The Cable Every Home Needs

The Cable Every Home Needs

Jim Elliff & Steve Burchett

I once stood by the Rhone River in Basel, Switzerland, watching the swift current. On this river was an unusual ferry. Concrete pillars on each side held the strong steel cable to which the ferry was attached. Without an engine, the ferry simply turned slightly to one side or the other to allow the currents themselves to propel it to the other side. Successfully arriving on the other side depended on those faithful cables. Otherwise, the ferry would be carried downstream.

Consider the importance of that cable, and then think about this: God's Word is such a cable for our children. If they are ever going to renounce "ungodliness and worldly desires" and follow Christ (Titus 2:12), they must hear the truth. We must apply what the Apostle Paul makes lucid through a series of questions in Romans 10:

How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? . . . So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. (vv. 14, 17)

Faith depends upon the facts of Christ's saving work. As parents, grandparents, pastors, and teachers of children, we are obligated to make these facts as clear as possible. A child's real understanding of the gospel is in God's hands (cf. Romans 9:16), but our children cannot believe unless they hear the truth. They should grow up breathing biblical air! Like the inviting smell of a home-cooked meal permeating the home, so the Word of God should fill every room.

Notice how important facts are to the Apostle Paul. He reminded the Corinthians, "If Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished" (1 Corinthians 15:17-18). Salvation depends upon the "fact" of the resurrection. Objective truth is essential in the salvation of our children.

Think of it like this: Genuine faith will always involve reliance upon the biblical Christ. If the integrity of the message about Christ is compromised, children may put their faith in something other than the true Savior—that is, "another Jesus" and "a different gospel" (2 Corinthians 11:4).

Let's be practical about this by thinking through three obvious implications for those of us who have, or minister to, children.

First, we must grow in our own knowledge of the Bible. How familiar are you with the content of Scripture? The Bible contains all of the words of God that we need in order to know about salvation from sin and godly living. For the eternal joy of your children, turn off the television and start reading.

Second, we must become increasingly familiar with the content of the gospel itself. I'm not speaking about just knowing a few key verses, but thoroughly understanding the good news our children so urgently need. Again, regular Bible reading is the most effective means of growing in the knowledge of the gospel. Also, you may wish to purchase a solid systematic theology and to study thoroughly the sections on the character of God, the nature of man, and the person and work of Christ.1

Third, we must proclaim to our children the content of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Foundationally, we will want to show them how the whole Bible fits together. Help them see that there is a path to Jesus Christ anywhere one touches down in the Bible.2 Specifically, we should spend countless hours teaching the gospel itself. Do those children God has entrusted to your care know much about the Son of God who came into this world to save sinners?

I could not help but think of our western culture that day as I watched the ferry on the Rhone River. The "current" of our culture is moving very fast in the wrong direction. We have the sober responsibility as parents and leaders of children to do all we are capable of doing to fasten our children's small hands to the cable of the Word of God. Yet, sadly, there are many parents who do nothing for the salvation of their children. They throw them in the river with no consideration of the Word. And then that insensible parent wonders why their precious children have been carried away by the culture.

A child's only hope is the gospel of Christ. We must do everything within our power to present the Word, and the Christ this Word portrays, as the reliable "cable" to take our children safely to the other side.

Defining Gospel and Word
Posted On: 01/30/08 08:25:48 AM Age 45, MN
Quote: "A child's only hope is the gospel of Christ. We must do everything within our power to present the Word, and the Christ this Word portrays, as the reliable "cable" to take our children safely to the other side." This is an excellent conclusion, with which I heartily agree. However, the authors have taken a circuitous exegetical route to arrive at this conclusion. But, it is not difficult to know what Jesus' Gospel message was, or what God's Word is. Gratefully the Scriptures are able to satisfy our spiritual query. The first time that the word gospel is used in the Gospels is Matthew 4:23 - "Jesus was going throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people." But what is this Gospel message that He proclaimed? It is found earlier in the chapter, 4:12 - "Now when Jesus heard that John had been taken into custody, He withdrew into Galilee; ...17 From that time Jesus began to preach and say, 'Repent, for the kingdom of Heaven is at hand.'" The Greek word euaggelion is the word that is translated into English as gospel. It is also translated as "good news." The good news of Jesus is that the kingdom of God was at hand. Therefore He implores those who heard His message to repent. Repent of what? Repent of the sin in one's life, Luke 5:32 - "I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." What is sin? Transgression of the Law of God is sin, 1 John 3:4 - "Everyone who practices sin also practices Lawlessness; and sin is Lawlessness." What does Jesus say about the Law? Matthew 5:17 - "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. 18 For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished." Just as "repent" is a commandment from the mouth of Jesus, so is "do not think" is a commandment. We are not to even think that His Father's Words in the form of His instructions (laws, statutes, ordinances, and commandments) are abolished. Why? Because these words are the very Word of Truth, John 17:17 - "Sanctify them in the truth; Your Word is truth." Psalm 119:142 - "Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, And Your Law is truth." Romans 2:20 - "...a corrector of the foolish, a teacher of the immature, having in the Law the embodiment of knowledge and of the truth." The Torah (Law) of God will certainly illuminate the function of this life saving "cable;" not only for children, but for their parents as well. Jesus is this life saving cable, as He is the Word (Law) of God made flesh, John 1:14 - "And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth."

  1. THE WORD OF GOD IS GOD
    Posted On: 02/01/08 12:19:19 AMAge 64, OH
1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God in the beginning. 3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.- Jesus is called the Word of God because he is God Himself and in a form that we men can see. Or in other words Jesus is the Revelation of God to man. Written words or spoken words, if true, reveal something and so the Word of God is a Name that Reveals what the purpose and nature of the Lord Jesus Christ. The first words of the Bible are "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth". The heavens declare the Glory of God. And so it the Word of God that created everything that exists. Or the creation reveals the glory of God as The Word of God created the creation. The Word is revealing again the nature and purpose of God. The last book of The Revelation is the Revelation of the Lord Jesus Christ. So it is The Word of God that reveals again as He returns to the earth and reveals the nature and purpose of God. The Word of God is the Revelation of God or The Lord Himself in a way we men can see. The Word of God will reveal Himself to the whole universe when he returns, and every knee will bow and every tongue confess that he is Lord. Even those who said that Jesus was not God Almighty. Lou

Just as important

The Bible is useless without the Spirit. We have plenty of Bible knowlege without the Spirit, that's why we have denominations. Any clod can learn the Word, but only the Spirt can give the Word. Most of christianity is Spiritless with a small number (clergy) who know a little theology whom everyone follows. Back to your illustration, the cable is the Word but the current is the Spirit!

  1. Wrong Current
    Posted On: 01/30/08 03:18:28 PMAge 59, MO
This is one of the authors of the article. Please don't take me wrongly, but the current had better not be the Spirit or else the Spirit is leading our children away from the Word. In our illustration, the current is the culture. As authors, we get the privilege of determining its meaning. But illustrations prove nothing. We heartily agree that the Spirit must be involved. We wish we could say everything each time we write an article, but, as other readers will acknowledge, this is impossible. Your changing of the illustration, however, reminds us of the opposite of what you infer, that is, that the Spirit works in tandem with His Word and not contrary to it.

    1. THE SONS OF GOD ARE THOSE WHO WALK IN THE SPIRIT
      Posted On: 02/01/08 12:00:21 AMAge 64, OH
The Holy Spirit has no equal and no partners. The Bible is not the Word but the Bible tells us that Jesus is The Word and there is no other and none like Him. The Holy Scripture is a tool and nothing more or less. The Bible can not save or work in any way, but it is the Author of the Book that does the work. The Bible was not eternal for it did not exist at the beginning. The Bible is part of the creation but The Word of God will never pass away and is the First and the Last. The pharisees looked the the scriptures and were lost. Jesus told them in John 5:39You diligently study[c] the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, 40yet you refuse to come to me to have life.- Anyone who trust in the Holy Scriptures to lead or save will be lost; because Paul says that if you trust in Jesus and something else to save you then Jesus can not save you. I read the Holy Scriptures everyday and every single letter of them is true. But I do not trust the scriptures to save or guide me; for men have done that and went in opposite directions. I look in the scriptures to find communion with the Lord Jesus Christ and then I ask Him to guide me and follow His Holy Spirit. The Bible NEVER says to follow the Bible but says the sons of God are those who follow the Spirit. Lou
