Is the Bible really from God? Part 1

Is the Bible really from God? Part 1

By Steve Cornell, http://thinkpoint.wordpress.com/

Sometimes it becomes necessary to restate what many considered obvious for years. Such a time has come regarding the origin and nature of the Bible. A number of popular authors and speakers (particularly in the Emergent Church) are unclear about their commitment to the Scripture as God’s Word. At the present moment in the life of the Church, there is an urgent need to reaffirm with deep conviction and clarity the divine origin of Scripture.

I. The Origin of the Bible:

The word “Bible” is derived from the Greek word biblos which means book, and is used in reference to the thirty-nine Old Testament and twenty-seven New Testament books of Judeo-Christian scripture. The sixty-six books of the Bible declare themselves to be God’s revelation to mankind. This truth may be understood through careful examination of key passages of Scripture and several important biblical terms. Further verification of the Divine origin of the Bible is established in Jesus’ view of it.

A. Key passages:

The Bible gives clear testimony to its own origin. The internal witness of Scripture demands a response from those who deny its divine origin. Consider the following witness concerning the origin of Scripture.

1. II Timothy 3:16-17

“All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” (NASB)

The apostle Paul had reminded Timothy of his previous training in the holy Scriptures from childhood (vv. 14-15). In v. 15, the apostle identified the Scriptures as “sacred” (i.e. holy). This places them in association with God’s own character (cf. Isa. 40:25; 57:15).

In the same verse, he indicated the central purpose of Scripture: “Which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.”

Christ is the central person of Scripture (Lk. 24:25-27; 24:46-47; John 5:39, 46; Acts 17:2-3) and the Scriptures have a certain innate ability to make one wise unto salvation. Having mentioned the Scriptures, the apostle takes the opportunity to restate two basic facts about all Scripture: a) their divine origin and b) their specific usefulness (vv. 16,17).

a. Their divine origin: (v. 16)

“All Scripture is God-breathed.” George W. Knight III wrote: “This is another way of saying that Scripture is God’s word (cf. Jesus’ use of ‘Scripture’ and ‘Word of God’ in apposition to each other in Jn. 10:35). The same thing is also said when the NT uses ‘God says’ for what is found in Scripture, whether the words were originally spoken by God or not and when Paul insists that the message he speaks consists of words taught by God’s Spirit (I Cor. 2:12-13; cf. Heb. 3:7; Acts 1:16; II Pet. 1:21)” (p. 447, N.I.G.T.C. Commentary on the Pastorals).

Old Testament Writings as statements from God

Matt. 19:4-5 w/Gen. 2:24

Acts 4:25 w/Ps. 2:1-2

Rom. 9:17 w/Ex. 9:16

Heb. 1:7 w/ Ps. 104:4

The reference to Scripture as God-breathed points to the origin and nature of what is written. ”All” Scripture reveals the extent of inspiration. The word “Scripture” may refer to the O.T. writings as in v. 15 “sacred writings” (i.e. holy scripture) or to an enlargement from that to include NT writings as well. It is significant that the apostle Peter includes the writings of Paul in the category of Scripture (cf. II Pet. 3:15-16).

Knight wrote that: “Paul insisted that his letters be read (I Thess. 5:27), exchanged (Col. 4:16), and obeyed (e.g. I Cor. 14:37; II Thess. 2:15) and identified the words he used to communicate the gospel message as ‘those taught by the Spirit’ (I Cor. 2:13). In this letter, Paul has praised Timothy for following his teaching (v. 10), has urged Timothy to continue in what he has learned from Paul (v.14), has commanded Timothy to retain ‘the standard of sound words’that he has heard from Paul (1:13), has commanded him to entrust what he has heard from Paul to faithful men so that they could teach others (2:2), and has insisted that Timothy handle accurately ‘the word of truth’ (2:15). After his remarks on ‘all Scripture’ he will urge Timothy to ‘preach the word’ (4:2), i.e., proclaim the apostolic message about which Paul has said so much in this letter” (P. 448, N.I.G.T.C., The Pastorals).

Notice the inclusion of other parts of the Bible under the title “Scripture”:

Luke 24:25-27, 44-45 — Moses, prophets, Psalms;

John 10:34-35 w/Ps. 82:6 — Law, Psalms;

II Peter 1:19-21 — prophecy.

b. Their specific usefulness (vv.16-17).

The usefulness of Scripture extends beyond “giving wisdom that leads to salvation” (v. 15). In vv. 16-17, the divine origin of Scripture points to a usefulness that invades all areas of life under God. The apostle reveals positive and negative uses in the following pattern:

Positive: Teaching (Instruction cf. Rom. 15:4; II Tim. 2:19)

Negative: Reproof (rebuking error cf. II Tim. 4:2; Titus 1:9)

Negative: Correction (setting right with reference to conduct)

Positive: Training in righteousness (right conduct in keeping with the teaching)

The New English Bible paraphrases this: “for teaching the truth, refuting error, for reformation of manner and discipline in right living.” Knight points out that the first pair deals with belief and the second with action. (Ibid., p. 449)

Note: By virtue of their origin, the Scriptures are the final standard for faith and practice. Every believer is to be subjected to the Authority of the Word of God which is powerful and able to judge the motives and intentions of the heart (Heb. 4:12). The authoritative place of the Scripture is especially seen in relation to the way the NT writers applied the OT to their readers (Lk. 16:29-31; Rom. 15:4;I Cor. 10; Heb. 12:5-6 w/Prov. 3:11-12). For more on the authority of the bible, see also: I Cor. 4:6; I Thess. 5:12; II Thess. 3:14; II Tim. 3:16-4:2; II Pet. 3:1-2.

Yet, as Dr. John Bright has written, “We do not worship a book. On the contrary, the sole legitimate object of worship, and the supreme authority to whom the Christian submits himself, is God — the God who, according to the Scripture, worked his redemptive purpose in Israel and, in the fullness of time, revealed himself in Jesus Christ.”

“The Christian’s God is the Creator and Lord of all things, and is the Lord also of Scripture. He existed before there was a Bible, and quite independently of it. He performed his work of creation when no man was there to record it. He gave his covenant law at Sinai, and that law had authority in Israel before the Pentateuch was written. He did his saving work in Jesus Christ, who came, did mighty works, died, and rose again, and this would be just as true had the Gospels never been penned.”

“The Bible, therefore, derives its authority from God; it does not have authority of itself, but rather by virtue of the God to whom it witnesses and who speaks in its pages. The God of the Bible is the Christians’ supreme authority in all senses of the word  True. Yet there is a practical sense in which this comes to much the same thing. What, after all, would the Christian know of his God, of Christ, and of the nature of the Christian faith apart from the Bible? Suppose for a moment the Bible had never been written or had been lost to us. What would we know of the history and faith of Israel? What would we know of Jesus, his life, his teachings, and the significance of his saving work as the early church understood it? The answer is: precious little” (p. 31, The Authority of the Old Testament).

2. II Peter 1:19-21

“And so we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts. But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God” (NASB).

The major theme of II Peter is the danger presented to the church by false teachers. In v. 19-21 the apostle identifies Scripture as the ultimate source of stability and confidence for the believer, as well as the needed antidote to heretical teaching (2:1). In v. 19 Peter encourages his readers to pay attention to the prophetic word (OT), which he identifies as a more certain source of revelation and guidance than even his own dramatic witness of Jesus’ transfiguration (v. 16-18). Peter goes on to provide the two-fold bases for the absolute reliability of Scripture’s teachings.

a. Negatively — The source of Scripture is not human (v. 20).

In verse 20, Peter was addressing the question of the origin of scriptural revelation. He asserted that it is not a matter of one’s (the prophets) own interpretation. In other words, the prophets did not “put their own spin” on what they saw or heard. They did not “interpret” with their own limited human minds what God said or showed them. Peter was probably countering the false teacher’s charge that the Scriptures were merely human myths, much like they discounted the report of Jesus’ transfiguration as “cleverly devised tales” (v. 16).

In v. 21a, Peter placed added emphasis on his denial of a merely human thought process in the formation of Scripture: “For no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will . .”

b. Positively — The source of Scripture is Divine (v. 21).

Although Peter acknowledged a human element in God’s revelation through the Scripture (“Men ……. spoke”), his focal point was the motivation and source of their speaking: “men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God”.

The apostle Peter taught that it was not the prophet’s will, but God’s Spirit actually “moving” (guiding, superintending) the human agents that brought about the writing of Scripture. Therefore, when men spoke, God spoke. Scripture is the communication of God’s truth to us, arriving through the agency of human writers and speakers who were so guided by the Holy Spirit that they reported exactly what God intended. (See Jer. 1:9; Num. 22:38).

To assert or imply that “the Bible is just a book written by men,” is to wrongly assume that there is no process by which a sovereign God could use fallible man to convey infallible truth. II Peter 1:21 reveals such a process, though some of the technical details remain a mystery to finite minds.

Hello, having read the article would it be unfair (because I would not want to be) to summarise it by writing that the bible is written by god because it says so (once all others peoples quotes in the article are removed), period? Kind regards Steve

Steve the simple answer is yes these are God's words written under His inspiration by human beings. I would however like to add 2 thoughts. Firstly, the scriptures are not the Word of God Jesus is (John 1v1-3 &14). Secondly, many have interpreted the scriptures and these human interpretations are not necessarily the way God sees it. We need to learn from the Holy Spirit (Spirit of truth) because Jesus said "I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but what things soever he shall hear, these shall he speak: and he shall declare unto you the things that are to come.He shall glorify me: for he shall take of mine, and shall declare it unto you." I hope that helps.

Amen brother; Gideon made an Ephod an they ended up bowing to the Ephod. They stumbled over the part of the creation that God used to speak to them. The Bible itself says to worship God only. Many call the Bible The Word of God and then worship it and follow it. We are to worship the Creator and not the creation. We are to worship and follow the Author of the Book and not the Book. The Book never shed blood for anyone but the Author did. We are to read the Book to find The Author and come to realize that there is no one or no thing that is WORTHY on this earth, or under this earth, or in heaven except for the LAMB that purchased men for God. I read the Bible because it was written by The Lamb. Lou - lounewton1347@yahoo.com

Not only do many call the Bible the word of God, God calls the Bible the word of God. Heb. 4:12. However, given your anti-trinitarianism, it is actually consistent for you to deny that the Bible is the word of God. Your theology and worldview is actually closer to Islam and Judaism than it is to Biblical Christianity. This is why you keep retreating into mysticism (The Spirit this, the Spirit that). If God is radically one, then congress between man and God is impossible. There is no point of contact, no commonality to mediate the relationship. When one cannot relate to God concretely, he falls into mysticism, pure subjectivity. In trinitarian theology, the Son is eternally generated by the Father by the Holy Spirit. The Son becomes incarnate to fulfill the will of the Father through the Spirit. God can become man. He can anthropomorphize. This triune God creates man in God's image. Man can perfectly image God. Man can theomorphize. Man cannot become divine, but man is structurally and functionally capable of perfectly imaging the likeness of God.(As a side note, the ability to so function is lost in the fall, restored and renewed in redemption). Once you have this foundation, Revelation no longer is a stretch. God can perfectly preserve His word through man. Because congress is possible between God and man. When we read the inscripturated word of the Bible, we read the true and objective word of the living God. Your anti-trinitarian worldview cannot accept this. I understand. At least you are being intellectually consistent. Unfortunately, you are also being heterodox.

Let us look at Heb 4:12 that you site as calling the bible the word of God. Heb 4:12 "12For the word of God is LIVING and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it JUDGES the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account." ARE YOU ACTUALLY SAYING THAT THE BIBLE IS ALIVE as this scripture says. Can the Book JUDGE THOUGHTS. Notice verse 13 continues the same thought but now refers to God and NOT a Book. The scripture here is referring to the person of God or the Author of the Book not just the Book. The Bible does use the term "Word of God" and "word of the Lord" many times but it is NOT REFERRING to a book. The word of the Lord spoken by the prophets are not words that God told them to speak but it is God Himself speaking through these men. When the Devil quoted scripture was it still the word of the Lord. When men quote scripture, is it still the Word of God. It is The Word of God when The Holy Spirit speaks through anyone of His choosing. If a man reads the Bible and seeks the Truth and God; then the Holy Spirit will speak to this man while he is reading the words on the page. This man has been spoken to by The Word of God. The Book never comes alive but God who is alive speaks to us while we read, if we seek him. All the credit and worship should go to the Holy Spirit of The Lord Jesus for we are to worship the Creator and NEVER the creation. As to your saying I am a heretic: I would say that every man is judged to be a heretic by one group or another. You are judged to be a heretic by the Catholics are you not.(i assume you are not Catholic) Martin Luther was judged to be a heretic by the church of his day. Johannes Kepler was judged to be a heretic by the Lutheran Church. But both of these men led a great revival. I am sure I do not deserve to be put in the same hallowed group as them. I am very thankful to The One and Only Judge of all creation The Lord Jesus Christ who is my JUDGE. Lou

Heb. 4:12 does not say the Holy Spirit is living and active (he is, but that is not the point of the verse) but the Word of God is living and active. No getting around it. The author of Hebrews is saying the Bible is alive. He is not saying the paper and ink are alive, he is saying that the concepts communicated in the paper and ink are God's concepts, his communication to man. God is alive and his word bears his attributes. God is his word. Deny his word, and you deny God. Neither I nor Hebrews says "the Book" judges. You are equivocating and misrepresenting. It is the Word of God which judges and that word is objectively revealed in the book. The book itself is just paper and ink. Destroying the book does not destroy God. But, the objective truths contained in the book are the very words of God, inseparable from God. Reject his word, and you reject God. Your error is that you have rejected the objective word of God for mysticism. And this does not place you on the same plane as great spiritual leaders. It just means that you are one of the many who refuse to place God's word over your word. If you can plunge God's word into subjectivity, then the issue is no longer "what is written" but instead "what does it mean to me". You are asserting your autonomy over Scripture.

The first half of your reply was fine but it just agreed with my point. The Bible is The Book and can not judge. There is One and Only One God and he is the Author of the Book. The last half of your reply is completely invalid for you accuse me of things that I DO NOT BELIEVE AND HAVE NOT SAID. The Bible is the exact letter for letter scriptures that were God breathed. There is NOT ONE LETTER of the Book that is wrong in the Greek. This has been even proven mathematically. The mathematic proof is not needed by some but it is very useful to a unbeliever for they do not know that the Bible is the Holy Scriptures. I do not see the love of Jesus in your reply. Jesus is my Only Hope and I put no trust in anyone or anything but Him. I spend many hours everyday studying the scriptures that you say I have no respect for. Lou

Look right on The Book. The title of the Book is THE BIBLE which means THE BOOK. It is NOT called THE WORD OF GOD. But the Holy scriptures call Jesus THE WORD OF GOD. Would you call the scriptures GOD,JESUS, THE LORD,THE CREATOR,OR THE SAVIOR. I hope not, I sure would not. Jesus alone is my Creator, my Lord, My Savior. The Holy scriptures tell us to Worship the Creator and not the creation. The Bible is part of His creation. The Bible is not The Way but Jesus is The Way. I will not call part of creation by the same term that is the Name of God Almighty. Lou

If you are interested "Google" Ivan Panin and read how this Russian mathematician, who was an atheist when he started this work, set out to prove the Bible was not written by God. He had already proved that all of creation was full of mathematical patterns, and received many awards for his discoveries. In his work he proved to himself that the Bible could only be the work of God Almighty. He received a Nobel prize for his work. Lou

No it would not be unfair to say so. Incomplete, but not unfair. God has given us a book. How do we know he has given us a book? He has told us. And his word is proof par excellance. But that is not all he tells us. He tells us that his creatures know his voice. They either heed or suppress that knowledge. If they heed, they are blessed, if they suppress, they are cursed and life falls apart for them. So, yes, God tells us that the Bible is his word. He does not bother to try to prove this to us by deductive or inductive proofs. He proves it to us immediately (we know it is true) and existentially (our response to his word determines blessing and cursing). Now, you may not like the way he does this, but your likes and dislikes do not effect reality. And, God is satisfied that his way is sufficient for man.

If I claim to be an auto mechanic, would you let me work on your car or would you want to substantiate my claim first? The claim isn't enough but nor is it "automatically" wrong because I made it about myself. The self-witness of the bible is overwhelmingly clear. It puts the critic in the seat of response. To simply say we can't rely on self-testimony is not adequate. Alternatively one might say, "Let's face it, the Bible is just a book produced by man!" To this, I respond with several points: 1. Wherever you got that idea you didn't get it from the Bible itself. So on what basis do you take this position? 2. What I think you mean is that although the Bible claims to be a book from God you don't believe it. You think it's only the production of man. Defend your position. 3. Most people are not aware of the Bible's pervasive or overwhelming witness to its own authority as God's word. 4. We grant that if the Bible made no such claim to be the written word of God, it would be foolish for us to make the claim. 5. But, since it overwhelmingly makes such a claim, we neither want to accept nor reject it without objective consideration. 6. If I claim to be a surgeon I think you would want some evidence before you let me cut you open, right? The claim is not enough, it must be substantiated. 7. What is so distinguishing about the Bible is its overwhelming witness to its own authority as God's word. 8. This witness involves three categories: a. Direct speech by God to men at the Baptism of Christ. b. God's words spoken by men "Thus says the Lord..." c. God's words written, usually through prophets and apostles One way to see this is as follows: Premise A: The Bible is the infallible Word of God. Premise B: On the basis of this reliable document, we have sufficient evidence to believe confidently that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Premise C: Jesus Christ, being the Son of God, is an infallible authority. Premise D: Jesus Christ teaches that the Bible is more than generally trustworthy; it is the very Word of God (Lk. 16:1;John 10:35;Matt. 5:17-18;Matt. 15:4). Premise E: The Word, in that it comes from God, is utterly trustworthy because God is utterly trustworthy. Conclusion: On the basis of the infallible authority of Jesus Christ, the Church believes the Bible to be utterly trustworthy, i.e. infallible. (From: God’s Inerrant Word, John W. Montgomery, ed., pp. 246 - 249) Hope this helps.

THE MYSTERY OF BEING CARRIED ALONG BY THE HOLY SPIRIT
Posted On: 11/06/07 01:26:59 PM Age 64, OH
Very good article Steve. I would like to comment on your statement about the details remain a mystery to finite minds. You are certainly correct in quoting the Holy Spirit in Peter," For no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will". The human will is NOT involved in the prophecy made by the Holy Spirit through any man. The human will is involved in the act of the prophet giving his will to the Holy Spirit. But if the prophet sincerely gives himself to God then he belongs to God Almighty and not to himself. God does not refuse his gift but takes this man unto Himself. When the prophet then continues to give himself to the Holy Spirit; the Holy Spirit then speaks from within the man. But it is the Holy Spirit speaking and not the man. The prophet will speak and make no conscience decision to speak. The prophet will speak words through his own lips but they DO NOT PASS through his own mind. He will speak things that he did not know. While these words are coming out of him, he will be amazed and think "this is really good" and be edified himself by his speaking. But you see it is NOT the man speaking but the Holy Spirit who is within the man who speaks. When The Holy Spirit speaks He always has complete authority. The Bible has NO authority for the Bible itself says "ALL authority has been given to Jesus Christ". But the Holy Spirit of Jesus speaks when we seek Him in the scriptures. And the Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ has all authority. The Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ will never lie or contradict Himself. If any man claims to speak for the Holy Spirit he is wrong. But if a man speaks and says it was not him but the Holy Spirit speaking; then care must be taken for he could be correct. Men even read the Bible, words spoken by the Holy Spirit, and one mans interpretation differs from another. But The Holy Spirit does not contradict himself so one is wrong. Man can not be sure that he is right by reading the scripture or listening to a man who claims it is the Holy Spirit speaking. For it could BE the Holy Spirit and a man who is NOT given to God in the situation will still misunderstand. Right understanding does not come from reading scripture or listening to prophecy; but right understand is a gift from God to a man who is given to The Lord Jesus Christ. Lou

I agree with what you have said but am not sure if this is what was presented in the article. The article elevates scripture to the Word of God (Jesus is the Word of God - John 1) and states that Right understanding does come from reading scripture or listening to prophecy.

Jesus told the pharisees in John 5:39 "You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me," - They studied the scriptures diligently and did not find eternal life. If they would have sought for their Creator they would have found eternal life. Instead of looking TO the Book the should have looked IN the Book for the Lord Himself to speak to them. The Author of the Book is the Author and finisher of my life. Lou - lounewton1347@yahoo.com
