Rick Warren at National Cathedral: Mainline and Evangelical Churches Should Reconcile

Rick Warren at National Cathedral: Mainline and Evangelical Churches Should Reconcile

All of you Christians who thought that the divinity of Christ, the Virgin birth, the penal substitutionary atonement, the literal resurrection of Jesus, and the inerrancy and authority of Scripture are doctrines worth dying for are apparently wrong. The Christian Post reports that Rick Warren is calling on evangelicals to reconcile with mainline churches to stop the mainline churches from dying. Let me repeat that line: Rick Warren is calling on evangelicals to reconcile with mainline churches to stop the mainline churches from dying. Wow.

“The reconciliation is that in a pluralistic world…we (Christians) need to be on the same team because we share the same savior,” Warren contended Sunday, as he spoke with the dean of the Washington National Cathedral, Samuel T. Lloyd III, who observed that evangelical churches are thriving and full of vitality, while most mainline denominations are confronting worrisome membership decline.

During the Cathedral’s weekly Sunday Forum: Critical Issues in the Light of Faith, Lloyd asked Warren how mainlines should tackle the problem.

So there Warren sits, with the dean of the nation’s top apostate episcopal church, (which regularly features New Spirituality teachers and which teaches that homosexuality is A-OK) telling the world that we all worship the same Savior. Rick Warren apparently wants evangelicals to reconcile with mainline episcopal churches like the one in Seattle where the female pastor cleverly managed to become a Muslim while still retaining her clergy credentials. Rick Warren doesn’t want to see mainline churches like this die so he wants evangelicals to link arms to save them. Then there's the mainline ELCA church called Her Church, which uses goddess rosaries and has the congregants pray, “Our Mother, who is within us, we celebrate your many names...” Reconciliation, fellow Christians?

Rick Warren characterizes the rift between mainline and evangelical like this:

“100 years ago the phrase ‘social gospel’ first came out,” Warren responded. “Some people took that to mean only if we reform the social government and society and not personal faith in Christ Jesus – that is, if we make the world a better place – we don’t need personal redemption.”

That idea led to mainline churches going “one way” and evangelical churches another way, he said.

Uh, Mr. Warren, aren’t you forgetting something? How about those troublesome issues of cardinal doctrine? When you were training to be a pastor, didn't they teach you about the fall of Princeton Seminary and the others that followed all those years ago? Did you ever hear of the battle over the authority of Scripture, or did your seminary professors keep you too busy with church growth classes? Did you ever hear of modernism and higher criticism that gutted these churches in the last century, Mr. Warren, or were you too occupied at the Crystal Cathedral sitting at the feet of Robert Schuller? The  battle that divided mainline from evangelical in the last century wasn't a case of one Christian group going in one direction to serve the poor and the other group of Christians choosing to preach about redemption. (Mr. Warren asserts that if we can just join up with the other side, all the bases will be covered.) The issues were black on white, truth against error, the Gospel versus another gospel that was contrary to Scripture. What was at stake was no less than the millions of souls under the care of these apostate, liberal denominations. That is still what is at stake.

Rick Warren’s presence in the pulpit of National Cathedral on January 27, and his call for “reconciliation” with such churches should disgust every Christian who believes in the authority of Holy Scripture and who understands the critical importance of the foundational doctrines of the Christian faith. National Cathedral is a New Age pantheon to the gods of the world religions. That's why the church can feature goddess theology proponents teaching women how to dance in “sacred circles”, welcome the worship of Tibetan monks, teach Buddhist meditation techniques and introduce attendees to the Jewish Kabbalah. Where is Rick Warren's concern about the people who are on their way to hell in these churches that blaspheme the Lord Jesus Christ with goddess worship, homosexuality, a rejection of Christ’s penal substitutionary atonement, a denial of the authority of Scripture, and the promotion of the doctrines of anti-Christ?

I have news for Rick Warren and the dean of National Cathedral. Most mainline churches aren’t dying, they’re already dead, and increasingly apostate evangelical leaders like Rick Warren aren't going to change that. Real life in a church comes, not with thousands streaming through the door, but with the true knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ as revealed in the Bible. Such knowledge is impossible in churches where the Gospel message is absent and lies are preached in its place. Influential fellow Southern Baptists like Dr. Al Mohler and anyone else who loves biblical truth must speak out against Mr. Warren’s apostasy. This is the battle for truth in our time. To remain silent on this is treason against the Lord and His church.

And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.

And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

–II Corinthians 6:16-18

Ecumenism will not bring revival
Posted On: 03/10/08 11:06:18 PM Age 58, TN
Thank you so much for standing for the truth of the Word of God! Do these ecumenists not know the Scripture? They have given up the Truth for fables and expect God to bless the mess. The absence of the Truth in our pulpits has helped foster the current shallow thinking that we're all brothers and headed for the same place. The liberal seminaries have produce apostate preachers that know not the Lord, and it shows in the lack of real heart-felt Holy Ghost conviction that leads a searching soul to the Savior. I fear America is headed down the slippery slope and without real, God sent revival (like that of the Hebrides) there will be certain and impending judgment from God on this pitiful nation so caught up in Hollywood entertainment as they sleep on in darkness. God bless your ministry.

Purpose driven to where?????
Posted On: 02/03/08 04:11:09 PM Age 53, MA
I am so glad my church and myself did not get caught up in the purpose driven craze when Mr. Warren published his books. I fear what Rick Warren will have to facew when He stands before the throne of Jesus and account for his trampling the Word of God to "meaninglessness" to his audiences.

  1. the purpose of the church

I thought the Bible stated the church's purpose. Preach the word and bring people to a true knowledge of the Christ, that is in the Bible. RW doesn't know that the purpose of the church is to glorifty God. God calls a man to preach, it's the Holy Spirit that convicts a man to repent. Our job is to preach God will give the increase. I know that RW is lacking in faith, because he only counts results as a sucess. Noah preach 120 years and didn't convert the unbelievers. Jesus preached to thousands in John chapter and none came to Him. The purpose of our Church is to Glorify GOD, by bringing individuals to faith in JESUS CHRIST and encouraging believers to conform their lives to the image of CHRIST reflected in the BIBLE.

What On Earth Am I Here For?
Posted On: 02/02/08 03:04:16 PM Age 75, PA
Is this Rick Warren's Purpose in life? Will this simplify his life? Will it reduce his stress? Will it help him to focus his energy? Will it give his life meaning? Will it prepare him for eternity? He apparently needs to bone up on church history and learn the sacrifices the people from the mainline churches endured. In II Corinthians 6:l7 & 18, it reads "Wherefore come out from among them and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing, and I will receive you saith the Lord, and I will be a Father to you and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Almighty." No compromise or complicity with evil here! Think!!!

Why in the world then is Rick Warren getting such respectable support even from "evangelical", non denom.,inter denom, churches? Please keep sounding the ALERT ... maybe some of these churches will hear it. Peace

Score another one for secular humanism
Posted On: 01/31/08 09:30:05 AM Age 50, KS
Its no surprise that Rick would preach in like manner. The foundational claims of christ are no longer inerrant and unfortunately out of date for these people. To add or subtract anything from the scriptures, EVEN under the guise of reaching the lost is clearly contrary to the holy word! As long as these "professing believers" look to a humanistic understanding they will fall short of Gods will and they stand a greater chance of causing people to fall away rather than to the Lord. Of course, if the Hly spirit is woeing the soul, conviction will lead one to bend the knee. We must continue to contend for the truth at all cost, the apostate will be seen for what it is, and it shall not stand against the Truth. By the way, Websters defines the truth as fidelity to the original.

Rick Warren - Repent or We separate ourselves from you
Posted On: 01/30/08 08:03:09 PM Age 64, OR
When a professed believer sins through apostasy, he is to be confronted in love to give him a chance to repent and turn back to the Lord. If he doesn't then scripture tells us to separate ourselves from them. For a fact Rick Warren has been confronted about his apostasy and even though he admits it he has not repented nor pulled his books and tapes from bookstores. Warren is a double-minded man. Jesus is NOT the way for all religions because they each see Him in different ways (e.g. Mormons, Islam, etc.). Many profess to be Christian yet have no real concept of what it means to BE a follower of Christ. Sadly when Jesus returns and takes up the Church, many will be left behind to go through the great tribulation. They can call that a "second chance" for true salvation.

  1. GREAT TRIBULATION
    Posted On: 01/31/08 07:31:05 PMAge 64, OH
Dear friend,Jesus said it will be as in the days of Noah. The few were in the ark that they had built according to the exact instructions of the Lord. The flood came and carried away the unrighteous, they had no second chance as you say. The righteous will not be moved as it says in the scripture. The righteous remained in the ark on this earth and went through the flood. It was the flood itself that saved the righteous from the earthquakes for it lifted them above the destruction and the ark protected them from the flood. If not for the ark they would have died also. The ark is Jesus. Jesus will not keep us from tribulation but keep us in that tribulation. Look at Matthew 24: 21For then there WILL BE GREAT DISTRESS, UNEQUALED FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE WORLD UNTIL NOW - AND NEVER TO BE EQUALED AGAIN. 22If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened. 23At that time if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or, 'There he is!' do not believe it. 24For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect—if that were possible. 25See, I have told you ahead of time. 26"So if anyone tells you, 'There he is, out in the desert,' do not go out; or, 'Here he is, in the inner rooms,' do not believe it. 27For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 28Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather. 29"IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE DISTRESS OF THOSE DAYS " 'the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.'[c] 30"At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory. 31And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other. - So we see that right after the great tribulation Jesus returns and gathers His elect from the earth and from heaven. Emergent church = liberalism
Posted On: 01/30/08 07:02:39 PM Age 46, AZ
I cannot help but see the blaring similarities between Warren's brand of Christianity and liberalism in our national politics. Rather than the mainline (dead) churchs changing to become more like Gospel centered evangelical churchs, those of us who rely on Scripture alone are called to compromise the Truth. Similarly, liberals call for bi-partisanism from conservatives when in reality it's just conservatives compromising their principals. Thank you Ingrid for standing for the Truth.
