The Potty Driven Life

The Potty Driven Life

Mainstream evangelicalism is literally in the toilet.

Christ’s Family Church of Hastings, Minnesota is now using the bathroom as a way to reach out to lost souls.  http://cfc.ccbchurch.com/app/

“Our men’s room (decorated in race car motif) gives members a reason to invite people to church. That is what Christ Family Church is all about; reaching those who have become disenchanted with religion but are searching for a relationship with Jesus Christ.”

That’s right.  Toilet evangelism.

Somehow, a zoomy bathroom is supposed to save sinful souls.  Even the local newspaper wrote an article titled, “Come for the Bathroom, Stay for the Service.”  We have moved from John the Baptist proclaiming truth in the wilderness, to using a testosterone designed men’s room to lure people to a building.  While there is nothing wrong with a nifty water closet, there is plenty wrong with using it to attract people to Jesus.

We implore people to come to the Savior, not come for the bathroom.  We promote Jesus, not the amenities.  Church is for Christians, not curiosity seekers.  We win them to the Lord, not by being hip.  Evangelism is to be done by church members, not the church bathroom.

How could we sink so low?

It all started with money.  The prosperity Gospel promised, “Come to Jesus and you will be wealthy.”  Then we promised health.  “Come to Jesus and you will be healthy.”

Well that was just too “un-Biblical” for a new breed of evangelicals.  We would never use cash and a pain-free life to bait people to “make a decision for Jesus.”

Instead, we decided to uncover people’s emotional needs and dangle those as a draw card to salvation.   Self-esteem, loneliness, depression, discontentment, emotional scars, disobedient children, wayward spouses, low social status, low employment status, lack of purpose, a wayward golf swing.  Gotta problem?  Ask Jesus into your heart.

The seeker sensitive/felt needs movement was in business.  And business was good.

But, it never takes long for man to grow weary of man-made methods.  Just like every other offer from the world-system, it must continually be upgraded and repainted lest we grow bored.   So a new, younger breed of evangelicals is cropping up offering to feed the flesh in an effort to attract people to their quarter million dollar sound systems.

Is your sex life crappy (That’s their word, not mine)?  Then come to our church and we will help you have the “best sex ever.”  http://www.mycrappysexlife.com/   Churches around the country are using the latest “sermon in a box” series, complete with billboards, post-cards and website design with two pair of feet wrapped up in the sheets, all in an effort to get people to visit their church with the promise to put a little zing into their nap time.

You got it.  Come to Jesus, and your sex life will never be the same.

Just when you think, “That’s it, we have turned the Savior into a sex-enhancement tool; it can’t get worse than that.”  Oh yes it can.

Christ’s Family Church has turned Jesus into a bathroom enhancement tool.  If your loved one does not have a desire to be wealthy, healthy or frisky…then invite them to church so they can have a unique experience while taking care of bodily functions.

What twisted hermeneutic was used to rationalize potty proselytism?

“Part of the mission statement at Christ Family Church is to ‘proclaim God’s reconciling love through Jesus Christ to neighbors, co-workers and friends.’  (How does that work? Come to Jesus and be regular?) The men’s room is just one of the many ways this church is trying to accomplish this mission (Nothing says “substitutionary atonement” like a groovy bathroom). As Pastor Paris likes to say: “We are willing to go to any lengths, use any means necessary, to bring people closer to Christ.”  (Have you ever seen I Cor. 9 more twisted?)

“Scott Girnau thought it would be a great way to reach out to people who wouldn’t normally be reached (You know, bashful bladder types). Stereotypes need to be broken about churches (That dreadful stereotype that we Christians just don’t know how to go to the bathroom right). Too many people feel like they don’t belong (Nothing says “welcome” like a kitschy toidy). Our hope is that when a person may not necessarily feel welcome, he can walk into the bathroom and say ‘cool.’”

Wow, who knew?  Just gussy up your church bathroom and make sure your guests have a steamy cup of coffee to inspire them to use the facilities (Hey, maybe the church Starbucks makes sense after all), and they are just one step closer to saying the prayer and really, really meaning it.

What is the saddest part of all this?

  1. Many evangelicals no longer believe that Scripture is sufficient.  They need tools to enhance the Gospel to get regular attenders.
  2. They clearly have no idea what the Gospel is.

We have gone as low as we can go.  Or have we?

I am so RELIEVED. When I lived in Hastings I thought Christ's Family was probably a cult. Now I see that it's just a regular Evangelical congregation.

Just found this article and I gotta say, "Right On!" I'm surprised none of the feedback has mentioned the implications of a church bathroom (or hey, even a church function!) associating with NASCAR or any professional sport for that matter. Would it be okay to decorate the ladies room with movie posters? how about photos of soap opera stars? Vogue Magazine covers? ...hmmmm. Why are churches trying to be cool?? Doesn't God grow churches, not people? Or does the coolest church get the prize? *sigh*

I disagree with the statement in the article above that I quote, "Church is for Christians, not curiosity seekers. We win them to the Lord, not by being hip." If this is the case then Jesus had no business teaching the sinners, He should have only taught to the 'righteous.' I sometimes wonder if God would rather have people in His house anyway they can get there or not at all (or should people be in church on man's terms?). Even if they only hear one smidgen of the word, it is a seed planted. No one has a right to say who church is for. Even if one curiosity seeker is saved, it will have been worth it. On another note, it takes all kinds to witness to people. I believe that often times, it is not the Word that people reject but the one preaching the Word. I imagine God making all mankind different is a good thing so that there will always be someone that can be related to. One more thing I would like to add is that churches use all kinds of attractions to draw people to hear the word whether it is well-known guests, worship groups and mother/daughter teas among numerous other things. Sometimes I wish people would let others be and show Christ-like love regardless of why someone is in church. Does it really matter? What harm is done? I seriously have doubts that anyone would come to the service EVERY week because of the bathroom. To get them in one time albeit curiosity or otherwise is better than none and if they decide to return for other reasons than all the better!

Maybe it would make you holier than thou crowd happy if the church had put in an outhouse.

I think the article is hilarious! Your reaction to something like this is so indicative of the state of so many of our churches. Spending time criticizing something like how a church does the mens room! Come on! What difference does it make how creative they get??? Sounds like they were using many left overs from the men of the church, then just creating something that would be "attractive". No problem by me if Christ's Family Church wants to do this. In fact, I applaude their effort. I really believe Christ would be pleased. It also seems clear from their website that they are Christ centered and Biblical in their ministry - NOT potty focused! "They were all wrong"
Posted On: 03/17/07 01:53:02 PM Age 30, IA
"THEY WERE ALL WRONG" Author Unknown: A good many years ago, a preacher went into a town where there was no new testament church. He preached in a house of worship and then in the market place of the city. Soon the religious leaders of the city heard him and invited him to address them. They thought if his religious claims seemed meritorious to them, they would fellowship him. But to their dismay and confusion, he preached that they were wrong and he was right; that their worship was not acceptable to the God of heaven. He preached that the church to which he belonged was the only true church of the living God. Such a preacher! Don't you know he hurt their feelings? Evidently they were sincere. Surely he could have made nice talk and got away without causing any discord! Who was this preacher anyway? His name was Paul, and he preached this sermon in Athens. It did cause some stir. It did not please those leaders at all. They got up and left before he finished. But the sermon pleased God. You can read it in Acts chapter 17. THERE IS NO ROOM IN CHRIST'S CHURCH FOR A COMPROMISER!!!

How sad. Until "man's" view of God is enlarged (and God reveals Himself...His righteousness...His sovereignty to us in His word) "man" will continue, in his pride, to think he has the power to save people through gimmicks. Jesus said "no one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him...They will all be taught by God. Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from Him comes to Me." John 6:44,45. Certainly, man has a part in sharing the gospel and leading others to Christ, but as is usually the case, when we draw upon worldly wisdom (trying to impress or entertain people, offering them things that are "pleasing" to the eye, supplying every amenity possible to coerce participation) we will continue to distract people from what we say we are trying to draw them to...Christ. Instead their thinking will be dulled and the lie of Satan will permiate their minds...life is about "me." Until we come to a place where we understand life is about God and His puposes, not ours, we'll continue to use superficial, man made methods, that lead nowhere. May He have mercy on us all.

I think the amount of feedback this article has received is almost as hilarious as advertising the can-decor as an incentive to go to church. I was in a bathroom at a bordertown gas station a few days ago. It was nothing to brag about... maybe this church should try that route... have a restroom so horrible you'll hold it through the sermon and wait till you get home to play with your Nascar stickers.

I hope everyone who has something negative to say about: 1) People who attend a Christian congregation to be entertained. 2) People who attend a Christian congregation to entertain others. and 3) The manner in which people evangelize are doing more for Christ then writing their opinions. If this is all they're doing, at least those who are doing something are just sitting around and writing their opinions.

Ii really enjoyed reading all the feedback on this article, it is good to see all the passion- some of it misplaced- but passioned non-the-less. It seems to me that all error starts when we get away from the character of God and then make God in our image. God is Holy, God is Truth, God is Lord of all, and God is Just. Since Jesus's love IS obedience to the cross (Not my will, but Thy will be done) and our love is submission (If you love me you WILL keep my commands, then the greatest commands still hold true: God first, Servitude second, and be holy as I am holy- die to self. However we replaced them with the 11th and 12th commands of Becoming all things to all people and Do not judge. Indeed America is paying the price for our ignorance and social gospel of tolerance and personal satisfaction. We are become like Anna Nichole Smith, rotting from the inside out- rather than being salt and light and confronting the culture of SELF. jchristco@earthlink.net
