THE LINK BETWEEN FREEDOM & PROSPERITY

THE LINK BETWEEN FREEDOM & PROSPERITY

By Rebecca Hagelin

If there’s one thing the American experiment proves, it’s the power of freedom to transform lives. If you let people control their own destinies, there’s no limit to what they can achieve. But if you bind them with the straitjacket of central planning, smother their creativity with over-regulation, fence them in with high tariffs and take their hard-earned money with high taxes, you kill their dreams even as you wreck an economy.

That’s the central lesson of the “2008 Index of Economic Freedom,” just released by The Heritage Foundation and The Wall Street Journal. A country-by-country survey of how free people are worldwide to direct their own economic fortunes, the Index repeatedly demonstrates the vital link between freedom and prosperity. Simply put, the freer people are, the more an economy grows -- and the more everyone benefits.

Take something as basic as income. In the world’s most restricted economies, rated as “repressed” and “mostly unfree” by the Index editors, average income hovers around $4,000 a year. But in a “moderately free” economy, it’s three times as much: $12,830. If you’re in a “mostly free” one, you can double even that amount: $26,630 annually. And in a “free” economy? $33,579 -- more than eight times the money you’d earn in an unfree economy. Turns out you can put a price on economic liberty.

So which country has the freest economy? It may surprise you to learn that it’s not the United States. In fact, the U.S. isn’t even in the top three. We come in at No. 5 -- a bit disappointing, perhaps, but not bad when you notice that the Index editors graded more than 150 nations. Hong Kong took the top spot for the 14th year in a row, followed by Singapore, Ireland and Australia. New Zealand (6th) and Canada (7th) are the only other countries rated “free,” which means they average 80 percent or better on the Index scale of 0-100.

Now, what exactly do we mean when we say that an economy is “free”? Every country is different, of course, with various strengths and weaknesses, but it generally means several things. It means that taxes and inflation are low. It means that the government doesn’t spend too much or control the banks. It means property rights are protected, businesses are easy to start, and the court system -- which is largely free from corruption -- enforces contracts. It means tariffs are low, foreign investment is welcomed, and regulations are kept to a minimum.

The Index editors carefully study the data for each of these areas to assign a grade to each country. Small wonder that only seven make the cut as “free.” Most of the world’s economies fall in the “moderately free” (51) or “mostly unfree” (52) categories. The rest are divided up pretty evenly between “mostly free” (23) and “repressed” (24). Which means that most of the world’s population isn’t very free, economically speaking.

But don’t despair. For one thing, although the level of overall economic freedom held fairly steady over the last year, the overall trend since the inaugural Index in 1995 has been up. Plus -- and here’s the most hopeful part of the whole enterprise -- countries can, and many do, improve. The history of the Index is filled with success stories. Ireland is a prime example, as is Chile. Both nations have made clear-cut changes over the years -- changes that have given people more economic freedom and therefore helped their economies grow.

This connection between freedom and wealth is by no means new. In fact, the Index can be viewed as a new tool to prove an old truth. As the editors note in the introduction to the 2008 Index: “Economic theory dating back to the publication of Adam Smith’s The Wealth of Nations in 1776 emphasizes the lesson that basic institutions that protect the liberty of individuals to pursue their own economic interests result in greater prosperity for the larger society.”

Economic freedom is about more than just the bottom line. When you give people the liberty they crave, you do more than boost an economy -- you make it possible for men and women to improve their lives. In the words of the Declaration of Independence, they’re free to engage in “the pursuit of happiness.” And as the Index proves, it’s a virtuous cycle that leaves everyone better off than they were before.

Just a few comments. Measuring economic freedom is not the same as measuring a person's true freedom - knowing ones freedom in Christ. Average incomes per nation are very distorted by the very rich and very poor. Sadly even in the free nations the gap between rich and poor are growing daily. Finally, Jesus new commandment is often better practiced in the very poor nations.

  1. ISRAEL CHOSE A KING AND LOST GOD

It is not economic freedom that is the most important. God tells Israel that if they choose a king ( government makes the choice instead of you)then that would fall away from God. What God warned about happened and is a matter of history. The more decisions that government makes the more ungodly the nation becomes. Lou

I understand that a king was not God's will for Israel. However I am not sure what that has to do with the individuals personal faith in God. Being born & living under harsh Roman rule had no affect on Jesus' faith walk with His Father. So all I was trying to say is that true freedom cannot be measured by the amount of political & economic freedom we have.

It was not God's will to have a King but for us to live in freedom. The same is always true. God desires freedom for His people even in their government. Lou

Dear Friend; you are correct. I can have true freedom in prison. We are always free to choose Jesus and follow Him. But my point was it is silly and even wrong to volunteer for prison. Lou

SLAVES TO SIN AND DEATH - OR FREE TO LIVE
Posted On: 01/18/08 04:23:24 PM Age 64, OH
The Holy Bible gives us examples of this freedom. As Paul says, Where the Spirit of Christ is there is liberty. Go to the garden and see that God gave man the freedom to choose for himself. Look at the Book of job and see that God gave Satan himself freedom to speak in the throne room and then recorded Satans words for everyone to be able to read. Of course when we choose to do as we please we make ourselves slaves to the one we obey. So we make ourselves slaves to sin. We only realize true freedom over sin and even death when we obey Christ and make Him our master. For only then are we free from sin and death and we are free to live forever. Lou

Freedom and Prosperity

The right to own land and be secure in our persons and property is one of the main differences between countries who have high poverty levels and those who don't. America is on a course where our governments are ignoring those rights. For the sake of our children, we cannot afford to be complacent. We the people of the U.S. must petition for a redress of grievances in whatever way we can against any existing laws or policies which violate the Constitution or any that will be forthcoming. You are as unBiblical as one can get

The Gospel does not call for political and religious freedom nor does it call for the material prosperity you like to boast about. Contrary to liberl theologians, the Gospel does not call for us to be poor either. What it does call upon us to do is to choose what is right , even if it means living in poverty. The Romans were demanding all make a sacrifice unto the Emporer, This who reused to do so could not join the guilds or to participate in the mainstream of society. Poverty became the result of those who steadfastly refuses to place Ceasar equal with Christ. Likewise, it is written that one in the darkest prison with Christ is more free than the richest noble in the largest house. Material prosperity and political freedom should not be the aim your gospel for Christ warns "You say we are rich but I say you are poor!"

  1. TAKE CARE YOUR CHILDREN ARE NOT MADE SLAVES
    Posted On: 01/21/08 03:03:49 PMAge 64, OH
Before Jesus was born to the virgin maid Mary and walk and teach on this earth He taught FREEDOM OF SPEECH, by example, right in the throne room of heaven. Read the Book of Job, which is maybe the oldest book in the Bible, about Satan being invited into heaven and then being invited to SPEAK. The words of Satan were a lie and God did not censor them but allowed Satan to speak and then even had Satan's words recorded in the Bible for all to read for themselves. The Holy Scriptures teach FREEDOM by example throughout all of the Books of the Bible. Men were never forced to choose what was right but always were given a choice or freedom. My focus is on The Lord Jesus Christ and NOT my rights but I am to stand for freedom because freedom shows the true nature of God Almighty. Any man who claims to follow Christ and does not take care of his own children is no better than an infidel. This is from the scriptures. How can a man claim to have taken care of his children if he feeds them but does not defend the freedom of his children and instead allows a government to make them slaves. Lou
