The Bullpen is Empty

The Bullpen is Empty

We are so shortsighted in America.  Most of us are so burdened down with earning a living that it is hard for us to focus our attention too far down the road.  Get up, go to work, attend our kids’ ball game, and go to bed.  Do it again tomorrow.  Before you know it another month has passed, and soon a year.  Life just seems to happen.  We become victims of our own busyness.

It is especially true in the political realm.  Most Americans wake-up a month prior to an election, are bombarded by political commercials, cast a vote on Election Day oblivious to the candidate’s true positions, and quietly return to their daily routine.  So much of what happens in America seems to be out of our control.

A successful business man once told me that “failure to plan is planning to fail.”  The man with a plan always has a leg up on the man who has no plan.

Most of us are sick with politics and politicians.  The lack of enthusiasm for the Republicans among evangelicals has nothing to do with Mark Foley, or the war, or the cost of gasoline.  The truth is most are feeling disappointed that their hopes, so high in 2000 and 2004 for a return to mom and pop values, have so clearly been dashed.  The old adage “fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me” seems so appropriate.  If the pollsters and pundits were to ask me I would explain it this way.  It is like a lot of marriages.  We are faithful to the one to whom we pledged our fidelity, but the passion has long ago left the relationship.  We view the bride we took years ago, and recall the passion that we once felt towards her.  Now, we found ourselves locked into a marriage of mutual convenience.  Void of enthusiasm, but nowhere else to go, we try to convince ourselves how great things are.

In 2000, after eight years of “marriage” to the Clinton administration, evangelicals were ecstatic to forge a new relationship.  Tired of the values emanating from the Clinton White House, like a divorced woman on the rebound, Christians flipped head over heels for President Bush and his Christian values.  So intent on getting it right in this new marriage, we jumped headlong into the new Republican bed.  This relationship would once and for all clean up the mess in America.  The value voters had arrived and a Christian was in the White House!

Six years into the marriage, although we are reluctant to admit it, the relationship between the church and the Republicans is more of a domestic partnership than it is a marriage.  As we roll over in the morning and look at the bride we so enthusiastically embraced a short time ago, we come to the realization that this relationship too was not what we thought it would be.  We voted our values, but realize now that many of our leaders trampled on them.

In many ways, George W. Bush is the worst thing to happen to the Republican Party.  I am not writing to debate his faith, his commitment to the values we share, or his job as president.  As we head to the mid-term elections it has become painfully obvious that George W. Bush IS the Republican Party, so ordained by the evangelical cheerleaders.

I keep hearing from the experts that there are a lot of “good conservatives” in Congress, men and women of principle who are willing to stand up for what is righteous. Unfortunately, as most are beginning to figure out, their blind support of President Bush and his policies does not do much to help their conservative image.  It's actually becoming embarrassing.

George W. Bush is not, and never has been a conservative.

Rick Santorum is a conservative.  But in the interest of party unity, he campaigned for Arlen Specter.  Specter won and now Santorum is fighting for his political life.  He sold his principles for party unity.  He banked on Bush and it drained his account.  It is sad to see a true champion of Christian values lying against the ropes.

In my letter to Dr Dobson from a couple of weeks ago, I posited that now was the time to divorce ourselves from this doomed partnership.  Readers criticized me and bombarded me with the old line “we can’t let the liberals get in power.”  They are too blind to see that the liberals are in power, but they are in the Republican Party!  As the election draws near, every incumbent Republican is now paddling full-bore to the right, hoping that the fidelity of Christians will save them from the cliff that compassionate conservativism is hurling them towards.  They are ALL pro-life, ALL for traditional marriage, ALL for lower taxes, ALL for less government. The Democrats run as RINO’s and the RINO’s run as conservatives. Fool me once…..

So maybe this question will get you to face the truth about the Grand Old Party. Who is in the bullpen?

As we lift our heads up and look down the road at 2008, who will be the Republican candidate for president?  Who will claim to be the “true conservative” that the evangelical base must rally behind?  Who will be the “conservative” standard-bearer to save us from Hillary?

  • Pro-abortion, pro-gay Rudy Giuliani?
  • “Maverick” Republicrat John McCain?
  • Anti-family values Arnold Schwarzenegger?
  • Governor Mitt Romney? (Sorry, Mormons are not Christians.)
  • Thrice married former Speaker Newt Gingrich?
  • Condi Rice?

I can’t wait to see how our evangelical leadership tries to sell us on this one.

I once had a girlfriend that would do anything for me.  She adored the ground that I walked on.  Because I knew her loyalty to me was unwavering, I took advantage of her.  Although I called her my girlfriend, in all honesty she loved me a lot more than I loved her.  No matter how much I disrespected her, no matter how much I took advantage of her, no matter how often I pushed her aside, I always knew that she would be there, like an old dog, waiting for me.

The relationship didn’t last long.  Our mutual lack of respect for her took its toll.  She wanted to be my girlfriend; I wanted her to be my servant.

Evangelicals give millions of their "tithe" dollars to Republicans.  They are the “base” of the party.  They man phone banks, work the neighborhoods, pass petitions, and sweat blood and tears for the Party.  They think they are the Republicans’ girlfriend.  The Republicans see us as their maids.

Stop a minute.   Those of you who are mad right now.  Why?  Why are you mad at me?  Galatians 4:6 Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?

Conservatism is not Christianity and Christianity is so much more than conservativism.

I pray that Dobson and company are beginning to “get it”.

I love the Ohio State Buckeyes and the great program Jim Tressel has built.  Last year they lost nine starters from their great defense.  This year they are better.  Why?  Because Coach Tressel understands what Christian Republicans do not.  A successful team has to have a common vision and a common goal.  Once that is in place, the faces may change but the results will not.  A good program is always grooming the bench to carry on the tradition.  The strength of the team is its unity, not its diversity.

Look at the Republican bench.  It is full of empty suits who mouth our values but don’t believe in them.  Let us never forget--although some Christians are Republican, not all Republicans are Christians.

Despite what they try to convince us, America’s future hangs in the balance.  Not over sex scandals, or gas prices, or Social Security.  America is being destroyed by her values.

I’m sorry to be redundant.  No matter who wins in November it is time for a divorce.

The bullpen is empty.  The cupboard is bare.  The bench is thin.  It is time to start our own team and draft our own players.

Are you a Christian who votes Republican, or are you a Republican who also happens to be a Christian?

What is that old country music song?  “You’ve got to stand for

something or you’ll fall for anything.  You’ve got to be your own

man, not a puppet on a string.  Never compromise what's right

and uphold your family name
You've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything
.”

And can anyone truly imagine Jesus voting for the lesser of two evils?

it may be time for some short term pain

I find much to agree with in this article. I began to realize this in the last election, when I decided to vote for Peroutka(in south Madison Co, MS, I may be the only one). I do get the feeling that the GOP has used and abused Christians over the past several decades. I remember the Reagan Revolution and the hope that I and others felt that this country was finally going to turn around. And the Contract with America. And on and on. For most of my life of which I have any memory, Repubs have controlled the White house. They nominated most of the current justices. What have we received in return? They never intend to overturn Roe (just to keep talking about it). The only positive aspect is a tax cut (but even Kennedy did that). Ever since they have controlled the Congress, their conservative "values" have gone out the window. They just don't function well as the majority party (complaining is easier than actually doing something about the problems). Can anyone honestly say that we are better off now than we were in 1972? Has real income increased or has the culture reflected our values more? Has our money been managed biblically...how about our sovereignty? I could go on and on but I know space is limited. Christians just need to take an honest look at things through the lens of a Biblical worldview. Politics and the GOP cannot be our idols. A divorce from the GOP would be no more unscriptural than one from an unfaithful spouse. If all of their "base" went to a third party (and if some conservative Democrats{there are some} then they would take some notice, huh? Yes, there probably will be some, maybe a lot of pain if the secularist Democrats regain control, but then again, the Church has never thrived when it and the world were comfy with one another, has it? Time to stop looking to the GOP for our salvation.

Right on!!! We shoul not put our faith in men but in God! Even if the (more extreme) liberals win in November, this might be good as it will force us back to trusting in God. By and large, the Republicans blew it!

Hey Coach!! Our family is in TOTAL agreement with you. How do we get the ball rolling for this to happen in 2008? For Dr. Dobson to help get Judge Moore on the ballet? What can we do? We have already emailed Dr. Dobson to let him know we will support and do whatever we can to help. What should we be doing right now? Please let us know. We are finished voting for "the lesser of two evils"!!

Coach Dave, I think that you are exaggerating about the efforts of Christians in politics (I think you are making an honest mistake, NOT telling a lie). While I some Christians are actively involved, far too many more are devotees of Rapture speculators such as Hal Lindsey, Jack Van Impe, Mary Stewart Relfe, Dave Hunt, Texe Marrs, and Tim LaHaye. They just sit on their "left behinds" on most election days. (When Rapture speculators are taken to task for engaging is such worthless activity, they often fall back on "seeker sensitive" and "emergent church" rationale, making the bogus claim that Rapture speculating is the best way to win people to Christ). I say to all my fellow Christians who have been misled by the Rapture speculators, GET OFF YOUR "LEFT BEHINDS" AND START VOTING!!!!

In MN there is a write in spot for all races. Remember these six words, "None of the above is acceptable." I am planning on writing to the Republican party and telling them I am doing that and why.

I tend to see this article advising Christians to stay away from politics and voting. I don't disagree that many Republicans and some conservatives are not standing on some Christian principles but I would like to hear some solutions and valid candidates who will. I don't believe a majority will ever elect or vote for a bold believer in Christ---vote for a person who is not ashamed to preach the message of the cross, sin, righteousness and judgement during their campaign, because thats truly what this country and world needs. The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing... I would vote for Todd Friel or Ray Comfort for sure... Tim www.areyougood.us

God hates divorice!!! Fix the GOP, don't abandon it!! If the Christian Right does not turn out we will get Hillary. Think of the choice-Hillary or Guiliani, or Kerry or McCain. Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House!!? Ted Kennedy as Secretary of Education??!! Howard Dean as Secretary of State?! Couldn't you see First Man Bill Clinton fighting for Christian Values?? Do you think Barney Frank will be advocating traditional marriage? What could environmentalists do with the current Eminent Domain situation? I wonder how much St Patrick's Cathedral in NY would be worth to a developer or Saddleback Church in CA?Lets give the country a real choice, a true conservative and then fight for what you believe in!! There are a lot of true conservatives IN congress-support them!! The time to act is before the primaries-nominate and support true conservatives. We have time before the 2008 election to act, but in the mean time, DON'T just hand congress back to the liberals!! Pick out a true Christian conservative NOW and work to put him/her in office in 2008. Instead of whining about what we have, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!! Giving congress to the liberals is not the answer!! Look at the success of the Defense of Marriage Laws passed in numerous states in 2004(100% success)-we can do it, if we are willing to do what it takes. Put the GOP on notice for 2008-they've got 2 years to get it right!! OR ELSE!!

Dear Coach, I am Christian, and an active elected official of my local Republican party. Like you, I am frustrated with RINOs in the party. From my little corner of the political world I see the following things: *Almost anyone can come into this primary, saying they are a conservative, and run as a Republican. We only assume that they support the local party platform, which itself is very conservative. We see a mixed bag between people who actually hold to the platform in word and deed, and those who only give it lip service. *I also see volunteers in the party who are there because they are conservative about $$$, and not nuch else. *I have made these concerns known to several other party members. What the party needs is some sort of interview/weeding out/grooming process for candidates that are worth spending our resources on. It doesn't mean others couldn't run, but they should not expect support from people like myself who do a lion's share of the work in the party. This needs to start at the local, grass roots level. *There are Republican candidates who are worth supporting. I have several in my own state whom I actively support. I can still pick and choose whom I give my resources to. The whole party isn't corrupt, and not every thing that has been done in the last eight years has been bad. *I believe in the Scripture that tells us to "come out" from a group of people that would corrupt us spiritually, and I have personally done this. However, we are not talking about the church, but a political party. In my opinion, the consequence of leaving the Republican party would be to give the left absolute free reign to do as they wished in governing. Right now, there is a 50/50 split of the electorate, as has been seen in the last two national elections. Or, to put it another way, 50 percent of the people in the country, if voting results are a barometer, cannott distinguish right from wrong. I know that our entire 50 percent is not lilly white, but breaking off on our own would give the blue politicians an instant majority. We can't have that. *I think that having a political party that does not support the conservative platform by 100%, stinks. However, the alternative of handing control of the government over to people who believe 180 degrees opposite of you and I do, stinks even worse. We are faced with two choices: bad and worse. I say that for now we choose bad, and figure out what we must do to make it better, from the ground up. I would appreciate a response to this from you. This is the preemminent issue in the Republican party, and it needs to be hashed out. Thanks. Rick
