How Do You Grade The Presidency of George W. Bush?

How Do You Grade The Presidency of George W. Bush?

By Brannon S. Howse

On my live radio program, Thursday afternoon, I asked my audience to grade the Presidency of George W. Bush as an A, B, C, D, or F. Not one caller gave him an A. In fact, he averaged the grade of a C. Click here to hear the achieved broadcast

Right now we are conducting a poll on the homepage of www.christianworldviewnetwork.com and at the time I am writing this piece, the President is not even averaging a C. Of course, that might change as our poll is taken by more people.

The bottom line is this; true conservatives are extremely disappointed in President Bush. Without Reagan conservatives, he would not have been elected and re-elected and they feel like their worldview was not strongly and consistently represented.

Two of the greatest failures of President Bush was squandering two historic opportunities. After eight long years of putting up with the antics of Bill and Hillary Clinton, and their big government, the American people were hungry to follow a leader that was moral, convicted and conservative. After 9-11, he again was given a great opportunity to lead like no other president in modern time. On both accounts, President Bush squandered his opportunities.

President Bush has proven that he was not a Ronald Reagan conservative but a big government moderate at best.

Here are a few reasons why I think President Bush deserves, at best, the grade of C for his Presidency:

  • Under his “compassionate conservatism”, which means massive, liberal social spending programs, we have seen the government grow beyond the growth rates of Bill Clinton, even when you take out military spending.
  • Under the Bush Administration, the Department of Education grew. This happened with such legislation as “No Child Left Behind” that President Bush passed by partnering with Senator Ted Kennedy.
  • Bush pushed for the amnesty of 20 million illegal aliens when he knew that it was not what the American people desired.
  • The Solicitor General of President Bush has argued before the U.S. Supreme Court against the 2nd Amendment and in favor of depriving the citizens of D.C. the right to bear arms. If the Court agrees with the Solicitor General, this could be chilling for the 2nd Amendment.
  • In January 2008, President Bush traveled to Israel to urge Israel to give up their land to terrorists. President Bush turned on Israel by telling them to stop occupying the land.
  • Bush pushed through his big government prescription drug program.
  • The Bush administration has been teeming with radical homosexuals like Mark Dybul at the State Department
  • His administration has introduced and promoted the North American Union
  • An executive order by President Bush allowed for an estimated 100 Mexican trucking companies to travel over our borders. This is not only dangerous but drives down the wages of American truckers and makes the trafficking of drugs more likely.
  • President Bush refused to fund and build a wall to keep out illegal aliens. President Bush signed a bill to fund and build the wall before the last election and then his administration put so much red tape in the way that its construction was halted.
  • President Bush has celebrated the Muslim holiday Ramadan inside the White House.
  • President Bush has refused to pardon two border patrol agents that shot a convicted drug dealer in the side of the butt. These two men now sit in prison and one was assaulted while in prison.
  • The administration of President Bush has built a U.S. Embassy in Bagdad that cost nearly one billion dollars.
  •  President Bush was slow on defending traditional marriage once in office. Months of meetings and arm twisting by the Arlington Group was required to finally get the President to give a speech in defense of a Constitutional Amendment to defend marriage.
  • There are reports from former White House insiders that major players inside the White House would regularly mock evangelical conservatives.
  • President Bush could have quickly signed legislation to make the cross in San Diego a national memorial and shut-up the liberal ACLU that wanted the cross removed. President Bush waited months before responding.
  • President Bush has failed to defend his policies and administration in a well crafted and executed public relations campaign. He failed to use the “bully pulpit” to sell his agenda to the American people. For instance, why did he not introduce former, top Iraqi air force general Georges Sada to the American people in a major press conference? General Sada spent months in the US speaking and promoting his book, Saddam’s Secrets. General Sada said that Saddam Hussein smuggled biological and chemical weapons into Syria, using civilian airliners acting under cover of a humanitarian mission.
  • President Bush has allowed the globalist at the State Department to set his foreign policy agenda.

I think you get the idea. I will stop adding to this list.

On the positive side, President Bush has:

  • Given us tax cuts
  • Defended America and thus far prevented any additional attacks since 9-11
  • Defended the sanctity of life and refused to federally fund embryonic stem cell research.
  • Appointed what may turn out to be two conservatives to the U.S. Supreme Court.
  • Returned honor to the Oval Office in his personal conduct and behavior.

The Reagan conservatives are so discouraged by the last eight years and the current crop of Republican candidates, that it will be a miracle if they show up at the poll to vote in large numbers. In fact, if they do show up to vote, it will not be that they are voting for the Republican (liberal or moderate) that is nominated but voting against Hillary or Obama.

Indeed President Bush was far better than the alternative of Gore and Kerry. However, the extreme liberal and socialists candidates of the Democrats should not define what we are willing to accept.

Thanks to President George W. Bush, the bar has been lowered as to what a “conservative” is and the Republican Party may not survive. Do you really think if President George W. Bush had been a leader like President Reagan the party standard would have been lowered to allow for such candidates as Giuliani, McCain, Romney and Huckabee?

So what do you think? Post your thoughts on our website below. Also go to the home-page of www.christianworldviewnetwork.com and scroll down the page to give President Bush a grade on his presidency when you take our poll.

give Bush a C

I agree with many of the complaints mentioned. I feel Bush did not live up to the promise. I was very disappointed that there was no real attempt at a marriage amendment and his acknowledgment of Islam. I think he did some good things and was a needed clean-up from the slime the Clintons left in the White House. I pray that God protects us from Billary and Obama. The Republician party is in bad shape but what do you expect in a county of mostly lost people. There are few good candidates available.

B=Better Bush than Clinton
Posted On: 01/30/08 02:40:32 PM Age 65, IA
While I am personally disappointed in many of President Bush's decisions, my personal convictions will never change, but we must always evaluate the alternative. Bro. Bush is the product of his background experience. There was a time when all of our politicians worked together to benefit the United States of America. Yes they did "bring home the bacon" to their districts, but the "bacon" was usually benefical to help bring economic growth not personal enrichment. While the President is the "head" of our government, there are thousands of federal and state officials that are just as important to the whole process. We need to grow the integrity, spiritual philosophy, and political philosophy by being active where we are before we can expect the higher offices to change.

Reiteration of my prev. post
Posted On: 01/29/08 09:56:29 PM Age 19, MN
First off, I must say I appreciate 86 TX (WWII Vet) for responding to my prev. post (somehow I can't find it now...must be a glitch cuz I did e-mail Brannon and he did not remove it). Anyway, my point again is this (for those who may have missed it): Do we, as Christians, pray for our leaders often? I ask this because I confess to rarely do so, certianly not enough as I ought. Why do I ask this? Well, many people it seems are upset with the Bush presidency (and yes, I am not thrilled with some of his positions on issues either), but I wonder if we are looking at this clearly in regards to the relation of prayer and govt. If we prayed more to God for His guidance for our leaders...what impact would this have on our nation? See, it seems that we were looking like the job was done the moment the 2004 election was over (with the GOP being still in control). No, not by a long shot. Why? THESE ARE FALLEN HUMAN BEINGS! NOT GOD! That's why. Do we expect everything to work out well the moment we have the correct people in office and that they won't stumble?? I think we need to look carefully and ask, "Can I expect, even leaders in our govt. who are Christians, to be good leaders without God's wisdom being bestowed on them?" Nope, I don't think that is a reasonable (or Biblical) option. Bush deserves the criticism, yes, but I think that if we maybe had prayed more for God moving in his heart (regardless on one's personal belief of whether he is a true Christian or a false convert) to choose the right thing that maybe the list of grievences would not be nearly as long. We can't trust FALLEN MEN to succeed 100% for godly things...and yet we seem to expect that Pres. Bush to do that. Do we do that with prayer or without? These are fallen human beings in our govt. and if we are expecting them to stand strong and hold out without prayer and fasting, we are relying on our own strength and not God's. By the way, this does not merely apply to Pres. Bush, but for all our leaders regardless of their political position. So, pray for your leaders, especially if things seem to be going the wrong direction. Also, for those who have been very upset with the Pres. and GOP, I want them to especially think this carefully over: If you haven't or rarely prayed for them, then I think the blame is partially on you for not asking the God of this Universe who knows all to enlighten and guide our leaders in wisdom and truth (by the way, I would take this blame myself, since I already have admitted that I haven't prayed enough for him). They are accountable for their actions, but then so are we. Just a thought to chew on. God Bless!! :)

I would give President Bush an F because he used the Christian card to win the presidencey and then he acted the same as any other politician. God is even further from America than anytime before.

How could gwb bring honor back to the white house? He'll go down in history as one of THE most incompetent, spineless embarrassments that has ever occupied the oval office. Time after time when America needed strong leadership, he failed again and again. He is the epitome of a wolf in sheeps clothing. What really upsets me and probably all of us Christian Conservatives, is that he parades around like one of us! He's not "saved". And the liberal media still complains! He lied about who he was from the start, "I don't care about polls...". I hate to say this but, true conservatism in american politics is dead.

President Bush is a good President
Posted On: 01/28/08 10:01:51 PM Age 61, NC
1. He protected our country from further attack since 911. 2. He got the FBI and CIA to cooperate. 3. He is prolife 4. He and his wife set a positive example. 5. I believe he is wrong in supporting new palistine and having Israel give up land. I believe this compromise will be a fore runner to Daniel 9:27. I do not think he understands the ramifications of such an agreement. His intentions are good, but it is easier to judge when you are not sitting in the oval office. Over all I rate him a B+. I believe Islam is the greatest threat to Israel and our national security. Many of those in office especially the libros don't understand the threat.

It's my honor to give him an "A"
Posted On: 01/28/08 04:33:59 PM Age 55, CA
Many of the items on your list of grievances against President Bush are not accurate or are based on what is the perceived "Christian" political position. Some are based partly on rumor, (i.e. ridicule of Christians in the W.H., which has been since found to be a lie), or the wish for him to be a Christian activist. His job is to protect and defend our country, (which he does well) not to transform a SECULAR society. MacArthur's notes on II Pet.4:15 re Christian living during times of persecution says, "As a general rule, a Christian living in a non-Christian culture is to do his work faithfully, exalt Jesus Christ, and live a virtuous life, rather than try to overturn or disrupt his culture." (MacArthur Study Bible). There is a difference between exercising our PERSONAL responsibility in a democratic government and being an activist, trying to force unbelievers to live as believers are called to do, which many times draws more persecution on God's people. God doesn't ask Christians to use their "BULLY PULPIT", but to be a faithful witness. "He has shown you O Man, what is good and what does the Lord require of you, but to do justly.. to love mercy and to walk humbly with thy God" Micah 6:8. We must open our eyes to the fact that we live in a POST-CHRISTIAN SOCIETY and we must be wise, not act like bulls in a china shop. Do a word search in the Bible on aliens, or strangers. You will find that God expects His people to not oppress them, but treat them justly. Aside from imposing a penalty for breaking our laws, we should be careful NOT to oppress them. Think of the opened doors of witness to so many people that GOD DOES LOVE, that results from our presence in the Middle East, across the world and from the aliens' presence in our own country! Can't you see the hand of God working? I think we should be very careful before we criticize the leader that GOD'S HAND HAS PUT IN PLACE! Satan is doing his best to bring down and discredit a godly President, who is not afraid to identify himself with the name of JESUS. Remember Jesus' words, "If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you." Jn.15:18-19, AND because the world will hate us, (as some hate President Bush) it will become so severe that we will be delivered up to tribulation and killed, as Mt. 24:9-14 says “…and you will be hated by all nations for my name's sake and then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray…. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come." MT 24:9,14 God commands us to pray for our leaders, not undermine their authority. We must pray that God will fight for us, and not expect one man, President Bush, to effectuate a national revival. That will take all of God's people praying fervently that HIS will, not OUR will would be done.

To tell you the truth, I did not even read your article. The title was enough for me to realize that you are not a christian, otherwise you would not be so blind and fooled by Bush and his policies, especially with Israel. My God and Allah are not the same. My God is a God of peace and love. Have you ever heard a muslim mention the words together in the same sentence? Do you not realize that it is because of some of Bush's policies toward Gods chosen people and the dividing of His land that some of the weather catastrophes are a result? age 46, Bahamas

Bush gets a F+
Posted On: 01/27/08 05:30:29 AM Age 57, OH
Bush gets a F+ on his report card. The only things that kept his grade above an F was his two appointments to the SC. He preaches the One True God of Christianity is the same god of Islam. He celebrated Islamic holy days at the White House just in order to balance his invasions of Islamic countries. He says Islam, which is an antichrist religion is a peaceful one. He appointed a homosexual to his administration and allowed him to swear on a Bible at the White House, his Secretary of State calling one of the homosexual's mother, the mother in law while Barbara his wife was in attendance. In many ways he was like Clinton. Did I mention his leader position in forcing Israel to give up more Covenant land to appease the believers in the anti-christ religion. The more I write the more I want to give him an F. Don Costello

I have to plead guilty, with the one who asked how often we prayed for our leaders, as we are commanded to do as Christians. We have strayed a long way from what our founding fathers started. Certainly, Pres. Bush has failed in some areas, but I think some critics have been overly harsh; he's been a vast improvement over the preceeding one. I was sceptical of the Iraq war at first, but when reminded of the many times we have been attacked, by 'middle-eastern males', over approximately 29 years-several of our embassies, USS Cole, Marine barracks in Beiruit, etc, I think it was justified. The radical Islamists intend to destroy us, as well as Israel.
