Apparently Joel Osteen is taking some heat for his new book, Become a Better You. A Christian author who recently wrote about Osteen’s rise to glory sent out a press release nationwide yesterday with the headline, “Christian Author Defends Joel Osteen”. Here’s what the author had to say.
As critics and bloggers take shots at Joel Osteen and his new book this week, Richard Young, who wrote “The Rise of Lakewood Church and Joel Osteen,” came to his defense on Wednesday.
“Critics say Osteen lacks biblical references in his books and claim that he preaches prosperity gospel,” said Young. “However, I found nearly 130 scriptural references in ‘Become a Better You,’ Osteen’s newest book.”
Young, who studied Osteen extensively while writing his book about the megachurch pastor, disagrees with individuals who say Osteen isn’t preaching the word of God and that his ministry isn’t orthodox.
“Joel uses the Scriptures as a path to Godly living just like pastors have for centuries. He encourages people to live better lives through faith in God and following Biblical principles,” said Young. “Although not everyone may agree with his style, he has successfully brought God’s presence into the lives of thousands of people through his ministry and books. Few individuals have been as successful as Joel in spreading God’s word.”
Young uses Sunday’s interview on “60 Minutes” as an example of how the mainstream media and some theologians ridicule Osteen.
“Journalist Bryan Pitts asked every possible question he could to trick Osteen into saying something that would discredit him as a man of God. Pitts repeatedly pointed to the lack of crosses and religious symbols inside Lakewood Church and questioned why Osteen called himself a life coach and motivator,” commented Young. “In addition, ‘60 Minutes’ interviewed Dr. Michael Horton. Horton, a professor at Westminster Seminary California, called Osteen a heretic and ridiculed his ministry. I don’t understand what Joel Osteen does that is so bad that a seminary professor has to condemn him on national television.”
Osteen’s first book, “Your Best Life Now,” was a New York Times bestseller. Young believes “Become a Better You” will be equally successful despite Osteen detractors.
“Joel understands today’s culture and that messages of damnation and of a vengeful God no longer resonate with an overstressed society that already believes they are living in Hell daily,” said Young. “Instead, Joel tells people that if they draw closer to God that thier lives will be better. This is a message that our society is eager to embrace. Who doesn’t seek a fuller life on earth?”
About Richard Young Richard Young, a Christian author, church consultant and speaker, has spent close to 20 years researching various churches across the country, including some of the most prominent megachurches in America.
His research and travels inspired him to write the recently released “Rise of Lakewood and Joel Osteen.” Young’s next book, which examines the life and ministry of T.D. Jakes, will be released in early 2008. Jakes is the pastor of The Potter’s House, a primarily African-American non-denominational megachurch in Dallas.
My response: Mr. Young, Osteen’s using 130 Scriptures doesn’t mean a thing when it comes to biblical orthodoxy. Satan’s greatest successes have involved the rise of leaders who copiously quote the Scriptures to make their own heretical points. Scripture is not to be treated as a source for proof texts for false teaching. Osteen has no biblical defense for his ‘best life now’, ‘God wants you to be a success’ message. In fact, Osteen’s message runs counter to Christ’s clear command that we deny ourselves, take up our crosses and follow Him. There is no personal cross in Osteen’s message to the world, only a better, more effective ME. He has people raise a Bible over their heads at the start of his messages to assure everyone that he believes the Word of God. Then he proceeds to completely contradict the very Word he claims to follow. We are here on this planet for God’s glory, not our own. God does not want us on a journey of deeper “self-discovery” as Osteen claims in his new book. He wants us to go deeper and deeper into the knowledge of His Son, Jesus Christ. We are to decrease and Christ must increase in our lives. This biblical framework runs counter to everything that Osteen represents. Your press release only confirms in my mind, Mr. Young, that Joel Osteen needs to repent of his false teaching and his man-centered gospel and stop misleading the millions of people who follow his ministry. He is a false teacher and the consequences are eternal.

Joel Osteen's "damnation clumbereth not" (2 Pet. 2:1-3). Anyone who thinks Joel Osteen is true to God (of God) is either a young believer who doesn't know God's Word, or, completely deluded and without the knowledge of God - a lack for which His own people are destroyed (Hos. 4:6; Matt. 22:29). In defending such a wolf as Osteen, Richard Young has made himself partaker of the ungodly deeds of this deceiver and will suffer the same judgment if he doesn't repent (2 John 10-11). Jer. 23; Ezek. 34; Jude 1

Is Joel Olsteen a false teacher???? Definitly not but what I do know is this. I have watched and seen Joel many times and he doesn't come across that way he does preach the gospel and does put Christ in the center of his messages, why the big uproar. Ingrid you and others like you are so very hipocritical I don't see christ at the center of your messages. For example you read a lot of stuff on this web site about christains changing goverment and getting involved in politics so we the "rightous" can win the culture war. Now in ephisians we are told in every part of our life to be christ like so getting involved in these things is definitly not christ like. Jesus never tried to win the culture war, he never tried to change the politics of his day but so many of us christains are consumed with getting involved in politics and winning the culture war which are not gospel centered ideas, I never see any articles on that on this website but we rip a man who has brought thousands to Jesus. If you say Joel Olsteen is so bad than so are all these so called christain politicians and activists for making worldly politics and ambigous issues of the kingdom of the world gospel centered. If Joel Olsteen is so bad than these kind of christains are just as bad our worse, but lets see an article about that on this website. I doubt it Click here to reply to this post

"A man who has brought thousands to Jesus"???? WHO ARE YOU TRYING TO KID? He has brought millions to worship at the altar of self and not to Jesus Christ. Osteen is not preaching to original Gospel as we have on record and is therefore "ACCURSED!" (Gal. 1:6-9) Ingrid and all who expose this smiling wolf are operating in the genuine love of God as they are jealous for His holy name and Gospel and for the safe entrance of His sheep into eternal glory. Anyone who comes to the defence of wolves like Osteen will be partaker of his evil deeds and the eternal fire which will be his eternal place of reward (2 Pet. 2:1-3; 2 John 10-11). If Joel Osteen is not a deceiver then who is? what else will it take? Anyone who is in the Word clearly sees what Osteen purposesly leaves out - Joel is "accursed" in God's eyes for teaching "another gospel" (Gal. 1:6-9). http://www.safeguardyoursoul.com/html/joel_osteen_exposed.html Click here to reply to this post

Dear brother; Jesus said,13"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it." -- Jesus was not a liar or incompetent. What He said was true and always will be true. You can tell the way to life because it is NARROW and FEW find it. The way to destruction is always easy to tell also. The way is BROAD and MANY are on that path. I hear Osteen's church is the LARGEST in the nation and I have heard him preach a mighty broad path to The Lord Jesus Christ. To the person that said, "I think God is big enough to take care of people we think are false teachers. HE DOESN'T NEED OUR HELP IN THAT, the world lives with arguing and fighting everyday they don't need it from the Christians too."
God has this to say about those who represent Him: "He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has BEEN taught, so that he can encourage others by SOUND doctrine and REFUTE those who oppose it. Titus 1:0 That is only one of MANY Scriptures where GOD himself has instructed us to confront false teachers that claim to speak for Him.
These are scary times folks when "Christians" can't even recognize a false teacher and worse than that, think it's more christian to leave them alone because everyone should get along! wow.
I would love to hear what the Apostle Paul would say to all the rich tv evangelists. The LAST thing on the mind of a true Ambassador of Christ would be "their best life NOW"!
Let us get back to the business of making disciples. The old fashioned true disciples, that long to die to self in order to follow CHRIST, not the new and improved version that produces self centered individuals that love to hear they DESERVE to follow their lusts and Jesus is more than willing to deliver the goods.
If Joel would speak the truth of the Scriptures... his church would empty out faster than you can say, "The Champion in Me".

I don't have to read the whole book to understand Osteen' teaching. First chapter and second chapter bassicaly the same. It put emphasize on "I" and "Me". And it's all bassicaly the same through the last chapter.
I went to book store the other day, next to Joel Osteen's book was actually John Piper's Book called "What Jesus Desire From The World".. One book (Osteen book) is talking about what we DEMAND from God and the other talk about what God DEMAND from us as body of believers.
Most of the bible verse that he quotes was taking out of context. And if you watch his show and listen to his shermon, he's rarely quoting bible scriptures. I guess my message to Osteen is, there are 66 books of the bible, if he doesn't preach the real thing,as a leader of a church God held him accountable for those people that go to his church. If he supposedly said that hell is a real thing than he should preach it to his pulpit. Click here to reply to this post

I am constantly amused at the holier than thou attitude of modern day Pharisees. People call Joel Osteen greedy and a "prosperity preacher" in a web site surrounded by ads asking the readers to buy products. Products I assume will make the authors money. How amazing to say others are after money next to an ad that says, Buy my DVD and I will throw in a FREE worksheet, a piece of paper! WOW! Your generosity is amazing! The most ironic are the ads asking people to come to Branson to make money! Someone address these issues if you will with your Pharisaical attitude. Show me a single verse in the book taken out of context. If Joel uses verses you say even the devil uses verses, if he doesn't use verses you say, he doesn't teach the Bible. The man can not win. The other issue is the number of people he leads in the sinner's prayer not just every week in Houston, but in arenas all over the country.
Matt 7:3-5 3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? 4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? 5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.

Here is also something that Jesus said, 13"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it." - It seems to me that Jesus can not lie and he knows the future as well as the past. So the way to life should be easy to tell; it is NARROW and FEW are on it. The way to destruction is also easy to tell; it is BROAD and MANY are on it. So do you know that money is being made on the things "advertised" here? How much do they make? Keep defending the indefensible as much as you like, it doesn't change the clear truth. All you have to do is watch Osteen perform and it's obvious what his message is. You don't have to do an indepth study, he makes it very plain. If it isn't what Ingrid has stated then he can easily disprove it by preaching a clear gospel message. One that includes man's sin and it's punishment - and just how horrible both of those are. One that includes a clear presentation of Who Jesus is and what His death accomplished - salvation from a horrifying eternal damnation and the ability to live pleasing to Him. One that makes people uncomfortable the way they are, indeed one that offends them in their sin and disobedience. One that calls people to count the cost, not to see what they can gain. These are some things that would be refreshing to hear from him, but I don't expect to see it any time soon. It just doesn't sell in our self-centered culture. He'd lose his audience. I always find it so interesting when prosperity preachers and those who have drifted from the Bible and Gospel message seem to say the same thing- People don't want to hear about hell, or that they're sinners because they will feel bad etc. First of all, Jesus talked about hell just about more than he talked about anything else. As for not wanting to feel bad about being told you're a sinner- well, I'll put it this way- I wouldn't want to be told I have cancer either- but I'd rather be told the truth so I can get life saving treatment, than tho be told a lie- just so I could feel better and be happy as I die. Thre are no perfect pastors, that may be true, but the main Pastor duties are to teach the flock the True Word of the Bible- no matter how offensive it may seem to be. There's nothing wrong with promoting financial prosperity- but to give people hope in money instead of saving grace is a sin, and I pray that all these pastors who put money before God will come to see their sin before it's too late. Hi,
I personally like the kid. And as to that last post...the "Jesus wants you to be miserable one." Good luck.
Sure there's a cross to bear, and some of the detractors poasting here are evidently part of the one that Joel must bear with. I hope they all deal with their jealousy "log" before they nitpick at Joel's success.
One reason the kingdom is in such disarray is we Christians can't stand it when someone else is successful...especially if we're unsuccessfully faithful. I'm a pastor. Small churches. I love them. But I like what Joel's doing and I wish the Lord was using me to reach as many for Christ as Joel is reaching.
Take care all

"Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ." (Colossians 2:8). It does not matter if the philosophy is good, right, morally excellent, and praiseworthy. It does not matter how well intentioned, meaningful, or helpful the message is. It does not matter how necessary we think the worldly element to be, or how important it is to society in general. If these things are NOT "after Christ"--that is, if they are not of Him, through Him, and unto Him; then they are worthless as far as God's Purpose is concerned, and must be discarded.
