If there was any wonder why I have been calling the Emergent Church the new cult of liberal theology then this ought to extract your head from the foul fog of alleged “postmodernism.” The designation of a cult fits precisely because this Emergent rebellion against the Word of God has its own leaders, its own methodology in how it interprets the Bible, it rejects the historic orthodox Christian faith recovered in the Protestant Reformation, and it preaches an inclusive social gospel which deemphasizes the Holy Spirit–and for some EC leaders like “Living Spiritual Teacher” Richard Foster –even denies the need for regeneration.
This Emergent cult has also introduced heretical practices of so-called “Christian” mysticism under the benign moniker of contemplative spirituality (transcendental meditation for the Christian). Through the Emergent rebellion unregenerate reprobates like the following who would dare to defy their Creator Christ Jesus while calling themselves Christian have now been given a voice even within the non-discerning evangelical camp.
In researching issues involving Emergent “Evangelical” Prophet Tony Campolo, who also happens to be a good friend of Emergent Guru Brian McLaren, I have been led to the ECWR website. For those who don’t know and you may believe me I’m sorry you will even need to be made aware of this oxymoron; ECWR is the website for Evangelicals Concerned: Creating Safe Places for GBLT Christians, as in Gay, Bisexual, Lesbian, and Transgender “Christians.” [1] Ah, right. But this is the nonexistent “Christian” faith of the twilight zone which the Emergent Church is trying to bring slithering into mainstream evangelicalism.
The EmergentChurch Declares Unrepentant Sinners Christian
Emergent leader and “theologian” Tony Jones has already said in Relevant Magazine that Emergent has, among others, “lesbian mainline pastors in New England… We haven't yet found that there's anything that justifies us breaking fellowship with somebody else who loves and is trying to follow Jesus.” [2] Ingrid Schlueter and Rev. Wayne Sedlak point out in their article Campolo and Homosexuality (C&H), “Tony Campolo has tried to straddle the fence for years on the issue of homosexuality” [3]
For decades his wife Peggy has been an outspoken gay supporter and in C&H Schlueter and Sedlak inform us that Peggy Campolo has spoken:
of her conversion to supporting open homosexuality and describing the vacations she and her husband take each year to the resort community of Provincetown, Massachusetts, she talks about the “holy presence of acceptance” she felt in the town which is known for its homosexual “culture”. [4]
Tony Campolo is presently recognized as an associate pastor of the Mount Carmel Baptist Church (MCBC)in West Philadelphia. MCBC is affiliated with American Baptist Churches, USA and having been with the ABC myself in the early nineties I can tell you the Lord removed their lampstand long ago. Even back then this sad organization had already rejected the inerrancy and final authority of the Bible and was ordaining women to the office of pastor-teacher. Study it out for yourself and you will see that there is an absolute progression that happens to denominations that turn their back on God’s Word like this.
The inclusive social non-gospel comes to the forefront and the first doctrine to go is Hell. Next is the open acceptance of homosexual “Christians.” At this point I remind you again that Emergent Prophet Campolo is a very good friend of chief waffler Brian McLaren. The eminent confusion of these two Emergent dreamers over what they believe about Holy Scripture is undoubtedly a major factor why in the article Brian McLaren on the Homosexual Question: Finding a Pastoral Response for CT’s Leadership Blog McLaren whines:
Frankly, many of us don’t know what we should think about homosexuality. We’ve heard all sides but no position has yet won our confidence so that we can say “it seems good to the Holy Spirit and us.” That alienates us from both the liberals and conservatives who seem to know exactly what we should think. Even if we are convinced that all homosexual behavior is always sinful, we still want to treat gay and lesbian people with more dignity, gentleness, and respect than our colleagues do.
If we think that there may actually be a legitimate context for some homosexual relationships, we know that the biblical arguments are nuanced and multilayered, and the pastoral ramifications are staggeringly complex. We aren’t sure if or where lines are to be drawn, nor do we know how to enforce with fairness whatever lines are drawn. Perhaps we need a five-year moratorium on making pronouncements. [5]
No, Brian and Tony what you need to do is to either once and for all surrender your lives to Christ and be born again, or you need to grow a spiritual backbone and preach the actual Gospel of the One you claim sent both of you to be among His pastor-teachers. I cover this issue further in Brian McLaren: What’s So Hard About That but history shows that as soon as a minister, a church or a denomination caves in on the inerrancy of Holy Scripture God very quickly abandons them.
And in the end Peggy Campolo has rejected anything close to a proper Christian position of the issue of homosexuality. Brian McLaren himself is well on his way to embracing her heretical views because this is the direction the wind of popular opinion is blowing. Although Emergent Prophet Tony Campolo is publicly claiming (for now) that he “differs” from his wife on this issue of practicing homosexual “Christians” you may mark my words; when women run the church, and when women run the home, it is only a matter of time before Tony will publicly dance to Peggy’s sordid stance on so-called homosexual “Christians.” Emergent Evangelical Prophet Tony Campolo will also openly accept these practicing sinners as genuine believers just the same as Tony Jones has told us the EmergentChurch itself already has.

The writer is correct to connect the questioning of God's Word (ever since Satan told Eve "hath God said?") with all other sins. It's the camel's nose under the tent. Click here to reply to this post

I have for years been watching the uprising and heretical teaching of Tony Campolo. I have read his beliefs concerning the inerrancy of scripture and his views upon grace. As Ken has pointed out He is an ear tickling people pleasing gutless false prophet who is leading people into the pits of Hell. I do believe in reaching out to the homosexuals for they need Christ. I cannot in any way accept them as Christians and they continue to live in their abomiable lifestyles. God help us when we have to conform to the world instead of standing on the life changing Gospel of Jesus Christ. Click here to reply to this post

How can McLaren think that Biblical answers to homosexuality are "multilayered"?!?!? My 14 year old is studing the laws and it is VERY clear what God's position was and is on this matter!!!! I dont ever seem to remember when God was a bit unsure or "multilayered" on any of His decisions, laws, etc. He is an orderly, concise and perfect God. We are the ones that muddy the water with our unwillingness to conform to HIm. Click here to reply to this post

Aside from one particularly glaring point I agree with the article and with the feedback posted thus far. The "glaring point" is the comment at the beginning of the article which stated "the historic orthodox Christian faith recovered in the Protestant Reformation". The Protestant Reformation gave us "Catholic-lite" Lutheranism and the various denominations that split from there. If we truly want to speak of the "Orthodox" faith look at Jesus and the Disciples! They were all Jewish. Jesus did not come to form a new religion but to reform the faith that had existed in his day for thousands of years and still exists to day: the remnant of God-fearing, Bible believing, Commandment obeying people. This is the same remnant that existed in the time of Joseph (Gen 45:7), the time of Elijah (1 Kings 19:18), and the time of Paul (Rom 11:5). The current day remnant is of the same caliber and character. Click here to reply to this post

If I might humbly suggest it will serve you well to do some better research into Church history. Be careful not to get caught up in the Ray Vanderlaan (and his clone Rob Bell) with this Jesus as Rabbi messy-Jewishism. This is NOT too be confused with Messianic Judaism by the way. The Christian faith is the completion of the Jewish faith of Christ's time and His Church an extention rooted in Judaism but it grows into a personal relationship with God by the indwelling Spirit of God for all those called out to be in Christ. Christianity is NOT a religion, it is a relationship. Click here to reply to this post

May I as humbly suggest it might serve us all well to thoroughly read our Bibles more and listen to the "teachings of men" less. As a Messianic Jew I have had a wonderful relationship with God all throughout my life and with the acceptance of Yeshua (Jesus) as my Messiah I have only 1 thing that my brother Jews do not: a clear understanding of who Messiah is and the history of his first coming. Yes, there are some Jews who keep the commandments out of tradition and do not seek God. Others keep the commandments out of a sense of guilt but many Jews have a wonderful and intimate relationship with God without knowing Yeshua as Messiah (some rather notable examples: Moses, King David, King Solomon, Ezra, Nehemiah, etc). Their fulfillment and the fulfillment of all Jews as Jews will be even greater when Messiah returns and reveals himself to them (Rom 11:12). The story of Joseph is a wonderful foreshadowing of how Messiah is hidden from his brothers and how He will be revealed to his Jewish brothers in the end. God has blinded the eyes of the Jews to bring the Gentiles to salvation (Rom 11). The Bible speaks of a restored Temple during the reign of Messiah (Zech 6:12) and nations going up to Jerusalem to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles. Those who do not go up will receive no rain (Zech 14:16-17). The New Testament is a thoroughly Jewish document. Believe it. :) Click here to reply to this post

We are to love the sinner and hate the sin.
To accept homosexuals into the church, is OK. It's where it goes from there that, I think, the Lord is watching.
Do we segregate them into their own group or do we invite them to take part in whatever? To segregate them would be wrong, again, my opinion.
They should not be in any leadership position, until they repent and turn away from the life style they are leading.
To show the love of Jesus for them will do more than preaching at them. Let good fellowship, good bible study and the Word work on their heart.
If they want to repent, they will, and no one will be able to stop them once the Lord starts working on them and calling their heart to Him. If they're not ready, they won't repent and there is nothing we can do about it.
Blessings
Great article.

I agree with NC and VA - we cannot accept homosexuals into the church. Their very lifestyle is a slap in the face of God. He did not create us to be attracted to the same sex - that is what sin does. When we as a church do not address and confront sin within the church then we are in error and standing against God. The problem is not legalism but the fact that the "church" too often doesn't want to offend anyone therefore we put blinders on to their sin. What ever happened to old fashioned church discipline? My pastor is taking fire for confronting two people in an adulterous relationship. He is correct in what he did but yet there are several people in our church who think he should have just left them alone to figure it out for themselves. That is not so. The church is to be a haven for us to regenerate and encourage each other to go back out week after week into the world to live our lives as a testament to God and to share Christ with the lost around us. How can we be that and do that if we are allowing blatant sin and rebellion against God's Word to be in and flower within our midsts? Love the sinner and hate the sin. Be compassionate and loving when reaching out to those in homosexuality but do not embrace them and invite them into the church while they are still engaging in that lifestyle. Be bold and be courageous. Stand up and make the church what God intended it to be - not what is publically and politically acceptable! Click here to reply to this post

Incredulous! Where in the Bible does it say it is ok to allow homosexuals into the church? Where!? Where does it say to allow unrepentent sinners into the church fellowship? Where does the Bible say we are to invite the world into the church? Have we so little discernment? Have we elevated the traditions of men above the Word of God? Does anyone know what the local church body is for anymore? Contrary to popular belief it is NOT a place to bring sinners into so that they can be put under the preaching of the "hired gun" so that he can save them! It is NOT a social club! It is there for the building up of the saints (born again believers) so that they can boldly "go" into the world and witness the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Witness to a world dead in trespass and sin! When you are (or were) saved then you recieve(d) this commission from the Holy Spirit to preach the Gospel to every creature. Wolves, grevious wolves are going to come in dressed as sheep anyway, why! WHY! WHY!! invite sin into the camp! Does anyone not read 2 John anymore?? 2 John 10-11, "If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds." You invite the homosexual into your midst and have fellowship with them you are partaking of their sin! You invite an adulterer into your midst and have fellowship with them you are partaking of their sin! But once one of these are converted (who repents and forsakes their sin) then we are brothers and sisters to them, not before! Thus saith the LORD, "Be ye holy for I am holy!" The greatest Love we can show a sinner is their sins! Show them why their sin is so grevious to a HOLY GOD, and why a just, righteous, holy GOD cannot allow sin in His presence! Show them the consequence of their sin! and then show them the greatest Love ever known, that Jesus Christ came and took their place on the cross and gave Himself to die in their place, and pay the penalty for their sin! O WHAT LOVE! Pilgrim, that ain't just the preacher's job, it's the job of every born-again Christian! Go tell the world the Gospel! Click here to reply to this post

Well, I was wondering when someone else was going to respond to this article in the
Spirit of Truth? I can only wonder why so few have replied. Is it the state of the church? Are we already so afraid that we will found out and be persecuted for speaking the truth about the sin of homosexuality that we are afraid to blog about it here. This is one of the greatest threats to the Church at the moment and no one else has anything to say about it? Heaven help us! Click here to reply to this post

I suspect that there has been little response to such an article because if biblical standards were upheld churches would colapse from the exodus of people and their $$$.
Can't you just hear them on the way out the door, "Legalism! Legalism! I won't won't stand for such herisy as Legalism! I will not attend such a legalist church, where there is no love and no tolerance." "Why, can't we all just get along?" Click here to reply to this post

Accepting a practicing homosexual into the church is wrong. It is no different than accepting a person into the church who is not married but who is living with their mate. It is the same as accepting a person into the church who is in adultry. The only time it would be acceptable would be "IF, If, If" that person is repentant and willing to and taking steps to change. Then they should be allowed to stay and seek diliverance. But if they are unteachable, not ready, can't agree, can't see it, any of these, they should not be allowed to stay. Read Corinthians. (As a matter of fact if they do not want to change, they should not even "want to stay" because of the WORD being preached that so convicts them that they want to leave) Paul rebuked and corrected the church for thinking they were walking in love by allowing a biblically wrong sexual relationship to continue within the body of believers. He told the church to tell them to leave until and if they would repent, turn from their sin. We must do the same! A little leaven leavens the whole lump! PS A "mega lump" or mega church might have a hard time with this. How will they even know what is going on in the lives of so many? Click here to reply to this post

First I would suggest that we drop the pre-title, gay christian, lesbian christian etc. To be a Christian is to be a regenerated sinner, therefore solely a christian. Hanging on to the other portion seems to me a validation to sin, and has no place there, we are to put off the old lifestyle. As a single man, I struggle with the flesh, but the bottom line, heterosexual, homosexual or whatever, outside the boundries of marriage it is a sin to have sex PERIOD. If you have proclivities toward someone of the same sex, I believe you can be saved, however,I cannot believe you would be in any kind of "relationship",fulfilling the desires of your flesh, and truly be regenerate. It is still an abomination before the Lord, and we are to bring every thought captive towards him, and I believe that if look at a Woman or Man with lust in your eye, you have committed adultery already. Pray for those struggling with this powerful tool of the adversary. Click here to reply to this post

right on. I get tired of hearing only about gays in sexual sin. A gay man struggling with his feelings and asking the Lord for strenght and forgivness will be forgiven just as the straight man or woman who fights lustful feelings and has to ask the Lord for strenght and the same forgivness. HOWEVER, to the gays or straight people who dare to say God made me this way and I am not doing anything wrong by this action, woe to them I fear. Click here to reply to this post

The way I understand the term there is no such thing as a 'gay' man who does not act-out his sin. That is, the term defines the action. With that said I hope I understood you to mean that the 'gay' man you referred to is someone who understands he has this particular bent to sinning and is not fulfilling his particular lust of the flesh. Since we need to be careful to differentiate, I agree with the 46 year old from Alaska...let's drop the pre-titles, especially the term 'gay' and all its politically-correct overtones. If someone is struggling with this sin let's say that he is. If this person is a believer practicing and justifying his sin we need to charitably confront them, or, if an unbeliever charitably call the sin the sin that it is - Sodomy!
