They have no time for God, and why should they? They are taught love, security, understanding, love the sinner and ignore the sin. Pastors have taught a perfect receipe for religious apathy for years, tithe, usher, do the shake and all is well with your soul!!! It's bunk. John

This article really spoke to my soul. It confirmed for me the need to contend earnestly for truth in our faith. We are surrounded by so many who profess the faith yet have wandered far from the truth of God's Word. Blame it on counterfeit bibles, and wolves among the sheep, and ear ticklers, but what we see today is a watered down gospel and the love of their own "truths". As a watchman, I feel it is my duty to expose these things, and it is not a duty that wins me friends. I try to speak the truth in love, but that is not always welcome to those who choose not to see it. Thanks so much!

  1. faith brings more faith

Speaking the truth in love means speaking for their best interest. It is humble and not self seeking. However, most Christians think speaking the truth in love is to not be judgemental or convicting. If truth is 100% true and a lie is everything else, then if the truth is not cutting bone and marrow, is it the truth? Keep speaking truth, be the parent or the grandparent errant people never had and desperately need. Be bold, truth is bold, Christ is truth. Stand on truth and you will find joy, purpose, love, and more faith than you can believe. John

ISRAEL WAS CONTENDING FOR THE FAITH
Posted On: 01/31/08 11:53:04 AM Age 64, OH
Israel was God's people. Israel was sent by God. Israel was sent by God to attack and destroy Ai. The people in Ai were worshiping false gods and sacrificing their own children to that god. They were so evil that God told Israel to destroy them. But when Israel went to destroy Ai it was Israel that was defeated not Ai. Joshua did not keep attacking until Israel was completely defeated; and Joshua did also not blame the defeat on God. But Joshua and the leaders sought God, tearing their clothes, by getting on their face and repenting in dust and ashes before God all night until the Lord answered them. A man from Israel had disobeyed God and had taken gold, silver, and silk from Jericho when they had been told that these must be given to the Lord. It was the sin of Israel that brought about her defeat. The same is true of the church today. Until the leaders of the church get on their face and repent in dust and ashes before God until He answers them; the church will continue to be defeated as Israel was. Israel was contending for the faith when they attacked Ai; but our God is a Holy God. Lou

Churches of Today
Posted On: 01/31/08 09:20:41 AM Age 53, AL
Churches better wake up and be sure of who you have or are calling to be pastor. A thorough background check should be done for anyone hired to do a job in a church. There are men out there who are preaching for the money, not for the love of God and fellow man. The bible warns us of these type people.
