Needed: Unity, not compromise

By Janet Folger

I want to begin this article, which I write as an individual with all the free speech rights we enjoy as Americans, with an apology and a correction. In my column last week, I stated that Rep. Ron Paul was against the "Marriage Protection Act." He is not. What I meant to say was that he voted against the "Marriage Protection Amendment," which he did. I'm sorry for any confusion that may have resulted from this unintentional misstatement.

I have had people ask me to blast the leaders who have made outrageous endorsements. I have not. I have been asked to blast a prominent pro-life group that is making an endorsement today. I will not. What I will do is continue to differentiate where the candidates stand on the deal-breaker issues of the right to life and marriage.

We need unity – but what we don't need is compromise. The only thing this latest endorsement shows us is that our leaders are divided. The good news is that the grass roots are not. The two best indicators of where values voters stand are those who attended the Values Voter Presidential Debate and Summit where Gov. Mike Huckabee won both contests with more votes than all of the other candidates – combined. The 5-to-1 margin in both was clear – the leaders may be divided, but the values voters are not.

Our Declaration of Independence doesn't state that we are endowed by our Creator with the inalienable right to life unless states want to take it away. Yet, that is the position of Sen. Fred Thompson.

The Human Life Amendment that has been part of the GOP platform since 1980 has been the ultimate goal of the pro-life movement from the beginning. Calling abortion a "distracting issue," not only did Fred Thompson work to get rid of the GOP Platform in 1996, Thompson told Chris Russert on "Meet the Press" Nov. 4 that he opposes this basic goal:

MR. RUSSERT: Each state would make their own abortion laws.

MR. THOMPSON: Yeah. But, but, but to, to, to have an amendment compelling – going back even further than pre-Roe v. Wade, to have a constitutional amendment to do that, I do not think would be the way to go.

Thompson believes that if states want to kill children, that's perfectly fine with him.

MR. RUSSERT: Let me finish, because this is important. You're for allowing states to have pro-abortion rights, and you yourself, and I have 10 different statements from you, say that you would not ban abortion, it's a woman's right, and you would not ban it in the first trimester.

MR. THOMPSON: No, no. Well, you just said two different things here. You know, it's a complex issue concerning whether or not you're going to have a federal law, whether or not you're going to have a federal constitutional amendment, those kinds of things. Nobody's proposed a federal law on this.

Uh, there are three currently pending in this congressional session by two presidential candidates: Duncan Hunter's "Right to Life Act," H.R. 618 (which has 94 cosponsors), and Ron Paul's "Sanctity of Life Act of 2007," H.R. 1094 and H.R. 2597.

"It's a complex issue?" Let me clarify the abortion issue as simply as I can: "Live baby good; dead baby bad." That's it. And any means we can find to protect these kids, whether it's a Supreme Court decision declaring the personhood of the unborn child, a Human Life Amendment or a federal law, trumps all "states rights" views to the contrary. Abortion, like slavery, isn't a geographical issue.

MR. RUSSERT: You would allow abortion to be performed in states if chosen by states for people who think otherwise?

MR. THOMPSON: I do not think that you can have a, a, a law that would be effective and that would be the right thing to do, as I say, in terms of potentially – you can't have a law that cuts off an age group or something like that, which potentially would take young, young girls in extreme situations and say, basically, we're going to put them in jail to do that. I just don't think that that's the right thing to do. It cannot change the way I feel about it morally, but legally and practically, I've got to recognize that fact. It is a dilemma that I'm not totally comfortable with, but that's the best I can do in resolving it in my own mind.

Romney joins him in this (if you can trust his flip-flop on every major issue), while Giuliani doesn’t want to protect children at all. Oh, Thompson also cares more about states rights than he does about protecting marriage.

MR. RUSSERT: And also with gay marriage, according to the Associated Press: "Thompson favors a constitutional amendment that bars judges from legalizing gay marriage, but also leaves open the door for state legislatures to approve the practice." So if a state said, "We want to have gay marriages in our state," you would be OK with that?

MR. THOMPSON: Yes. This, this, this – the – marriage is between a man and a woman. Nobody ever thought that that was contested until recently, and we've had a couple judges in a couple states decide to turn all that on its head. So we've, we've had, again, a judge-created problem. I would support a constitutional amendment that addresses this judge-created problem. But at the end of – and, and say judges can't do that. But, at the end of the day, if a state legislature and a governor decide that that's what they want to do, yes, they should have, they, they should have the freedom to do what Fred Thompson thinks is a very bad idea.

He is joined in this "states rights" trump marriage by Giuliani, Romney, McCain and Paul.

We need a place of unity, not a place of compromise.

Our leaders are divided and on the wrong track. I call for all Christians to pray for them. Fear and finances have replaced faith and family values. A historic reminder: Gov. Mike Huckabee is exactly where Ronald Reagan was in 1979 in the polls and in finances. With everything up for grabs in this next election, NOW is the time for the uncompromising and unified grass roots to rise up and lead.

What needs to happen is for Congress to pass the Life of Conception Act declaring that life begins at conception and thereby making all fetuses citizens of the United States and therefore protected by the 14th Amendment. Roe V.Wade itself declares it is only making its decision assuming that life does not begin at conception. And declares that if it is ever determined that life does begin at conception, Roe v. Wade should collapse as the fetuses would then be protected as citizens under the 14th Amendment. Roe V. Wade was a terrible judicial decision on so many levels. But it did outline that itself should collapse if life begins at conception. Now in this day and age, it is a medical certainty that life begins at conception. Therefore, it is only logical, rational, moral, and necessary for Congress to declare life at conception and Roe V. Wade collapses and abortion outlawed because it is the murder of US citizens.

Mrs. Folger, you may say that we need "unity," but you are indeed asking for compromise. For me to support Gov. Huckabee, I would be required to compromise. I cannot support someone who was caught trying to steal (claiming tens of thousand dollars' worth of furniture, a la the Clintons); I cannot support someone who supports socialized health care for ANY group; I cannot support someone who has raised taxes on the people of his state--the much-beleaguered Arkansas, already in shambles after the Clintons--and at the same time raised spending! Gov. Huckabee supported the release of Wayne Dumond, a convicted rapist who used his newfound freedom to rape again. And, finally, he is fool enough to fall in line with the enviro-scaremongers. He may have decent values on life and family issues, but he's no conservative. When you ask me to support Gov. Huckabee, you are asking me to compromise. You can support him if you wish, but I won't. Sorry.--Mrs. Pilgrim

You stole the words right out of my mouth. I can not compromise with Mike Huckabee... I just can not. I can not stand for the mandated testing requirements he placed on homeschoolers, for the beuracratic Smart Start program he created for the schools in Arkansas, for the attempts at smoking bans, at food regulations, or his support of the S-CHIP and his initiation of a similar program in Arkansas, or anything of that sort. I am with Congressman Duncan Hunter. Michael Reagan said he is "everything conservatives want." He has never flip-flopped on a single issue. He supports a constitutional amendment to define life at conception, and has written a bill to do so several times as mentioned in this column. Hunter has been the most effective candidate on securing our borders. He had a fence built in San Diego, which tremendously stopped crime in San Diego, including illegal drug and human trafficking, and authored the bill for an 854 mile double border fence with border patrol in between, with a climb-proof barrier, which was signed into law. Duncan Hunter says that border security is national security. He will bring back high-paying jobs to our country which we lost because of bad trade deals with Red China and the rest of the world and cheating by Red China. While Duncan Hunter voted No on Most Favored Trade Status for Red China, he voted Yay for trade with Australia, because it was in our county's best interests. Duncan Hunter was chairman of the Armed Services Committee (when the Republicans had the majority), gave us ABS deployed in Alaska, and Hunter built up the defense that Bill Clinton tore down, and got equipment and weapons to protect our troops, and our country, Hunter served with the Army Rangers in Viet Nam, won a medal, and his son did two tour in Iraq, including Fallujah, and is now doing a third tour in Afghanistan. Once when the ACLU threatened a veteran's memorial because it displayed a crucifix, Duncan Hunter fought to protect it. Duncan Hunter wrote and passed the Parents' Empowerment Act that allowed parents to sue organizations that display pornographic material in ways easily accessible to children. Duncan Hunter fought hard so that students would be allowed to pray in public schools (just as Congress is allowed to), and is strongly pro-life (authored the personhood-at-conception bill; attended the pro-life march in D.C., etc.). He also supports a Constitutional Amendment to protect marriage. Duncan Hunter is the only candidate that has a conservative enough record to be successful in the upcoming election. Mike Huckabee has supported open border policies, the S-CHIP and similar programs he initiated in Arkansas, increased funding to public schools, federal funding for alternative fuel sources, and has even stated that he has "great respect for the Clintons." Not to mention the corruption charges that have been filed against him. Fred Thompson is against a Constitutional amendment for the unborn, has supported minimum wage increases, affirmative action, and has a similar voting record as John McCain on Immigration. Duncan Hunter is the conservative choice, and as Michael Reagan has said, 'everything conservatives want.' He has perfect ratings from the NRA, the National Right to Life, Americans for Better Immigration, the Eagle Forum, and Concerned Women For America. www.gohunter08.com www.dhgrassrevolt.wordpress.com

It is a sad state of affairs indeed, when we have to make a political definition of marriage as an institution between one man and one woman. Most states have laws against sodomy, or at least they used to. Murder is illegal in every state. People still murder people, and homosexuals still have affairs with each other. They may escape earthly consequences, but they will not escape God's judgment. Same sex marriages should be struck down on the basis that such an arrangement would automatically constitute sodomy. What needs to be gotten rid of are the lawyers who twist and manipulate the existing laws to the self serving ends of their clients. Political law needs to be replaced with God's common law. If this country can't be unified under God's common law, then this country is going to find itself unified under God's judgment similar to Sodom and Gomorrah. George Cancilla

The Law of the Land is not in the Declaration of Independce, but the Constitution. As long as abortion is viewed as a medical procedure, and not the killing of an unborn baby, the Constitution is silent on the issue, and therefore has no jurisdiction over the issue. At this point, the 10th Ammendment applies, and the issue of abortion is, indeed, to be determined by the individual states. Because of this, we in the Pro-Life movement need to educate people to see that the unborn baby is a living citizen of the United States, and as such, is under the protection of the Law. Until we can convince our lawmakers to do that, we are indeed limited by the Law. You do not fix bad laws with more bad laws.

Good point, and one that is so often missed. In the abortion debate, there IS only one issue: the humanity of the unborn. If the unborn is a person, then abortion is murder. If the unborn is not, then abortion is only a medical procedure--a very dangerous, usually damaging, sometimes fatal procedure, but just a procedure. This is pure and simple reasoning. All other matters are red herrings thrown up by people who don't want to deal with reality, and we should stop quibbling over irrelevancies.--Mrs. Pilgrim
