Way of Life’s Church News Notes reports that Focus on the Family is scheduled to join the apostasy party at the Crystal Cathedral in January.
“H. B. London of Focus on the Family is scheduled to join hands with heretic Robert Schuller in a “Rethink” conference at the Crystal Cathedral in January 2008. The conference will bring together “30 influential thinkers” to “deliver cutting edge ideas about the ever-changing world.” The 2,500 conference attendees are expected to be joined by tens of thousands of simulcast viewers. Speakers include Robert Schuller; who has redefined the gospel according to his heretical self-esteem theology; Chuck Colson one of the founders of Evangelicals and Catholics Together; Dan Kimball and Erwin McManus of the deeply unscriptural Emerging Church movement; H.B. London, Jr. of Focus on the Family; Kay Warren, wife the Purpose Driven Life guru; Rupert Murdoch, chairman of News Corporation and purveyor of pornography; Larry King, an agnostic; Lee Strobel, George Barna, John Townsend, Gary Smalley, Jay Sekulow, and Henry Cloud. Rethink conference speaker McManus says, “We need to know where things are going so we can get there first” (www.rethinkconference.com).
In fact, the Bible believer knows exactly where things are going and how things will turn out, and he is not dependent upon the “insights” of the unregenerate and of false teachers. Beware, friends, these are the blind leading the blind.”

MEN TALKING ABOUT THEIR OPINIONS WILL SOLVE NOTHING

Men meeting to talk about their ideas will NEVER SOLVE ANYTHING. This is NOT THE SOLUTION BUT IT IS THE PROBLEM. Insanity is thinking you can continue to do the same thing and get a different result. Men following their own idea of what is right is the problem not the solution. Until the people of this nation humbles them self and seek the Truth with all of their hearts and soul; their will be no solution to the problem. The only solution is for men to realize their pitiful state and turn to The One and Only True God Almighty. Lou Click here to reply to this post

In order to debate and "rethink" there must be more than one person on a platform. I don't think that by sharing a platform or stage amongst others means that you are aligning yourself with what they say. I've shared the same space with criminals.. I'm not a criminal. I think that we do have to be careful when it comes to ecumenical teachings. However, you cannot shed light on darkness if you turn your back on those that are in error.
When you wrote this article did you contact Focus on the Family for a statement or some sort of explanation?
No, we must not be "of the world" but we are "in the world" and we must shine light wherever we are allowed. Click here to reply to this post

You must believe they're handing out muzzles to the Christian speakers who will be at the conference.
"Please don't mention the Gospel of Jesus, Mr. Colson, Mr. London and Mr. Strobel! We're only interested in the Gospel of Larry King."
I personally can't imagine a better opportunity than to put heavyweight Christian evangelists and teachers on the same platform as some heavyweight heathen!
The churches who are hosting this simulcast have a great opportunity to bring people thru their doors and evangelize. Click here to reply to this post

Good for Schleuter! She is right on the money with her assesment of things.
One other thing that it reeks to me of is a politically motivated gathering. Larry King is married to a Mormon (who happens to be my second cousin!) Jay Sekulow has announced his support for Romney for 08, I hear that Focus on the Family supposedly supports Romney (I hope it's not true!), and I heard a quote by Ralph Reed, who seems to be close to Focus, stating that he didn't see why a "Christian" should have a problem in voting for Romney. Add to this the spouse of Purpose Driven Warren, who appeared on Larry King Live and remained silent when King said that the Mormons have been "spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ for many years", despite Mormonism's belief in 3 gods, and not believing that Jesus is God. Mormonism's connection to Freemasonry (Joseph Smith was a Freemason), makes perfect sense to those whose view of "Christianity" contains a Heinz 57 mentality. Add to that the snub by FRC Values Voter debates' snub of Alan Keyes, yet invitations were sent out to Hillary, Guiliani, Romney, etc., yet the snub by FRC of Alan Keyes who, despite staffers calling to ask if their invitation had been "lost", wondering why he was totally excluded despite Fred Thompson's entering the race late who was invited! (see AlanKeyesforpresident.com)
Let's not forget Rick Warren who is or formerly was a Southern Baptist--the Southern Baptist, though many Christians, yet they have not taken a strong stance, rather definite stance regarding the compromise of allowing Freemasons to join their church without renouncing Freemasonry which does worship Satan.
I think Ingrid is correct to question the company one keeps.

I am not the same 42 year old from MN already posted.
It seems to me this conference is a hodgepodge of thinkers. Why shouldn't the good ones be included with the bad.
The whole conference does seem pointless to me. We should be praying to the Holy Spirit for direction, not to conferences.
On the other hand, it is a free country. What is wrong with a conference with a hodgepodge of Christians. I am glad that so many great evangelical leaders have been included. Hopefully they will help keep it focused on Christ.
Why is it bad for Christians to speak at conferences with others? We should share platforms everywhere we can. We should even preach in other religion buildings if we can. We are called in the Great Commission to go into all the world.
I do agree that we should not let heretics speak in our churches, but let us speak any and everywhere invited. Click here to reply to this post

After writing this article, does this mean you won't be watching the satellite telecast and reviewing the videos?

I'm not sure where you saw any venom in this report. By the way Ingrid is simply quoting a news report as far as I can see from the quotation marks. Maybe Schuller should be concerned about his association with Focus On The Family. Dobson has probably led more people away from the Bible and into psychology than Schuller, Jr. Of course if we point out what these people believe and how they are unBiblical we are being venomous. I agree with other posters that if you have the opportunity to present the gospel truth at a conference then you might accomplish something good. How often does that happen? I know Ray Comfort spoke to a meeting of atheists and gave an uncompromising gospel presentation. I doubt this is anything of the kind. This certainly has the appearance of a group of like minded people who are getting together to see how to promote their mutual agenda. Click here to reply to this post

I know I could be wrong in my interpretation of this article, but here is my quick thought: Of the names listed in the article, I agree that there are some who call themselves Christian, yet teach a different Gospel. However, of the evangelicals that I see listed, is it wrong for them to p[articipate in a conference that is designed to talk about how our society is changing, and the methods that we can use to reach the lost?
Chuck Colson: has a better grip on Christianity than many Christian I know. So he came out of the catholic background, does that make it impossible for him to be a Christian and have a good perspective on society?
H.B. London, Jr. of Focus on the Family; by presenting his observations on how society is changing at this conference makes him a heretic? Be very careful about calling someone names for the sake of "shock value".
Kay Warren, wife the Purpose Driven Life guru; By being married to Rick Warren, that makes her a heretic? Thin ice you're wlaking on.
Lee Strobel, I'd strongly advise you to read his latest book. You will see, and hear, how strongly he is grounded in the Christian faith.
George Barna, He has the best data on the thoughts and ideas that influence Christian society, so why is it wrong for him to speak and present his data at this conference?
John Townsend, Gary Smalley, Jay Sekulow. All three of these men are on the front lines, fighting for justice for you & I. Biblical understanding can come from listening to these guys, and the topical insights each one of them brings to the table.
When I read this article, my reaction was as if you were saying that anyone that steps foot into the Crystal Cathedral "must be a heretic", and should be shunned by any good Christian that has any sense about them whatsoever. I disagree. Click here to reply to this post

I agree fully with your post. If a bible thumper is invited to preach in the lion's den- he should go! However, the other side of the coin is that we should not allow a liberal thinker to preach in a fundamental church. That would allow the wolf into the hen house. Basically, when able, cast seed in others gardens, and keep the weeds out of your own. John Click here to reply to this post

It concerns me that so many people are quick to leap to the defense of their favorite icons. I suppose we can't help that; it's in our nature. The fact is, though, that we should consider the rightness or wrongness of a person's actions independently of his identity. And let's be frank, brethren: if one goes to a conference such as this in this day and age, he is very likely to be in agreement with its purposes and message. So please think on this, and remain faithful to Christ rather than to mere men.--Mrs. Pilgrim Click here to reply to this post

I disagree totally with the conference but I think it is wise for us to bring all the "salt" we can in the form of leadership. If Christian's are allowed to witness and shape things for Jesus Christ (or probably more likely try to stop something that would be used for evil) I think it isn't wise to refuse to go. This is especially true if that is what God has called them to do. But I THINK IT IS CRUCIAL THAT WE ASK PEOPLE TO PRAY AND THAT WE PRAY AND POSSIBLY FAST OURSELVES. Click here to reply to this post
