If HarvardUniversity doesn’t hate the U.S. at least one of its off spring surely does.Chris Hedges, a graduate of the HarvardDivinitySchool, is in the process of writing a new book entitled American Fascists:The Christian Right and the War on America. He has also written a highly inflammatory article entitled “Letter From Canada:The New Christian Right.”
Hedges is concerned that Canada’s new conservative prime minister, Stephen Harper, is a member of a conservative church (East Gate Alliance Church), which “believes in the literal word of the Bible, faith healing and the imminent return of Jesus Christ.”Worse yet, the church believes that homosexuality is a sin and abortion is murder!
If that isn’t enough, Hedges believes that Harper is “slowly mobilizing Canada’s 3.5 million evangelicals—along with the 44 percent of Canadians who say they have committed themselves to Christ—as a [political] power base.”
To prove that Canada is moving toward the abyss Hedges also notes,“James Dobson has set up a Canadian branch of his Focus on the Family three blocks from the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa.”
Hedges argument is that Canada is paradisecompared to the United States because Canada has a high standard of living, a small military, a national healthcare plan, and is mentally saner!
Could it be that Canada can afford “a small military” because its southern neighbor has “a large military” to protect it!A number of years ago I sat next to a member of Canada’s defense department who told me “your country has nothing to fear from the north, neither of our two helicopters right now are flying.”He also told me if there were a boating accident in the Vancouver harbor Canada would have call its southern neighbor for help to rescue the victims.
Hedges, along with Canada’s media, are seeking to turn the youthagainst the United States.According to a 2004 poll 40 percent of Canadian teens think American is an evil country and among French-Canadian teens, the numbers jump to 64 percent.According to Bill O’Reilly, these Canadian teenagers haven’t been completely educated and hence wants these students to add to their knowledge to wit: “The foreign and defense policies of Ronald Reagan resulted in the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the freeing of approximately 122 million people in Eastern Europe. The state of Israel would cease to exist if not for American protection, and about 5.5 million Jews would be in grave danger.Nearly 23 million Taiwanese would be denied freedom if not for American protection.More than 48 million South Koreans would be living under a dictatorship if not for American protection.”And that’s just a few items that O’Reilly mentions to prove that America isn’t the bully that Canada’s leftist seek to paint her.And besides, “thousands of American service people have lost their lives protecting people overseas. The truth is that the U.S.A. has freed more human beings in 230 years than the rest of the world combined.”
The anti-American mentality of the intellectual elite also concerns the British historian, Paul Johnson. He can’t understand why these elite hates the U.S. especially since they are continually harping about diversity, tolerance, sexism, multiracial, etc.Says Johnson, the United States is “the world’s only unqualified success in building on the largest possible scale a multiracial society.Every culture in the world is represented in the U.S. usually in considerable numbers… Some of the most successful U.S. communities—the Koreans, the Lebanese, the Vietnamese and the Cubans—are quite recent creations…America comes much closer to the realization of world brotherhood and sisterhood than that corrupt and soulless abstraction, the United Nations…To hate America is thus not to hate a particular nation as such, but to hate humanity. And, of course, it is a melancholy fact that many intellectuals do hate the human race.”
Yet the world’s secular humanists, secular progressives, secular theocrats (those seeking to establish heaven on earth), including Harvard’s Hedges, love the U.N. and can’t find enough words in the thesaurus to denigrate the U.S.Go figure!
But to give Chris an Excedrin headache he needs to know that James Dobson’s Focus on the Family isn’t the only Christian conservative organization helping Canada’s Christians understand the times in which both countries live.Summit Ministries is not only conducting seminars in Canada, but Summit’s worldview-based curriculum is also making its way through Canada’s Christian schools and home schools. To make the headache even worse, Canadian young people journey down to Colorado to attend one of Summit’s two-week worldview courses throughout the summer months.
And finally, to make the headache a real bummer the founders of Harvard (1636) would agree with just about everything we teach at Summit Ministries viz., a Biblical Christian Worldview, and an expose of the five major worldviews seeking to undermine Christianity and its eternal truths (God, Creation, Fall, Redemption, Restoration for starters).
Summit Ministries brochures for the 2007 two-week programs for teens are now ready for distribution along with its one-week Adult-Educators Conference held at the Navigator’s Glen Eyrie Conference Center in early April. In fact, Summit will also be conducting an Adult-Educators Conference during the summer of 2007 at BryanCollege in Dayton, TN.
Those readers looking for an ideal Christmas present for someone who reads can not go wrong with David Noebel’s new and revised Understanding The Times: The Collision of Today’s CompetingWorldviews. This work describes the six most important worldviews vying for the hearts and minds of the whole world—Christianity, Islam, Secular Humanism, Marxist Humanism, Cosmic Humanism (New Age), and Postmodernism. Also, check out the Summit’s webstore for materials on worldview curriculum starting at 1st grade through high school—formatted forChristian schools and home schools.

Let's see - one student at Harvard writes some complaints about current US policy...and this constitutes "Harvard hating the US"??? Is this meant to be a big joke? Why don't we write an article entitled "The Evangelical Christian Community approves of having meth-fueled homosexual trysts with gay prostitutes"? But seriously, I hope it is obvious to people that one can vigorously disagree with - even hate - much of what our current leadership is doing without "hating America." If not, then everyone who complained about Clinton's behavior during his White House tenure were "America-haters." But surely that's just silly. It is perfectly consistent to acknowledge the wonderful things the US has done throughout their history; to love the country; and yet to acknowledge its failures, to point out where it has gone - and is going - wrong, to militate against policies and politicians who would take the US further down an evil path. In fact, it is not only consistent - I would say that if one loves the US, one is OBLIGED to hate when our leadership starts to take our country in the wrong direction. So what does it say about a person when they conclude "X hates America" from the fact that X says something negative about what American leaders are doing? (I'm glad to hear that 30 IL is helping students become better equipped to avoid this kind of sloppy and dangerous thinking). Click here to reply to this post

And I thought all my fellow Canadians love and revere the USA. Your article hits to the beef of the issue. Most of what we see on our news and in the papers are anti-American rants, one-sided stories. We are told (more or less) the USA is being led by the Christian Right, whose sole purpose is to solidify her interests in world domination for oil, power, and greed. Not peace. Not democracy. Not freedom to do or say as "we" have it in the western world. I am proud of Prime Minister Harper for sticking to his laurels and God given rights. As an evangelical, I did not need anybody to polarize me. I know right from wrong, and I know the Truth. The one that sets you free, my Word, my Jesus. Please let the citizens of the USA know there are many Canadians who understand and agree with them. I am proud of our military, fighting in Afghanistan. We owe a lot to the USA, as you have said in your article. But, we also disagree with some actions and decisions, as you also do. As for the youth of Canada, and the USA, we, as their real teachers, must let them know what is really happening in the world, a non-political fight. A fight between two worldviews -- world domination by Islam, and the Supreme Dominion of Our Triune God. Click here to reply to this post

You have made some very valid comments. I
would like to ask you a question about the
"Triune God". Can you show me one place in
scripture where God is refered to as "triune". Or can you tell me one place in
scripture where God is called three persons.
The scriptures refer to the Father,Son,and
Holy Spirit but I can not find anywhere in
scripture where they are called more than
one person. In fact when the teacher of the
law asked Jesus the most important commandment Jesus said "Hear O Israel the Lord your God, the Lord is One". Couldn't
Jesus have created the word triune or trinity being the creater. If the father is
not the same person as Jesus why does it
call Jesus The father in Isaiah. Isaiah 9:6
" For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the Government will be on his
shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful,
Counselor, Mighty God, EVERLASTING FATHER,
Prince of Peace. It seems to me that the
scriptures clearly state that Mary's son
or the human body of Jesus was the son of
God. But the spirit of Jesus was God.
Otherwise Mary would be the mother of God.
But Mary was not the mother of God but only
the mother of his human body. God is
omnipresent he was on the throne in heaven
and on earth in the body of Jesus at the
same time. Not only that but he was everywhere in the universe at that same time. In the old testament does not Jehova
say "You will have no other savior except Me". I am not trying to be argumentive on
this point but would really like to hear
your comments. Click here to reply to this post

I think the writer, without realizing it, has made the progressives argument for them.
He cites Mr. Johnson's statement about how the U.S. is a multi-cultural melting pot of Lebanese, Koreans, etc. Most of our newest immigrants (other than those south of the border) are not Christians.
I don't think anyone hates the U.S. but do hate many of its policies. By the way, had there not been a Gorbechev there would still be a Soviet Union and a wall dividing Germany. It's wonderful that he and President Regan were on the same page. It shows what true cooperation between different ideals can accomplish.
As Christians, I feel that we need to show the world our love, tolerance and willingness to forgive instead of giving them a "my way or the highway" view of our faith. While I am conservative in many ways I can understand where some of todays conservative thought appear to be a bit overbearing. Thats where the Harvard grad is coming from, I think. Prophecy is surely being fulfilled. The author critisizes the Episcopalian Bishop for her stand on homosexuality (truly an abomination to God) but then quotes from a perveted translation (NIV) that had a lesbian on the translation committee.
God help us in these last days.

This article uses a manipulative tactic often found in general media coverage of controversial issues: a controversial headline or introduction that is meant to attract readers but has very little connection to the actual content of the article. This article is not actually about Harvard and its main support for its claim about Harvard is the dubious evidence of offering one example of a Harvard student. I teach a college course in which I encourage students to think critically about arguments, and to note such rhetorical manipulations -- often they find them in secular arguments about abortion, stem cell research, etc, but I'm disappointed to say that they can also find them in articles like this one, by authors and websites labeled "Christian." Such articles are hardly a good witness; online articles potentially reach a diverse audience, and websites labeling themselves as Christian ought to have the highest standards for accuracy and truthfulness so that these Christlike qualities are evident to readers. It is this kind of article that drives me crazy and creates fear in the hearts of those who are working so hard to build relationships with and eventually lead those among the "intellectual elite" to the Lord.
To say that Harvard hates God is ludicrous. Harvard doesn't hate anyone or anything. It is an institution - institutions cannot hate. People there may hate God. This is not big news. From the beginning of time there have been God-haters. We live in a fallen world and therefore we ought to be ministering to those who need Christ's love and grace. Harvard is a place where intellectuals gather to debate the merits of thoughts, ideas, beliefs, faith, and time-held traditions. Isn't it time that we as Christians re-engage in this dialogue for the benefit of the Kingdom of God?
Why are we afraid to engage in the intellectual world? Why don't we have the world's leading thinkers standing on the front lines convincing others of the merits of Christianity? We will not do so by bashing others. This is just a turn-off to the rest of the world. We will do so by listening and then engaging them in well-thought, well-conceived conversation.
I sat at the Harvard Divinity School two weeks ago for their Theological Education Day and was struck by one fantastic statistic: Evangelical Christians now represent the largest segment of divinity students at HDS; and their numbers keep growing. Wow! Let us not destroy this inroad. Rather, let us build upon it so we can allow the Holy Spirit to do His work. After all, is it not through Him and by Him and Because of Him (and not us) that lives are changed and people come to know Christ?
I cannot imagine that Jesus would have shunned those at Harvard because one person (or even many people) made disparaging comments about Christians. As a matter of fact, virtually everyone during the time of Christ and the subsequent era in which his followers built the church sought to do everything they could to tear down the work begun through Christ. Not only did they not bunker down, they worked harder to spread the love of Jesus and the Good News to those who actively sought to destroy the church and kill them.
Should we not also be salt and light in a world that so desperately needs Jesus? I truly believe it is time for you and me to be more involved at Harvard, at Princeton, and at any other elite institutions and continue to build the Kingdom of God by impacting those at such places.
Please, I am begging you and all of those who agree with your article to stop using the political tactics you attempt to use for the sake of God's glory. Rather, try the time-honored and true tactics of Christ Himself who came to teach, to serve, to talk, to love, to heal, and to save. From what I can tell, the ones you despise so much - the "liberal left" - are not turning to Christ because of your wrath. From my experience living in Boston, the least Christian city in the U.S.A. (according to Barna statistics), you are not winning the lost by writing that "Harvard Hates God." I believe you are doing just the opposite, which is a shame. Click here to reply to this post
